College basketball is indeed a business. One big component of business is the contract. Now, I'll not begrudge anyone the right to renegotiation at an appropriate juncture, but I'd like to see him honor more than two years of a 7 year deal. We bemoan recruits that renege on their commitments, and I'm not saying I'm gonna trash Buzz if he leaves, it's just that I will reserve the right to have my say about it either way. Believe me, I am a big Buzz fan, have been excited by his hiring and really hope he stays with us, yes, for selfish reasons. I have been a Hokie as long as Buzz has been alive, though, and I know where MY loyalty lies. Just saying that if you aren't Buzz or his family, what are you then? Chopped liver? Those recruits and players have families too, and it's not like Buzz will be crowned a king somewhere, he'll just have another job. Honor the spirit of the contract and I'll have nothing to say but goodbye, thanks, and good luck in your next job.

Was surprised that Chuck Clark was listed as corner back in latest roster. Andy Bitter's latest articles seemed to indicate he was going to be back at safety again. With more coaches in the backfield it will be interesting to see what determines how the most talented players are divided up. Guess it's a good thing that so many of our players seem flexible. Both Edmunds and Adonis Alexander at rover seems like a waste ... would think they'd both be first string at
some position.

Really need to see D Johnson and Ladler compete at corner for depth. Does Payne get in the mix at safety depth? I get the feeling that with Faycson being out of action Bud is going to be working a patchwork secondary in the fall.

Yes I agree. I'd even warrant that we could achieve 9-10 Ws. The D does need some serious retooling and reloading with better recruits.

A lot of the players' heights/weights/positions have been updated but a lot of them, haven't. I wouldn't look too closely into this roster update.

Even with that said, my preferred defensive back lineup looks like,
CB- Adonis Alexander
CB- Facyson (if healthy)
Nickel- Mook
FS- Terrell Edmunds
SS- Chuck Clark

Yea the more I looked at it I was thinking the same thing. After all the talk about having our best athletes in the secondary at corner (ie. guys like Adonis) we see not only Adonis still at rover, but also Edmonds 2.0 and Mook moving away from corner. There is no way that none of those guys are at corner come Liberty. It will be interesting to see how this fleshes out.

It also makes me wonder if Ladler could see any playing time at Nickel this year. Given the amount of talent in the secondary it makes we lean towards not so much but we all know that that position has been used as an introductory position for young/inexperienced but highly touted corners quite often in the past.

French any thoughts? I mean I know it's too early to speculate on Ladler but I need to fill the void that is the off season. Also was that style of usage of the Nickel more of a Torrian decision or a Bud decision?

I wouldn't put too much stock into the secondary chart at this point. If I recall correctly, we had this same situation/discussion last year and probably the year before. Bud seems to like to get his DBs experience at every secondary position especially with all of the injuries they have been plagued with in recent years. I'm sure things will settle out in a way more like what French proposed by season's start. Stroman's problem, in my opinion, is that he looks too much and thinks too much. If Shibest can get him to find an opening quickly and hit it, Stroman could be special.

I agree with you on the culture piece. We have the continuity of the defense even though we will be young. IMO, our offensive production will be consistent with last year or slightly better. Fuente made it clear he tailors to his personnel which has weapons like Ford, hodges, and TM. With a qb and 2 more receivers stepping up, we have all the pieces to be an 8 win team. The question in my mind is will the coaches force scheme thinking ahead to 2017 or will they stick to their guns, and do whatever it is we do best this year. To me, our season will be as successful as our QB play.

Potential transfers:

We would have an advantage with any kids that they may not want to go be a part of such a major rebuild.

We would have an advantage in keeping Clarke and Rob, two Virginians.

Hudson and Bibbs weren't Buzz recruits.

Leday and Allen have already transferred once, may not want to do it again. And they would need to be graduates to be eligible.

Maybe Blackshear leaves? Not a Virginia native, has a redshirt year.

The hardest situation is Hill. He's a Buzz guy, close relationship, Buzz said "I will make the decision on his redshirt year, not Med or his mom." Now, if he transfers, he has to sit out another year? I don't see it. In fact, Buzzs relationship to Med is a big factor in why buzz may stay.

Final point: buzz thinks Chew is ready. I would interview him, especially if he keeps the team together. It's not a Whit hire, but Buzz did well taking over for Crean at Marquette (he had one year as a HC for UNO but bolted after Katrina).

Those are about my expectations as well. To start with, I want to win that Wooden tourney. Ucla, aTm, Dayton, Nebraska, New Mexico....we can win that.

That will get us in the top 25, where I want to see us stay.

Next goal: top 4 seed in ACCT. that bye gives you a chance to win it.

Then a top 5 seed in the NCAA. That gives you an advantage to get to the 2nd weekend. Once you get there, anything can happen.

{bonus goal: higher ACCT and NCAA seed than UVA}

We could use a grad transfer for the post, but it has to be an obvious upgrade over Pierce. Washington from Wake is not an obvious upgrade, I would rather just keep Satch.

We need to keep Hudson and Wilson, the two obvious contributors who may want to go elsewhere for more time. Hudson has so
Much talent, hopefully he doesn't see Hills return as a negative since they are so close in skills.

Finally, I'm really excited for Hill. I think he can be All-ACC. He can be most improved like Blossomgame was this year.

ooooooooo.....I can't wait!!! I haven't gotten mine yet. I also haven't checked my mail recently. I assumed it would come common carrier like FedEx or UPS but I guess it's small enough to be stuffed in a mailbox by the USPS.

Thanks for posting. It's interesting to see a former player's take on the current situation in Blacksburg. It seems that DV is in wait-and-see mode. I think that, perhaps unfairly, most of us are unrealistically optimistic about the very near future. The big take-away is that Fuente has to build a new culture and identity in Blacksburg. That is important because fans need to realize that kind of change doesn't happen in a single off-season. The Hokies are going to have their growing pains this year.

I've been guilty of this myself but I think too many of us look at what Fuente did at Memphis and compare the starting roster he had there with the starting roster he has at VT and think that we'll see a quicker turn-around. As great as that would be I think that is a dangerous expectation. VT managed 7 win seasons for a few years with relatively the same type of roster that Fuente is starting with. Memphis managed 1 and 2 win seasons with the roster that Fuente started with there. His first season with that roster he got the team to 4 wins. They seemingly regressed in his second year by winning only 3. It wasn't until his third season that the team started playing on a level that many people are expecting in Blacksburg this August.

When you change the culture, like I think Fuente is doing, there is going to be some lag. Players have to catch up to the changes and it takes a couple recruiting cycles to get players who truly buy into the culture and system. A vast majority of the players on the roster now were not recruited by Fuente or his staff. The culture they bought into originally is different from the culture that he's trying to build now. Making that switch isn't easy for players and not everyone is going to make that switch 100%.

I do expect to see modest improvements over the course of the season. I fully expect our November to look better than our September. Our schedule definitely sets up favorably for us to rebuild. I just don't think it is fair to expect more than 7-8 wins. I wouldn't even be surprised if we stumble to a 6 win season. It is extremely rare for a coach to come in and turn a football program around significantly in his first season. It has happened but I don't think we should expect that to happen under Fuente. I think he is a really good coach and I'm excited for his career at VT but I think his style is to build methodically and instill a certain culture and attitude into his team. He's not a gimmick offensive guy who is going to install his entire offense in 3 practices and start torching teams from day 1. It is going to take time.
