Have her attend the career fair this year. It's usually late February or early march. Just have her go scouting firms. Most aren't going to be ready to hire a first year intern. But, she can talk to firms and see if there are any in the Roanoke area that interest her. Or, if she wants to go elsewhere during a future summer, there are tons there. She can get some practice talking to people this year, and then look at a design internship next year. She's welcome to come by my booth. We definitely won't be in a position to hire a first year. But I'll be happy to talk with her about her work and give advice.
She might be able to pull off a job with someone like Barrows. They're a big furniture outfit in Roanoke. They're not a residential furniture place. So, she would be exposed to more systems and types than she would in a regular furniture store.

Well coached that strategy could really end up as like the 2nd or 3rd best team with the amount of inconsistency and chaos that is standard in the ACC. Not sure it's a great long term strategy because I've yet to see that were well coached but not a terrible bridge for an "oh shit" year

Literally going after PFF grades in a moneyball-like strategy this portal season. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. I'm interested in seeing how many of these lower-level high-PFF players pan out.
You might want to check out the Apprentice School with Newport News Shipbuilding. It's not a traditional Engineering school, but there is a Marine Engineering option that has students attaining an Engineering degree from ODU.

Does she have any work sample from school to show? First year is tough to get paid design internships to be honest. Usually not enough skillset to be useful unfortunately. If getting paid is not a concern I would recommend approaching firms for unpaid internships. I did that for 3 years and it was a difference maker.
If money isn't a concern at all and looking for adventure I could reach out to few people I know here in China and Southeast Asia.
And as noted, if you haven't spoken to VTs internship placement program I would do that. I'm talking to them about setting up a few positions in the future, but in a different field unfortunately.
