Washington Warriors? I personally like Washington Warthogs, but understand if people object to having "wart" in the team-name. As long as we avoid something stupid like Wizards, I'm happy.

I remember at least 2 instances of guys just blowing through the line (one of which occurred on an extra point attempt). I'd have to go back and check, but I remember that I felt the vast majority of the blocks were on the line not picking someone up or just getting bowled over, which I ultimately blame on poor coaching.

Well, a major issue was the # of blocked kicks. The Redskins that year allowed something like a rediculous 3 or 4 blocked kicks over the course of the year. When you took those out, his numbers weren't all that bad, especially considering he was attempting (and sometimes even making) 50+ yard attempts. I think it was the San Fransisco game where he made something rediculous (like almost a 60-yarder).
Kobra Kai's good, but he doesn't quite have the distance that Gano does, which hurts him on kickoffs. I think that, more than anything, is why they drafted another kicker.

EDIT: 5 BLOCKED KICKS! 5 of Gano's 10 misses were blocked. To me, that says the problem is likely rooted someplace else...

Kickers, even really good good ones, rarely become draft picks, and those that do rarely make the team. There's so little turnover on NFL rosters for that spot, and each team really only needs 1. If that guy gets hurt, they just sign another off the street (sorta like how people do it in fantasy leagues).

I never thought he was the bad in DC - just needed some more work. The guy was young, had great range, and saved you a roster spot because he could handle kickoff duties too. I think the fact that it was easy to turn his name into "Ga-no good" was ultimately why he lost fan support, honestly.

Something I really thought was interesting was the comments of the Bears GM after the draft:

He was playing Georgia Tech, and they lined him up at inverted safety and ran him through the A gap against an option team to crash the mesh point between the quarterback and the fullback, Emery said in plain English. And he repetitively did that. This is one tough football player.

A big takeaway for me here is this - Bud will design a way to showcase your talent and highlight your best attributes. He will do it against our best opponents on national television. NFL coaches will be watching. If you are a talented defensive player, Bud will find a show to show that talent off on the biggest stages.

wow, that's rather paranoid. I think the selection committee will probably be more honest than any other polls, which will help us way more than the BCS ever did (remember, 2/3s of that formula were human components, and the other 1/3 was a bunch of black-box computer programs). At least this one they will be answering questions every week and explaining themselves. That'll give us some accountability. Lets wait and see before panicking.

I think we are probably going to surprise a lot of people. I can't see us coming in ranked, and anOSU will probably at least be a top-15 team. If the qb position comes together, we could be sneaky good next year, especially early in the season when a lack of depth in a couple of places isn't such a huge issue.

Vivid Seats was the cheapest I could find (although with the $40 service fee, it ended up being about the same). Ebay might not be a bad place to check too

Some predictive stats prior to the game so we could evaluate the QB (whoever it is) and passing game would be interesting. For instance:

  • Average Completion % Against Opposing D
  • Average Yards per Attempt Opposing D
  • Average Interception Rate Against Opposing D

Also, some other similar metrics to evaluate the offense as a whole might be useful:

  • Average Yards per Play Against Opposing D
  • Average Yards per Carry Against Opposing D
  • Average Points per Game Against Opposing D

These metrics compared to our final performance in the game would give us a pretty good idea about where we actually stand offensively, and where the weaknesses are. You could also go one step further, and by adjusting for our metrics, provide our expected stats. Then, if we're exceeding those, we'll know if we're improving/having a good day.

A final thing that you could do, would be to compare our offense last year to this year using the predicted stats. IE - our offense this year was in the Xth quartile for completion percentage. This D gives up on average a 52% completion rate. Our last year's offense would probably output X. This year's offense output Y. Hopefully Y>X, although maybe not in every area. I think it might make for an interesting comparison. A similar study for our D would be interesting as well.

EDIT - I think these should be adjusted for opponents as well. Not sure I made that clear, and I'm not sure how, exactly. Maybe some sort of iterative ranking system?

Listen, and understand. That AD is out there. He can't be bargained with. He can't be reasoned with. He doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And he absolutely will not stop, ever, until the Hokies are national champions.
