I've noticed this a lot on this board, and I'm as guilty as anyone when jumping on board the hype train, but we really had unrealistic expectations this season. Basketball is about chemistry. This team has barely played together 4 months with all the pieces. We're missing our most important player--the ultimate Buzz guy in Hill. We got beat by St. Joes away from home. The world isn't falling. This team was never winning 20 games. It's a process. We've improved over last season. I think even Buzz said it, we're playing a year 3 schedule with a year 2 team.

Buzz inherited a really good team at Marquette and had instant success. Buzz inherited a dumpster fire here. The embers are just now starting to smoke...give it time.

Buzz hasn't even been to the final four...I mean heck..he's had 2 years....how hard is it??

You're totally right....that Izzo guy is there every year. If Buzz doesn't get us there this year, we need to show him the door! /s

How much more of a gap could they create that would produce enough relative difference in income to erase a 55M dollar expense, or whatever portion is for the shiny toys?

Well, according to USA Today, in 2014, Alabama generated just over $150M in revenue, and had roughly $120M in expense. Clemson generated just under $75M and spent just under $73.5M to support their athletic department. So I would say that there is a large gap for them to close.

Now, I can't be sure that this is a strategically sound decision, but I highly doubt an athletic dept would spend 2/3 of their annual revenue to just "keep up with the Jones'" and not analyze the financials with intense scrutiny.

They're no joke, but we shouldn't get hammered by them. No doubt they have history, but losing by 17 this year is a bit tough. But moving into next year, I hope/expect to beat them as a sign of progress.

This year's team is basically very young and brand new. Lumps in the ACC this year. IF kids develop this off season, we see hope in ACC play next year. IF another off season of development, then ACC competitiveness.

Could Seth have tried harder to keep kids who were not a fit for his personality / his team culture? Mebbe. But they they wouldn't have been Seth teams. They would have been coddled AAU "think I'm a superstar" type kids. Or "I'm kinda just here....never gonna make the NBA... have a good time get a degree kids". Seths teams are gonna be really good and the kids will be better men via association with Seth.

Unfortunately there is a price to be put on that... another couple of years of hard struggle. Hope these kids don't lose faith. We have kids who could make the NBA if they work consistently hard for 3/4 years.

Seth is a great hire and we're going to be happy how Seth impacts his players and university.

NO issues with football. Guy is a great coach and should have enough talent to get this thing running very well next year. Bud may not realize it but he is going to look forward to being a DC next year or maybe the year after. Taking that weight off his shoulders is going to free his side of the ball to do special things. Things most of us remember and associate with VT football.

I think this pretty much summed up how all of us felt on campus after the shootings. Completely and utterly helpless and all we could do was care.

And I get that. My question is, though, win or lose, how much will the result of the Independence Bowl affect you throughout the offseason and flavor your expectations for the 2016 season?

flavoring expectations for next season (now I'm hungry) is an important distinction. Unless our defense gets mauled I don't think this game will have any bearing on my outlook for 2016.

However, I will always be saddened by the fact Beamer finished his career with a losing record by losing his last game to a pretty mediocre team from a pretty mediocre conference. I would be much happier knowing Beamer ended his career with a win to cap off an unprecedented string of winning seasons in Blacksburg.

The result of this game will undoubtedly leave a taste in my mouth despite all of the changes the program is going through right now. I would prefer for that taste to be sweet rather than sour. Will that taste influence my expectations for next season, though? Not likely.

I get what supercell was trying to do with the update and I thought it would be good, but at least at as fairly new town hall 10, its become impossible to farm elixir. Its hard to build up elixir for what things cost at th10. Once I reach the point about 3.5 million in storage I get raided by a max th10 or 11, even if I had almost no gold or dark elixir. . The reverse is not true as I had 4 mil in gold and plenty of dark elixir for 3 or 4 days and never got raided. This tells me that elixir is truly hard to come by at least at this level.

My focus right now is to try and farm gold and get my defense upgraded first, while dumping any excess elixir into walls. This will probably mean my lab will sit idle quite a bit now.

The optimist in me says that they underestimated the impact the update would have on elixir at least at the higher levels and that they will do something to pump more elixir into the game in a future update. The cynic on me says this was intentional in order get people to gem more.

I agree with OP. UVA was far more important than this game. If I could 'trade' wins, I would have much rather beat UNC (Franks last game at home) than this game against Tulsa.

Obviously I want us to win this game - two biggest motivators are to send Frank out on top, and avoid our first sub .500 season since '92. That being said, I've definitely spent significantly more time reading up about Fuente/next season than I have this bowl game. Can't remember another time when that was the case.

I would love to see Beamer pull out all the stops. Come after every punt and field goal, reverse punt and kick returns, maybe a little flea flicker action. Let us have one more beamerball game before its over. But it will have a lasting effect, Beamer is Virginia Tech and will always be. A win cements a lasting good memory instead of the mediocrity we are used to in recent years.
