The state of Ohio is under recruited imo. Not saying we would land 5 star rated kids but there are linemen and tight end type athletes that would rival what we would have a shot at in VA.

Washington State had a 15 point lead with 3 minutes left in the game and Colorado State won by 3.

And the first recruit Fuente visited was a plane flight away. An increased recruiting budget has changed things as well. But yeah Fuente has focus on in-state relationships & he still gets to keep his others.
I think we all agree, we want the best guys in our state that fit , but VT wants to recruit as a REGIONAL power, not just a state power. And that can lead to national..... Things.

My issue is being too far away from anything, living here for 7 years without having an interesting conversation about hockey or football, and having people look at me like I was from planet Voltron whenever I talked about fishing or home cooked meals.
we are missing the players like the Vick's, Tyrod, Adibi's, Tapp, Ellis, D. and V. Hall, J. Williams, Rouse, Chancellor, and I'm sure its a few others. These were our best players during our best years. All of these players basically only played 4 positions, DE, LB, DB and QB. We are really lacking pass rushers and linebackers on the roster right now. There have been players at these positions in Va, particularly the 757 in the last few years that we are not getting. Now if any Vick or Taylor's are in the state it is imperative that we get players with that ability, especially at the QB position. We have been lucky there and there havent been any in the last few years we've missed.
DB we have done fine with recruiting wise. And to have a full roster you have to go out of state. But we have some of the best players at positions of need in this state that we have to snag up to be great. Its just that simple
Right. State lines really don't mean anything except to the media. We need to recruit our hotspots in the mid-Atlantic (many of which are in VA), but continue to develop our ties in FL and elsewhere.
The kids from Florida we've landed are basically #HokiesInTheNFL list.
Then add in the kids from GA and the current success in NC, it's more about focusing on a radius, and then certain "pockets" & pipelines.
Fuente clearly has plans on recruiting the Deep South (Wiggins) and the mid-west / Texas guys (himself). There's no need to throw away old connections to build his new ones in-state.
No way the 10 win streak would have continued as long as it did without Tyrod playing in every season he did.

Yeah that's rough. I've heard they offered three-year contracts to other targets that turned them down so Gilbert knows the cards. May be able to negotiate a a longer or back-heavy contract / big buyout.

When was he going to get meaningful minutes? And for what purpose? Are you certain VT beats Purdue or NC State with Lawson or Durkin? Because press clippings and recruiticorn hype aside, I didn't see anything that would lead me to believe it.
It's college football. Players only have 4 years of eligibility and move on. 50% of teams are starting a new QB each year...and many of those are guys will have had little or no game experience. It's just the nature of the beast. Unless you have nowhere to go but up or have no other alternatives, you can't give meaningful time to someone (particularly to a QB) who doesn't yet deserve it so that it might pan out for the better in a year or two.
If the coaches felt Lawson wasn't ready, the players aren't stupid -- they almost certainly felt it too. And playing him substantive minutes would have sent a terrible message to the rest of the team. This team didn't give up -- and that's in no small part because the coaches didn't give up on them.
