All football statisticians include defensive scores in the scoring offense stat. It's actually one of the reasons I don't like scoring offense as a stat. However, as long as it's uniformly applied, the only time accuracy is an issue is if there are significantly more or less defensive scores this season than last. If that happens, I'll revisit the idea of factoring out defensive and special teams scores. But that would require a lot more work, and I'm lazy, so for now I'll let it ride.
Also, not sure if you missed it, but I am including 3rd down conversion percentage, red zone TD% and red zone scoring%.
YPA is one that's so obvious I'm smacking myself. It will be included going forward.
I'm worried sacks allowed might draw false parallels since Motley has better escape ability than Brewer, but I'll ponder that further.
Turnovers are more a function of an individual player than the scheme, IMO.
We'll run more with Motley than Brewer, so run:pass ratio might draw some misleading comparisons.
The one you suggested that threw me is plays per game. I think that at 3rd down conversion would be a little redundant. I'll think more about that though.
People like that have way more going wrong in their lives than just the struggles of their team on the field. Some people are just pervasively miserable.
As an independent, ND must treat every game like a conference game. There's no conference championship path to the NY6 bowls. They don't have the luxury of saying, eh, this game doesn't really matter, let's just get out of here in one piece.
Like someone in the live game thread said, hitting a receiver in stride is hitting a receiver in stride. Regardless of the level of the opponent, Motley's balls were exactly where they needed to be. That proves that Motley can be a passing QB. Will it be more difficult to make reads against a better defense? Absolutely. But his performance against Furman proved that Motley does indeed have the skill set to be a QB in Lefty's scheme and not just a wildcat QB.
I believe I saw only 1 false start by our guys.
1 false start, 1 holding penalty. A second holding penalty was called on Malleck during a punt attempt but that isn't on the OL.
Procedurally, the line is light-years ahead of where they were last year. I know nnot everyone is sold on Searels', but in the early going, he's proved himself one hell of a coach. Even if he likes to give the writing staff here aneurisms by the way he reps his players in practice.
I honestly think on a lot of those fouls, the coaches will review the film and then tell the guilty player they don't want him to alter how he would play the exact same situation at all. There were some real ticky-tack calls by whoever the ACC picked up off the street to officiate this game.
If Motley looks anything like what he looked like in the third quarter today, he'll be well nigh impossible to steal the starting spot from. He looked thoroughly comfortable with eventing Loeffler wanted him to do.
With Josh Jackson inbound, who bears some similarity to Lawson's game.
Well, McMillian had 98 yards. Pretty close.
Beat me to it.
This is what I'm saying.
Suck it, Hoos.
They are surprisingly similar players. I'd be happy with either, but the extra time in Lefty's system would be a big asset to Motley.
Imagine if we had come out firing on all cylinders in the first half.
If Motley sustains this level of play I'd look for him to start next year.
He's the clear number two. Will see lots of playing time this year. But if Motley repeats this performance he's the clear starter.
Final stats on Motley:
16 of 24, 233 yards, 9.7 YPA, 2 TD, 0 INT
4 rushes, 38 yards, 9.5 YPC, 1 rushing TD
Crap! Thank you!
I thought the spread was 33?
Agreed, BUT... he still finished with great stats anyway.
570 Total Yards. Would love to see us break 600.
Skip the first half.
514 total yards and counting.
Really wanna see Dwayne throw his first TD.

Not really offensive stats, though. I want to keep the focus firmly on what Lefty's doing.
