In response to above, I definitely do not consider myself on the "lunatic fringe," but I was more than slightly surprised that Wiles was retained with the new Staff.

Wiles may be a perfectly nice guy, but his recruiting success (or lack thereof) essentially speaks for itself. Tim Settle was recruited by Gray and Foster, btw.

The miss here was not in having Bailey sign elsewhere but having spent so much time with the kid and (apparently) being unaware that it was so important to him and family to play with his Brother. We recruited this kid like he was a high-4* with at least 2 in-homes. At some point the question of "Do you want to play with your Brother?" should have been asked.

If we did not want to offer both, that is fine and we should have backed off of Jaquan rather than continuing to expend resources on him. To have him commit somewhere else this late and be so caught off-guard by it is just too reminiscent of prior NSD and not doing your homework

Thanks for the explanation. Given how Bud continues to "tweak" the D it's not surprising that there may be a change. I'll be interested to see if it does change as you think it might.

Also, Bud just said that Belmar might grow into a DE.

Well, if you are a tournament fisherman, you sure do worry about the ones that got away. The rest of us shouldn't worry about them, but we don't forget them. They always seem to grow bigger and more important as time goes by, too. Oh well, one thing is a fact...it happens, you try to learn from what went wrong, then try to do better next time.

Having an Iowa Hawkeye wife (from the Des Moines area) I've been out there quite a bit, and I love Iowa. Not so much on the Iowa winters, but outside of those months, Iowa is spectacular. I haven't spent much time in Ames, but it is not very far from Des Moines (about a 30 min ride down I-35, as I recall). Ames seemed nice, didn't get into Iowa State area, though. Des Moines is a very nice city, roughly the same size as Richmond maybe slightly larger. Agreed w/IL Hokie about the other areas too. Quad Cities seems like a pretty nice place. Iowa City is very nice.

Beckett brings the attitude. Love his film. So much will hinge on his size and reach and how that contributes to him fitting and then defeating blocks.

Yeah, one of these days we need to have the complete conversation about Seth Allen. He does so much good, but his bad is so glaringly bad that it can cover up the benefit he provides to the team. I've always found Bill Simmons' writing entertaining and he has a theory about this that, like all of his theories, is completely unprovable but is fun to think about. I keep coming back to it when I think about Seth. It's his "Ten Percent Theory". Here's a link to the piece where he throws it out the first time.

I actually ran into [Jeff] Van Gundy outside a Miami hotel on Monday night, one day before the biggest game of Westbrook's young life. I brought up his Francis comparison and threw one of my hairbrained theories at him: the "10 Percent Theory." Even the best NBA players have holes; in a best-case scenario, they're tapping into about 90 percent of their total potential, with the holes representing the other 10 percent. We can either dwell on the 90 percent or the 10 percent ... and some holes are less glaring than others. For instance, Larry Bird's biggest hole was his inability to defend quicker forwards without help. (Same for Dirk Nowitzki.) You could hide that specific hole on the right team, with the right coaches, the right teammates and even the right matchups. But something like Rajon Rondo's shaky jumpshot, or the Botox Face that afflicted Karl Malone in crunch time? There's a case of the 10 percent flashing like a neon sign. Again, some holes are more glaring than others. But EVERYONE has holes.

On Oklahoma City, it's tougher to see Kevin Durant's 10 percent (he's not strong enough yet to prevent defenders like Shane Battier from hounding him 25 feet from the basket and denying him the ball, and he's not a consistently good enough defender yet) than Westbrook's 10 percent (his recklessness, which permeates everything he does, good and bad). You notice when Westbrook shoots 27 times, you notice when he bricks an ill-fated 3 in a huge spot, and you notice when he's bowling someone over for a charge because he thought he could dunk over three guys.

Seth Allen fits this perfectly. His energy getting to the rim scores us a lot of points and provides a spark for the rest of the team. I think LeDay has benefited greatly from Seth Allen because defense has to help stop Seth, leaving LeDay the chance to clean up. BUT... Seth Allen's energy and aggressiveness leads him to take an ill-advised 3 with 27 seconds left on the shot clock late in a game where we have to hold onto a lead. That's a pretty brutal 10 percent of his game that is a glaring fault.

That of course leads to the question of is it "worth it" to have Allen on the court. Even though I am developing ulcers and consistently wish I had a prescription of Xanax, I give a resounding YES to Allen getting the amount of playing time he gets. His energy is irreplaceable and his points are key to keeping us in games. And he really could work on these faults. He just needs to listen to the voice in his head saying "DON'T SHOOT!" whenever there are 27 seconds left on the shot clock.

One more question: Do you all get the feeling that Buzz is hesitant to pull him back or make him be less aggressive?

With Taylor, I see twitch kind of like Hewitt. He can bend his body to thwart blocking angles and get leverage. In the past, Wiles would use twitch to describe his DEs as guys who had terrific speed off the snap and then could bend their bodies flat down the line to make plays. I don't see that in Taylor- at least not in his junior film.

As I hinted above... I think we are seeing some changes in defensive philosophy. We will know more when we see how Edmunds and Gaines are used this spring and we see who the Hokies really focus on early in the 17 recruiting process.

Maybe Momma Bailey had a heart-to-heart with him this morning.

I completely understand why everyone is upset about this. We thought he was a lock and every action he has made up until this morning only supported that fact. But to be honest, this case of "missing a recruit" is a lot easier to swallow than others we've had in the past.

Am I happy he's going to Iowa State? Absolutely not. But at least I can understand this decision instead of one that doesn't make sense (i.e. a defensive recruit picking UNC over VT because of UNC's "defense" and "academics")

Since I'm bored, here are the signee offers per Hokie Sports. Bolded big boy offers (subject to debate)

Well, if there's a pretty woman in a picture, I guarantee I'm going to notice her, and so to you I bequeath a couple of legs, regardless of what you were thinking.

So Joe, French others in the know answer me this please. Can Tech go offer other kids today? Is there a time limit on offers going out? Find a kid who got spurned by his top choice and offer him? It happens for medical residencies why not for football?

This is exactly the type of guy I was hoping they would offer a scholarship. He is a football player he makes plays. He's not the biggest not the tallest he's not the fastest but his football IQ is off the charts any just makes plays. And he really wants to come to Tech and made that known for a while

That's something that most of us will probably never know. I'd like to give the kid the benefit of the doubt and hope that he was respectful to Fuente with his decision.

However, I believe this kid was a late round addition to our target list. I could be wrong but I don't believe we were holding a special spot in our offer list for him that would've gone to someone else. Now, if we missed out on 2 people because we thought he was committing and didn't recruit someone else, that would have come to VT, then that's obviously a low blow and I would lose a little bit of respect for his decision. But I don't believe that was the case.

If he was that important to us, then I would have offered his brother too. I know Beamer & Co. has done that in the past with recruits' teammates/brothers. But Fuente might not believe in doing that or his brother just was not that good to even warrant using another scholarship. I would think they at least mentioned a grey shirt or preferred walk-on spot for his brother.

Found it thanks, I was just opening my already opened from days ago tap for Hokiesports it was on the opening page. Thanks for the help.
