Agreed, off the top of my head I think Barnett only got pressure from the outside once. But several times they blew up the interior of the line, Petit in particular, which was one of the things most of us were worried about after watching the Liberty game. Most teams don't have talent and depth in the middle like Tennessee, but it's a concern moving forward.

# | Ask TKP: What's your one positive and negative takeaway from Battle at Bristol? First of all, don't think I'm saying you're wrong at all, as it very well could be the case....
But if there are players who aren't buying into the system after seeing what it can do against a team poised to challenge for the playoffs this year when we aren't legitimately stopping ourselves with penalties and careless turnovers, then those players might not be the best fits for this team anymore. You can't have a division like that in a locker room when a coaching staff is trying to rebuild the offensive culture, and actually showing legitimate signs of having something that works. Which is a heck of a lot more than we've had in about 25 years.
I thought the OTs played well. The pressure I saw was from petit getting run over.

Positive: We have an offensive identity. My biggest complaint about our lost decade (and a half) was that we didn't know who we were on offense. We tried a little of this and a little of that and none of it worked. Now we know who we are and what we want to do, we just need to focus on doing it better and more consistently. That will take time, and likely a couple of recruiting classes, but you can SEE it now, unlike the clown show we witnessed ever since that fateful day in December, 2001.
Negative: We are an undisciplined football team. We took stupid penalties on offense and defense. We missed a FG and our punt game stinks. Our best OL has been benched repeatedly for actions on and off the field. We've made more jokes about lost fumbles and loluva's spring game than the number of fans at loluva's last three spring games combined. "We had a bad week of practice." The team couldn't recover momentum after the first big turnover. I don't know what the answer to all these issues is, it might just be time, but I hope Fuente figures it out quickly.
At the end of the day if we can address the turnover issues and stabilize the OL, this is a team that will make some noise in the ACC-C this year. I'm optimistic that our O will put up points on everyone and the D looks very good, erratic LB play aside. What we can't do is lose to Tennessee twice like we did boyzee. I think we bounce back this week, then redeem ourselves against ECU and head into the meat of the conference schedule with some momentum. If we can go 2-2 against Pitt/UNCheat/Miami/ND, I think this team might just hit the over and go 9-3, but 8-4 still feels right. And for Fuente's first year, that's not bad at all.
Actually, I felt pretty safe at 14-0 at ECU last year. However, the ensuing mental agony that game caused taught me to never assume ANYTHING again based on a 2 TD lead.
I just read through this thread at work with tears coming out of my eyes because I was attempting to laugh quietly. God I love TKP.
Thank you for posting this. It was definitely a bad call by the refs in my opinion.

smh. Damn I feel old.
we had what I thought was pretty good seats. until I got in them. I couldn't make out or follow the ball at all. I could barely see any #s for either team. I know it is a once in a lifetime experience and for that I am glad because I don't know if I would do it again if I had the change. I had a blast but at the end of the day im there to see hokie football and from where I was sitting I was not easily able to do so.
Some of the penalties were questionable, a few of them were bone headed like Moto and Baron's roughing penalties. Both of those guys hit the QB in the head with both hands. It looked very intentional, and very moronic.
We just simply have to get more receivers involved and experienced.
Tyrod had several incredible deep throws to Sammy last year with man under and a deep safety. The issue is that they didn't let him throw downfield at all in this game. That said, if they don't open up the playbook and get their head out of their mid 2000's ass, Ryan and especially Greg Roman won't be there next year.
I think that we outplayed Tennessee everywhere but on the scoreboard. I haven't watched the game on tv yet, and not sure I will in its entirety, but were all of those penalties legit? Colossus, the big a$$ jumbotron, did not do a good job of showing key parts of plays. Did we really rough the passer that much, or were they being picky? Did Teller earn his penalties? It all just seemed a bit much.
Anyway, I saw a lot of good. When our offense finds a rhythm, it's damn good, and overall our defense was solid. Anyone will give up points when the other team gets the ball 4 times inside your 30. Especially when the other team is good. If we learn from this and build, or O can become scary, and our Defense is already headed there. We have the potential to make some noise in the ACC this year. And if both sides of the ball are in track by mid November, we could give ND a game.

Negative-> ball security and body language on offense 2nd and 3rd quarter.
yeah I was extremely disappointed in the whole presentation. I had a couple of my buddies with me that were UT fans and they were excited to see enter sandman for the 1st time and even they were extremely disappointed when it didn't happen. everything about the presentation of the game seemed rushed and heavily UT biased.
I actually had a pretty great experience. We got to the stadium about 6:30 and it took me 5 minutes to get through the gate. Not sure why some gates had it so much worse but I couldn't believe how easy it was for me to get in and get out of the stadium and I had a LOT of stairs to climb.
They were out of water when I went to a concession stand once but the stadium wasn't actually out of water, they just couldn't restock it fast enough. I know the lines were crazy long but I'm not sure what they could have done, every concession line I saw was open. Overall when you have 157k people in one place everything takes a long time.
I think there are deep threats but I rewatched the game last night and our line got man handled up front anytime evans didn't get the ball out quick. we have the WRs to go deep that is not the issue. bucky and Isaiah have proved that they can get open deep for 2 years now against good secondarys. fuente in 2 weeks has shown in his play calling that he wants to go deep and can the 2 plays to bucky against liberty were pure play calling beauties as well as the one to Isaiah that was underthrown against UT. I wouldn't worry about the deep ball. id worry about the line play. it has to be better.
I think we'll be more than okay. Honestly, I think we are the better team, we just weren't the better team that night.
I feel very confident in our ability to win the Coastal after the first two games of the season. The fumbles will be fixed, and Jerod has shown a good ability so far to protect the ball through the air. The penalties won't be an issue moving forward; we'll have our share, but I think it was more a result of the game atmosphere, venue, and the way things were going for us that led to a lot of those. No excuse for it, but I think that was the reason. So my only concern is the OL. Run blocking is okay, and at times it is good, but Pass Pro continues to be a weakness. And now Fuente and Co. are doing a lot of shifting on the OL.
As far as our first ACC contest against BC this weekend. I don't like going against Lefty. Go watch VT's first TD against Ohio St. in the 2015 game. Leftly went to this play several times, and I have a feeling he will try to pull it out at just the right time this weekend. Hopefully we cover the play well.
And how about that unsportsmanlike conduct flag that they threw, and then picked up the flag saying no foul. Clearly late, clearly shoulda been 15 yds

PS Wyatt's second chop block was absolute BS.. he starts contact at the hips and slides down. However you can see the ref look back late so to him looks like he went straight for the legs.

some confusion on him being ejected-> sounds like FU pulled him and not the officials.
As someone who watched on TV they didn't show it. Seems like an easy story that could have been done.

Same - no reason to ever repeat this experience but I'm glad I was there.
Tenn will be no where to be found come playoff discussion time. They aren't any better then they were last year. Would expect another 9ish win season and probably winning the east, but even that is in question now.
