A few thoughts:

1. I hope Bud gets a head coaching opportunity at Power 5 school this cycle, whether that's at Virginia Tech or not.

2. I don't think it will be at Virginia Tech.

3. Unless he gets a head coaching opportunity at another Power 5 school, I believe he will be back in Blacksburg next season.

4. If he's not back in Blacksburg next season, and Tech doesn't hire a defensive coordinator who runs a hybrid scheme, the Hokies will be a mess on defense in 2016.

He was hired at Mississippi State in 2009.

Where was all this cash when they cut sports? Where was this cash when they ran from the ACC which they helped form to join the BIG to get more money? You keep talking about all these donors and cash Maryland has yet there spending and financial statements don't bear this out the last 5 years.

Edit: sorry I thought you were referring to Maryland

I wrote that quickly and didn't elaborate. The payout was my meaning (I'm not even sure there is one in bud's contract though). My point is that if you are interviewing coaches and a particular coach says he wants to bring in his own defensive staff but that is going to cost you a top 5 coordinator and a lot of money, it's not out of the question to politely tell the said coach that the negotiations are over.

Funny RichRod story...so were a big Hokie family, and my cousin brought her new boyfriend to thanksgiving, of course were all talking coaching rumors, and he goes "Well, I hope the Rich Rod rumors arent true" and Im like, I knew I liked this guy, and then he goes..."Id be devistated, Arizona is finally getting good, we need him to stay"....and I was like.....

apparently the kids from Arizona originally and went there, and he LIKES Rich Rod as their coach....I guess I just figured all fans hated him...funny ol world i'n'it.

Touche just seems like most of the time I wrote these bad boys up we had some pretty terrible weather

Both Mullen and his wife are from PA. Prescott graduating this year. It's time for Mullen to get out of dodge. He's looking to get back to the mid Atlantic and get a raise. I'm not sure VT is offering a raise, that might be what the negotiations are about.

Yep, if they wanted to. Donor base is much, much stronger than VTs. Their concerns are how much to commit to football. I expect it could be a lot, they have great fan support across the board in other sports, but those fans have all opted out of football due to a lack of commitment from the administration. This was a similar situation to where they were after Jones -Gillen-Leitao in hoops. So they found an experienced coach, paid him, and the fans came back en force.

I could see them pursuing a Mullen like guy for $4m+ or Pete Lembo for $1.2m. It could go either way, but they got the cash to do whatever they want.

I'm going to be curious if anyone has taken the sword away from the Cavman horse guy.
Maybe give him a star wars light saber toy, or perhaps a harmless foam "We're No #1" finger as a prop or something. They could dust off the ones that got a week's worth of use 25 years ago...
The guys needs to master running with scissors before being promoted to this stunt.

I'd love to be back in VB...that OS vs OL game would be on my menu. Looks to me like Ocean Lakes is going to roll - soooo much senior talent, but plenty in the pipeline from OS for our new head man to pursue.
I'm dreaming about somebody that can come in and recruit Tidewater as well as FSU, painful as that development is. Maybe Jimbo will bolt and our guy can start the ball rolling by flipping Levonta Taylor...

In case everyone missed this, 2017 CB Madison Cone was quoted in a free post on 247 as saying:

"They told me that they are pretty sure that the defensive staff won't be going anywhere," he added.

Which is certainly not binding but good news in my book.

If he came here and did well enough to move on quickly the program would already be in a better place and considering he is probably the top recruiter of all the candidates being mentioned you would think we'd have some good to great talent for the next coach to work with. I agree with you though I think he's looking for a bigger job than VT, but am hopeful he's the guy for us.
