Letting Dr. Nick Riviera handle medical duties for VT was a bad call. How many guys over the last 4 years got hurt and never got back to 100%?
It's an inside zone. The nose guard is playing a one-technique, the linebacker to the boundary is shaded a bit outside, and the defensive end is in a two-point stance shaded to the outside of Nijman's left shoulder. With that front, Teller and Gallo are ultimately responsible for blocking the nose and the play-side LB.
An inside zone is a much more downhill play, whereas the outside zone has much more a stretch to it. The latter provides more of an opportunity for a true double team at the LOS with the pair of OL keeping their eyes open for a LB at the second level.
In a situation like this, I was taught to release and block the LB, but throw an arm into the shoulder of the nose on the way out. A jab will knock the nose off balance and help the center get his head around. Wyatt could've done that.
However, given that the play-side LB seemed shaded a bit, Gallo could have communicated with Teller at the LOS to hot tail it to the LB to make sure he doesn't shoot the gap. It's one of these things we don't know.
With that said, I expect Gallo to get his head around a I-AA nose tackle and make the block. Moreover, I think every football player is taught to go out and hit someone if they blow an assignment (which I don't think Wyatt did). Teller's the only dude upfront who paves defenders on a regular basis. If Tech wants to beat Tennessee, they will need that toughness.
Regardless, Stroman's play makes me feel better about playing those spread teams like UNC later this year.
I also think we threw a bunch of deep balls yesterday to try and get some practice in on new competition. Thus all fades and what not.
Against the stronger teams like Tennessee I'm sure we'll have some more intermediate passes and checked plays.
They will learn because we will teach them.

Yep, pretty much agree with all. I love Sam Rogers, but he's never been an explosive back, and has never broken any long runs. No issues using him in multiple ways, but as a "traditional" tailback, we need to get away from that, and quickly.
In my limited experience, they talk more about VT than they do their own program. They have little brother syndrome something fierce...
Their only points were on a scoop and score and then on a ten yard field. I'm not sure that comment was meant for us, but it would be disingenuous to hear that even as a Liberty fan.
Shai was the best back yesterday. Travon looked a step slow honestly. Shai needs to start b@b

# | Hokies Defense Holds Serve, Offense Shows Potential against Liberty Interior OL play was below average without Teller in. That was the most troubling thing about the whole game to me. They collapsed the pocket from the interior many times in pass pro and the run game was pathetic against an FCS team.
I want Teller in the game every snap and Shai and Travon to split the carries, none for Sam.
Terrell played well too,so either way it made sense.
God gave me opportunities, but I didn't take them.....regret that now.....no kids of my own, but two step-kids, two step-grandsons and a step-granddaughter announced yesterday due to arrive in March. Even though the ex and I divorced years ago, and I've missed a lot of participation in their lives, I'm blessed to still be included as part of the family..... can't imagine the pain of losing any of them. Stepson and I had very different personalities, so weren't really close, but yesterday he told me I was always consistent, he always knew I loved him, and that he learned a lot more from me than he ever did from his dad (and his dad is a great guy that I proudly call friend).....you can't imagine how much that means to me!
Anyway, my point is, I've been down on myself lately (job, finances, love-life, distant aging parents, etc), and your post helped remind me how truly blessed I am. Your son sounds like he was a great guy, I'm sure thanks to you and your wife. I will include y'all in my prayers tonight, and ask for peace and joy for your family.
Seemed to be no respect from the Liberty coach with the "they just made more plays then us" comment. But I guess you have to earn respect before you get it. But it's not what it used to be when teams would say "well it's Virginia Tech and we have to get better."
My favorite observation: Anybody notice the second line on kick returns? Mihota, Baron, Tim Settle, and Cunningham. Those three on the right are a lot of beef. If they get moving downhill, watch out. Something very interesting is going to happen on a kick return this year. I generally predict lots of good field position, but got forbid somebody kicks short to Settle.
One thing I was happily surprised by, Vinny played as a stand up rusher a good amount and looked good off the line. On that forced fumble in the first quarter he was there in a flash.
There's now a thread on The Sabre asking if they will win a single game this year. Can't make this up.
