What do these two players have in common?

They're the only two number one NFL draft picks out of Virginia Tech, and they're both from Virginia.

If I had to pick two players that put VT on the map, I'd pick those two.

Your point is well-taken that VT gets a lot of talent from out of state, particularly recently, but they've also gotten a lot of talent from Virginia. I see no reason to cede the state to any other school, or that VT shouldn't have a goal to win the state AND the region. I mean, someone has to get the top talent in Virginia. Why shouldn't it be VT?

Some people do form loyalties to states.

I live in Florida, but I still love Virginia and Virginia Tech. For some, it's not JUST proximity.

That said, some people don't care so much about those things.

I don't care where Fuente gets his recruits, but I do consider all of Virginia to be VT territory, and I'll be surprised when Virginia isn't the state with the most participants in Virginia Tech athletics.

For sure. Just saying it's not unprecedented. You had to be impressed with his enthusiasm during the Military Bowl. Basically Dabo is an energy guy who spends wisely on coaches. Shane could be the same thing.

What do these names have in common? They were all from outside of Virginia, all played for Frank Beamer, and all were NFL draft picks. From the building blocks of Beamer's early success through around 2003, the Hokies top players were consistently kids from outside of Virginia. If you look closely from the start of the Beamer era through 2003, out of state kids were drafted into the NFL far more often than in-state kids.
