Fuente said he doesn't want to leave his defense high and dry. He's more concerned with controlling the tempo than pushing it. He said that in interviews. In any case, I think his offense will have more success moving the ball than any offense we've had over the last 10 years. I think 3-and-outs by our slow clunky offenses did more damage to Bud's group than any successful up-tempo spread offense would ever do.
Think of it like this; Bud is used to sending his defense out to defend a team after our offense has a quick 3-and-out several times over during a game with the added pressure of having to prevent a score just to keep the game tied and manageable. Now, with the proven ability of Fuente to put points on the board, the worst case scenario is Bud will have to put his unit on the field with the same frequency but more times than not will be protecting a lead as opposed to trying to keep the game within reach.
I'd take the successful up-tempo every day of the week and twice on Saturdays over the slow clunky 3-and-out machines we've grown accustomed to around here.

I'm a graduating senior this year, so in the four years I've been here I've seen a huge change in leadership. The university president, athletic director, head football coach, and head basketball coach have all been changed since I got here in fall 2012. I think all four hires have been amazing for this university. Dr. Sands and Whit really know how to engage the students and the fanbase, and the two head coaching hires have been slam dunks. I think Virginia Tech is in a fantastic position to make huge strides forward both academically and athletically.
Where have you heard this? I only ask because it makes zero sense (to me) to not take VT if they could select Tennessee.
The only people that might be upset would be BMS. The bowl game would sell out in minutes, and I doubt the Belk Bowl has ever done that.

I fully expect the university to address Whit's compensation in the near future. I'd imagine out of necessity.
Sands, Whit, Landsen, Reed-Francois, Morris, KJ, Fuente, Buzz not to mention members of the staff that were previously in place. Pretty remarkable few years in Blacksburg.
Wow, the fact we only had 2 defensive players (by my count, correct me if wrong) speaks volumes to the work Bud did this year. Yeah our defense dipped by our standards but it's still a top 30 defensive unit and he did it with a pretty green group of kids. This list, and more so the absence of a lot of Hokies on the list, just accentuates that.
Well then you should be happy...because it is NOT a word. And I agree....our language is not "evolving" but instead devolving as Americans grow more lazy and uneducated.
Jerry Palm, Mark Schlabach, & Brett McMurphy all have the Belk Bowl taking VT.

Will Bud have to make any dramatic changes to the way he conditions and prepares his defense, assuming of course, Fuente carries over his up-tempo style of offense? If so, what might those be? Naturally, the offense outscoring the opponent, eliminates most worries...

# | Report: Memphis Assistants Holman Wiggins and James Shibest to Join Justin Fuente at Virginia Tech Scott was promoted this year to DC due to Odom leaving. While, if hired at VT, it would technically be a demotion, he probably will have no offers to be a DC this upcoming year (Memphis D dropped significantly after Odom left). So, I don't know if a demotion would be a major factor. If he came to VT, he will probably get paid the same ($220K at Memphis), at a P5 school, under one of the best coaches in the game, and continue to work with Fuente. Not saying it will happen, but I could easily see it happening and may already be in effect (speculation from Cornell Brown tweets).
I don't think there is a better Athletic Director in college athletics right now.
And Dr. Timothy Sands knows it. He said as much himself. We're in great hands! :D
I like this. He talked about recruiting kids that fit the schemes he wants to run, but clearly he's not going to recruit people and try to cram them into his scheme whether it works or not. It hits in my mind the perfect balance between a schizophrenic offense that can't figure it wants to be (what we've had in the past) and a place where they run their thing whether its getting the desired results or not (Georgia Tech and Auburn in certain years come to mind). I like this.
Don't hold your breath. It's here to stay for the foreseeable future.
