Late to the party. 16 year old has wanted to experiment with deep frying, so I used this as a chance to teach basic deep fry principles for using an outdoor fry set. We fried wings, crab rangoon, jalapeo poppers, onion rings, and mushrooms. Also got a bushel of oysters.
For the wings, bought them frozen, thawed, and let sit covered with only paper towel to get a crispy skin starting Friday. Bought mild and hot wing sauces to toss, and made a kick it up rub for those it want it HOT. Heat to 375, add 10 wings of similar size, stir occasionally to prevent sticking, and fry until 30 seconds after the last one floats. toss with rub, sauce or both while the next batch fries.
Rub: 1/4 TSP ground dried habanero pepper, ghost pepper, black tongue scorpion pepper, red thai pepper, and berbere spice blend, garlic powder. Add 1 TBSP brown sugar, Lowrey's season salt. Add 1 tsp thyme, cardamom, sage, and ms t salt free chicken seasoning.
For crab rangoon - bought wonton wrappers. put a tsp softened cream cheese and a piece of imitation crab in the middle, brushed the side with egg wash and folded over and pressed hard to seal. Had to cool the old to 325 to keep from frying to fast. Took about 30 seconds per side to get golden brown,
Poppers - (wear gloves!) broil peppers (or grill) until burnt black. Transfer to a sealed container to cool. Rub off skin, remove seeds. stuff with soft cream cheese (or grated mexican cheese). toss in flour, dip in egg wash, roll in bread crumbs, refrigerate to set and harden cheese. Throw 10-15 in deep fryer at a time until toasty brown.
Onion rings, mushrooms. Make right before frying. Start with 1 cup beer (I use New Castle) to one cup flour. Add flour (or beer) until pancake consistency. I season with Lowrey's, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and sugar. Dip veggies until completely coated, drop in fryer, and separate. careful to not overcrowd. Flip over when top batter starts to set to get even browning. I tried Sweet Baby Rays special sauce with them, which was a hit.
30 some oysters were served raw, 35 where roasted at 400 until the first ones opened, and 35 were in a steamer basket on the stove until they opened (over-cooked for me, but some people like them that way.
Rooted for the Panthers, but not an NFL fan. Fourth game I watched through all season. Ate and drank to much. Not a fan of the Panther Juice someone brought, but the company was great.
I'm not trying to be snarky here. I'm genuinely curious. How close are you to the kids who make these decisions to know exactly what motivates them? Are you in academics? Have you advised these recruits in the past? Are you a recruiter or agent type? How do you have that experience to know those things?
So what is this experience?
My experience is that kids ultimately do not follow other kids. They go to schools because they like the program as a whole, the coaches, the education, the weather, the facilities, the chicks, the location...but they rarely go because their HS buddy did or a couple other good players in their recruiting class did.
That youngest girl is sassy!
I don't disagree with what you're saying. I do think that Fuente liked Burden and wanted to keep him around but he already had a WR coach so he put Burden with the RBs because that is the opening that needed to be filled. A lot of position coaches have experience coaching positions different from what they played. Some head coaches have coached multiple positions on their way up the ladder to HC.
That being said, I also agree with HokieBen87 that the stated reason probably isn't the actual reason. Maybe a happy side-effect. Possibly also how Fuente sold Burden on the move. I think the coaches felt like they needed a better reason than "well, we needed a RB coach and Burden needed a job...sooo....." for PR purposes. It's a little bit on the lazy side but there is also some truth to it so it made sense for them to sell the move as more of an experience builder for Burden.
I've heard rumors that Kermit Buggs, ODU's DB coach is in consideration.

Grew up a Hokie (Dad graduated in '84) but contrast that with my time at VT:
Fall of '07-Spring of '11
We won the ACC 3/4 years in football and should've been to at least three NCAA Tourneys.
Very spoiled.
I think that this would be a nice slap to LOLUVAs face. If the guy can coach and work within Bud's D and recruit his butt off in VA.
Serendipity is the word that comes to mind.
Are you serious or just joking?
I will never pass up the opportunity to say I've been at a kegger with Sands. It was awesome.
Or perhaps coaching different positions isn't nearly as much of a leap as many fans think? Particularly going from one set of skill positions (say, receivers) - which share a number of similar responsibilities, requirements, and drills - to another (say, RBs)?
That's easy for a horse to do. How many hands high are you?
I was going to comment on this, but I have a tendency to be condescending.
(That means I talk down to people)
As a Panthers fan, I will say that the Broncos defense is easily one of the best ever, EASILY. They destroyed Roethlisberger, Brady, and Newton, and I mean destroyed.
A shutdown defense added to a offense that could at least get a 1st down would have been fine.
Someone said last night that shutdown defenses make games unwatchable/boring. When it's my Broncos doing the shutting down, I think it was one of the best SBs ever. One in every 6.25 SBs has had my Broncos in as the AFC champions. We don't win them all but when we do, it feels sooooo goooood. Times when I like both pie & cake. My excitement got so fully dipped after that clinching TD, I almost threw up in my mouth.
It fits perfectly! Thanks for the addition!
We went through a LOT of barbecue...
9 should be the minimum, with Ohio State, the current holder of that spot getting smacked around by PSU this weekend.
Here you go...they look excited to be in Blacksburg, but who wouldn't be?
Family's first day in Blacksburg. Didn't take my kids long to see what a special place this is & join Hokie Nation!! pic.twitter.com/mOduiKkt4S— Ben Hilgart (@CoachHilgart) February 7, 2016
Walk on
Good solid post spot on and I too like to pull for these kids. If my memory serves me correct we have had a few 1 or 2 stars and walk ons that have done very well for themselves through hard work in the weight room and on field work ethic. Hoping Dean is in the same fold.
If the Panthers want Jeffrey, he would probably be willing to take a discount. Pretty obvious he wants to be here, not sure he is affordable though.
Can't wait for Benjamin to come back. We missed him out there last night.
