I'm shocked that a for-profit business withheld quarter million dollar payments to hoops players on an NIT team. That is the part that is really surprising, since businesses don't mind losing money.
We'll see as more details emerge... assuming the players' claims are accurate (big assumption at this point), I have no sympathy for Hamilton/FSU. It's very simple; if you can't afford it, then don't promise it.
It could be worse! With the loss of head Coach Jake Dickert to Wake Forest, Washington State currently has 32 players in the portal, with zero incoming recruits so far.
The biggest winner of the first portal window so far is LSU, which welcomed eight blue-chip recruits including VT's CB Mansoor Delane and OG Braelin Moore.

Oh im not saying it was worse, I'm saying it has no benefit to the ACC, in fact its a net drain on the conference, IMO. The real lack of vision was the ACC holding onto the romance of regional sports- raycom and the friday of the ACC tournament of yesteryear... that was a clown decision- not realizing until hit in the head with a hammer that football drives the bus- and then they just became reactionary. Remember this is the league that wanted Syracuse- a school that didn't WANT to leave the Big East over VT- at the time a much better football brand. This is a conference that abandoned its academic standards and accepted louisville. why? fucking hoops that's why. Every decision - their little raycom network, the TV deal, adding the teams they added all were basketball decisions. They thought- incorrectly - of course that ESPN would overpay for ND football in terms of ACC home games- nope... so here we are. The only decision they didn't make for basketball was not fighting to keep Maryland in the conference.. They fucked this up in many ways... BUT it's not like the Pac 12 - now extinct- and the Big12 got much better deals from ESPN either.
There are legitimate arguments for and against the ND deal, but suggesting that it was anywhere remotely near as impactful as the botched ACCN launch is absolutely ludicrous.
The ACCN was announced at least 2 years late, and then took thrice as long to implement as any other conference network (and then took another 3+ years to get Comcast to carry it) - that right there is at best $75m of lost revenue per school (assumes ~$15m/school over 5 years).
ND gets about $6-$7m per year from the entire ACC.
The impact is order of magnitude different.

I think we'll try to get some OL before the Spring Semester starts and then have the Spring portal window to find extra pieces depending on when the DC is named and what they think we need. Either way nothing should be happening until after the 1st and realistically until after the bowl.
The best part of this is knowing that somewhere there is a Tennessee fan crying that they've become just a feeder school for the ACC.

Exactly this. The ACC has had inept (looking at you JP and JS) and/or corrupt leadership (looking at you JS) for too long.

The best deals in life and sports are where both sides get some or equal value. In this case, the ACC got nothing. zero.
Except in the NFL there is much less freedom of movement. You can't just leave your team unless your contract is up.
Weren't they the same recruiting class as Cam Rising? who is playing next year and Trevor Lawrence? yes whose been in the NFL 6 years?
Yeah bending over for ND was a terrible decision for the ACC and I hated it from the word go. Fucking dipshit conference

The expanded ACC coincided with both FSU and Miami cycling down (Bowden was entering his twilight years, and Larry Coker was losing control of the institutionally corrupt Miami program by that point). VT was the most steady and consistent team to carry the conference banner, but it wasn't enough to sustain it. Couple that with several of our high profile flubs on the national stage. The expanded ACC, had VT FSU Miami and Clemson all been able to get their act together at the same time, could have been compelling. But when VT's biggest challenge during some of those years was BC, not great for conference perception.
Couple that with the fact that most of the original ACC was just soft and never going to be a serious football conference. FSU literally dominated the league from their entrance to expansion. I honestly think if not for FSU joining, the ACC might not have gotten a Bowl Alliance/BCS auto bid.
The ACC has just been too Tobacco Road/basketball centric for far too long. They have had no vision for the league and just have a policy of appeasement. Remember Miami was the big fish for expansion to appease FSU for football, and the other original add was Syracuse instead of us to appease Tobacco Road for basketball. BC was a horrible pick to get us to 12, and then the 2012-13 expansions with Pitt and Cuse were totally unnecessary and solely geared around basketball. While everyone else was focused 100% on football.

Correct. VT is bad now. Bad. Back then we were not.
VT wasn't bad, but we weren't world beaters. We were a quarter away from the championship game in 2007, but we had been taken to the woodshed by LSU who actually won the championship that year. 2006 we did t have a QB but might have been a champion contender if Marcus wasn't immature. Outside of those two years our best year was when we lost to JMU or when 9-3 Clemson beat us soundly twice. Our record against top 5 and top 10 speaks for themselves. We were good, we won a lot of games and we made a lot of great teams work for it, but we always feel short. It's really hard to be a great teams it's really hard to be a consistently good team so I'm not trying to take anything away from the team or what they accomplished, but from 2004 to 2012, FSU and Miami weren't great and often not good, and Clemson was still clemsoning. Ee played better competition in the 90s than the 2000s.
