There's a big difference between recruiting Virginia kids as the Head Coach at UVA and recruiting Virginia kids as a position coach at Maryland. Then add in that his reputation was built largely on 2 or 3 elite kids over a 5 yr period funneled his way via a now fractured relationship.

I'm not saying he'll be a non-factor, but I don't think he'll be much of a factor.

Not worried... Now if chip west followed London I'd start to get worried.

West was londons ace recruiter.

If I gambled, I think I would consider taking Tulsa with that kind of spread considering all of the changes and emotion occurring this December. But, there is also a chance that the team rallies behind Beamer's last game and thumps them good. Of course, that's why I don't gamble.

Some more love for Whit, this time on BR.

Virginia Tech

Out: Frank Beamer

In: Justin Fuente

Grade: A+

The skinny: This, folks, is how you do a coaching search. AD Whit Babcock didn't have to make the difficult choice regarding Frank Beamer's future because the legendary coach knew when to make it. That made things easy in creating the opening, but Babcock absolutely nailed things every step of the way in first identifying the perfect candidate and then sealing the deal with Fuente.

Just as importantly, his swift moves allowed Fuente to retain renowned defensive coordinator Bud Foster. Yes, it's pretty easy to figure out who won the coaching search silly season.

I always sort by avg stars. To me, it's a better indicator than the rankings which IMO disproportionately reward elite recruits and, more importantly, the number of recruits overall.

By average stars, London didn't look quite as potent as a recruiter.

Of course you can. But I live in the midwest and can't find Devil's Backbone or Starr Hill here. I always load up on a few cases when I come home. Likewise when I go to Denver for work, I usually pick up some Wynkoop and Great Divide, because I likewise can't get those in Illinois. Craft beer is still very much regional.

There's no reason to expect it to end any time soon. They're mostly (all?) converts from FCS that have invested more into their programs. The financial incentives over the long haul (talking decades) are just great.

I've never heard of Logic (the signer that is), but then I've also never really been a fan of rap. But I followed the link to see his performance. While I was not impressed, I don't see this as a negative for VT. The rapper was not offensive or vulgar, and having the school's name displayed on national TV in the background of his performance gets it out there in the mainstream even more.

So, while not a fan of the performance, and having no feelings either way for the artist, I think it's a positive that the school's name was on that show. Go Hokies!

But but he was only a 3 star out of high school!! He shouldn't be able to do that!!

Technology (for example, online video) has widened the geographic footprint of every school. Now you can easily get on your computer and see a guy play from across the country. This widening also includes VA. The top talent in every state isn't a secret (or even on the DL) from every school outside of the state. This is great for the blue bloods, but tougher for anyone trying to break into that distinguished club.

Don't get me wrong, basic recruiting principles still apply: building relationships, good coaching, successful results, putting people into the NFL, etc. The only difference is (to me), where we used to have a leg up in knowing how talented some of the kids in VA are, technology has given that visibility to the rest of the country.

They didn't just lazily keep him as a 5 star. They thought that he was a 5 star.

At this point, if the kids want to buy what he's selling, we probably don't want them at VT.

Maybe he's been doing us a favor by thinning the herd.

I brought tequila back from Mexico this summer after my honeymoon wrapped up in clothes. It was fine. That's all the info I have to offer though.

"He got himself a couple of 5* kids, and then did what with them? Nothing!"

That's not entirely fair. He did get one of them to accomplish this:
