Whit's job is to look out for the best interest of VT football, and he thinks Frank can right the ship and get this program back to championship football.
And so do I. But the fact that Whit supports Frank (or the fact that I do) doesn't preclude us from having hypothetical conversations on whether or not this is the right time for Beamer to retire, or if the program would benefit from a head coaching change, or on if the risk of a coaching change is worth the potential gains one might bring, or any other hypothetical. We're dealing in pure conjecture here. The actual state of affairs has little bearing on the conversation, so long as we admit we're dealing in hypothetical and conjecture.
A good motivator and a good recruiter doesn't make a good OC.

I want my OC to be a bit of a football nerd in addition to a good coach. That's why I still have faith in Lefty.
I'd be 100% okay with amending the policy. Tyrod won ACC POY, so I'd like to see his retired, and would be absolutely onboard with Bam Bam Kam receiving the honor, too. But as the rule stands, I don't think there is anyone eligible who hasn't had their jersey retired.
By VT policy, a person has to win a national award to have their jersey retired. Has anyone won one recently?
Holy crap what a surge off the snap.
Where you been all my life?
No, again, I disagree.
The question in play is a cost/benefit analysis. It's an assertion that Beamer had peaked and is holding the program back from actualizing its potential. That argument merely supposes that there is some coach out there that would elevate the program's level of success, and further supposes that our athletic director could find him and entice him to take the job in Blacksburg. We don't actually have to name him.
A discussion of hypothetical replacements also has merit as a topic of conversation, but the argument CLThokie is making doesn't necessitate that discussion be had right now. Without getting into who replaces Frank, we can discuss:
- Can Frank elevate the current level of the program?
- If not, do we have faith in Whit Babcock to find someone else who can?
- Is it worth the risk inherent in a coaching change?
We don't need a list of candidates to discuss those three points.
No, I disagree. While I agree with you that CLThokie's tone has been disrespectful to an unquestioned first ballot HOF coach and he really, really needs to work on his presentation, his argument boils down to: Frank Beamer should retire because he's peaked and the game has passed him by.
We can have that conversation without the people who support CLThokie's position having to play athletic director and name a bunch of hypothetical successors.
It boils down to one question: are the potential gains of a head coach change worth facing the uncertainty of the process? We don't have to play the role of athletic director to answer that question, but we do have to factor in whether or not we trust our AD in the hiring process.
We can have the discussion of "we would be better off with Coach X than we are with Beamer," but that's not what CLThokie is arguing.
This is the best I've been able to come up with.
Hokiesports.com game log specifies who a pass is attempted to on most incomplete passes. Sometimes, though, it just says "Brewer, M pass incomplete." I also notice a lot of these coincide with a defender being credited for a QB hurry. So if was accept these entries where no receiver is listed as an intentional throwaway (regardless of whether or not a QB hurry is awarded on the play) we get this:

I'm not really satisfied with this answer because I'm not even confident about the data I'm using. But if we can just accept them as valid for the sake of argument we see this.
THROWAWAYS PER GAME
Games 1-5: 2.8
Games 2-13: 2.25
Season long: 2.5
Standard Deviation: 2.4
Basically, the adjustment to INTs had zero effect on throwaways, and there was no discernible trend to the number of throwaways over the duration of the season.
One notable thing: Brewer's best passer rating against FBS competition came in the game he had by far the most throwaways. (BC, 138.71 passer rating, 8 throwaways)
To be fair, that's a bit of a straw man question. It would be up to Whit to decide on a successor. Arguing it's time for Frank to hang it up doesn't necessitate naming the next coach. We can argue the merits of whether or not Frank has becomea hindrance on this program (I vote no) without having the discussion of who the next coach is.
A better question would be, is there any other misdemeanor that automatically results in a suspension for the player? If the answer is no, they'd have a very hard time defending this particular policy.
Perfect game plan on both sides of the ball, with O and D complementing each other all night.
Just read that the way they extended the offer to Foster was, Moorehead DMed Foster on Twitter saying to call him because he had a question. When Foster called, Both Aaron and Frank were on the line and they both extended the offer together by phone to this young man. Foster said in an interview with 247 it was a surprise that Frank was on the line when he called.
Our recruiting procedures have come so, so far since Frank shook up the staff.
Funny you should mention that. One thing I had looked at was the relationship between team yards per carry and Brewer's passer rating. My thinking was like yours: successful running game begets better passing performance. But in 2014 at least, the opposite held true.
VT averaged over 4 yards per carry against FBS competition three times in 2014: W. Mich (6.55), UVA (4.95) and Cincy (4.75). Against UVA Brewer had a passer rating very slightly higher than season average, while against W. Mich and Cincy his passer rating was under 100. Meanwhile his best passer rating all season against FBS competition (BC, 138.71) came in the game with our second worst YPC (2.4).
Problem with looking at this game by game, though, is I'm cherry picking in a season when the run game struggled in general. (Sound familiar?) To a certain extent, Brewer might have done well in games with less run support because he had to for us to have any shot to win (rise to the occasion, so to speak) and we may have had running success in games he struggled because Lefty was forced to stick with the run on a day Brewer was struggling.
If we can get the run game fixed, in eager to see if Brewer improves because of it.
I remember being so excited when Farris committed. He never quite played at the level I expected, but he was 100% Hokie and did whatever the coaches asked. I wish the future Mr. & Mrs. Farris all the luck in the world.
On another note, having seen the way that this group gelled throughout the season, and the caliber of recruits coming in on OL, does anyone else feel that Grimes going to LSU might be a blessing in disguise? I'm liking what Searels is doing.
No worse than the lions. Chalk it up to cosmic balance.
Ah yes, I stand corrected. I bow to your Buddha nature.
Understandable. They were both genetically engineered in the same government lab.
And all on short rest, IIRC. A Thursday night game after having played the previous Saturday.
K > C
So you got to see the best defense we ever fielded in person. I wasn't able to make it down to a game that year and I regret it. Would have loved to see that wrecking crew of a D in person.
How about as a Hokies fan then?
Question. If a defender arrives at the holder before or simultaneously with the kicker... can he just kick the ball the other way?
Sorry.
I was actually just trying to close it out on a funny note. That "racism is for lazy people" thing was a bit of stand up comedy I heard once and thought was clever. I didn't have any intention of maintaining an ongoing dialogue, and I'm not really trying to change anyone's opinion.

I'd still like to see some hard statistical data showing an improvement on offense. So far, none has been presented.
