I'm just not a fan of completely changing course when it isn't necessary to. We've been really good at defense for the past 20 years. Even with this down year, we were top 10 in defensive S&P+ the past 3 years before that. It feels like we have the potential to take the defensive tradition and build something offensively, if we hire Bud and let him go spread like he wants. Similar to what TCU decided to do.
But we're probably going to go offense first, knowing there's a solid chance the builder of that defensive tradition will leave. At that point, we'd be pressing the restart button on the program. Which is fine, but it feels like we can add on to something instead of completely rebuilding it.

# | More Chatter About Memphis' Justin Fuente as next Virginia Tech Head Coach Decided to read up a bit on the Memphis boards about this... Apparently there have been some quotes made by their AD in recent weeks that we haven't necessarily been paying attention to that makes it sound all but certain that Fuente is going to be announced as our coach next week. Basically, they've just been waiting to hear where he was headed, because he's been off the market for a while.
That, and there's an amusing vocal minority over there that legitimately think they're a better football program than VT, with far, far more upside.
I would think, that, if there is any truth to this, the Eagles are parting ways with him. Fact - Chip Kelly just closed on a 1.1 million dollar crib near Philly.
If he was thinking about quitting after that, I don't want him as our next head coach cause that's just dumb.
Care to provide some reasoning for this opinion?
Tom Herman seems to be more and more rumored to be staying at Houston. That would be crazy at this point but hey you have to respect that. Wants to be in Texas. Keep building Houston. Join the Big 12. He could turn it into a pretty good job until he's ready to make the 3 hour journey over to Austin.

BUD fits. this is not a company that needs to be torn down from the floor and started over.
This is a company that needs to fire everyone and restart from the CEO all the way down to the janitorial staff.
Do you also have no desire to field competent defenses?
Do you also have no desire to keep good things when you have them?
Do you also have no football knowledge? Never mind, I think I know the answer to that one.
There are few DCs in the country better than Bud, but even an offensive minded coach may have a DC he's more comfortable with.
If Bud and the new HC don't see eye to eye on how to run a program...it may be in everyone's best interest for Bud to move on.

If scenario A happens, I really hope this new coach has a guy with a seriously good track record if he's going to be passing on a mind like Bud Foster's.
B is absolutely fair play though.
I have no desire to keep Bud Foster as part of this coaching staff.
If we hire an offensive minded head coach (and it certainly seems that we will), they should absolutely consider retaining Bud as their DC. There are very few negatives about retaining him as DC.
That being said, it wouldn't shock me if:
A) A new head coach brings along essentially an entire staff who they are more comfortable with.
B) Bud leaves for a higher paying P5 DC or HC job considering all the openings.
In the NFL, you're really only as good as your QB.
Its not a surprise that the Eagles fell off like they did when McNabb started to wear down. It really is a QB driven league, and you're not really a true contender until you have a top tier QB. There's a reason both NE and Carolina are running away with home field this year, they have the 2 guys who have consistently played the best football under center this year.
you referenced your work experience as to why you would be okay if bud moved on. but to me its a classic example of what prevents so many employers from hiring good people.
"experience required" you cannot gain experience without someone giving you an opportunity. with this comes risk. but what doesn't. just because you are a good interviewer doesn't mean youre a good hire and some folks just aren't made for interviews but that doesn't they are not a home run hire. IMO I think bud has shown in his daily duties that he has exceeded expectations and shown to be a master of his craft. If he wishes to expand his role in said company and an opportunity arises he would be my first candidate if he wanted the job. Also just because you do a great job at one company does not mean you are a perfect fit for another. each company has different guidelines and procedures and over all persona that just may not fin in with the next man/womans style. BUD fits. this is not a company that needs to be torn down from the floor and started over. Im 100% in on bud being on this staff until he retires no matter what it takes. and im on the side that bud should be the next HC. Hes earned it. just my opinion and each is entitled to his/her own.

Bud is one of the best DCs in football, period. Maybe (probably) we go in another direction for our head coaching hire, but I think it'd be really dumb to not at least try to keep Bud around to do what he's been kicking ass at for the past couple decades.
Sure, he may want to move on and progress his career. Doesn't mean I'm ludicrous for thinking it'd be ridiculous to not try to keep him.
You cannot compare college and NFL. In college, where rosters are completely refreshed every 4 years, you can transition relatively quickly from a program that focuses on defense to one that focuses on offense. Many have done it. In the NFL, where contracts are long, its very difficult to do that migration in a short time period.
evaluation frameworks have come along way... HC experience is a nice to have, but in no way a knockout factor
gotta have a framework to hire and evaluate... but at the end of the day "gut" says alot about who gets this spot
I think you also have to keep in mind Whit's perspective.... to me this university experience has probably been one where if he had to sum it up in two words: "jesus christ"
I think the power, flows, and accountability within the highest levels of the university to the AD and the various coaches were waaaaaaay too entrenched and informal. Various coaching hires had been absolutely run in the most unimaginably poor manner one could think of. We didn't do much modern management at all. I have to imagine that when Whit is sitting whereever he sits to think. He wants change and and upgrade to many if not all aspects of the program. Does he want to upgrade the D? Probably the sole thing he wants to keep.
But when he looks at Bud, I think he sees a guy who doesn't realize how f'd up things were and probably still are in many aspects of the program.
This is a good point... Let's not forget how Weaver LITERALLY walked down the hallway and offered an assistant men's basketball coach a women's head coaching job instead of interviewing ANY other candidates.
While I don't agree with the idea that we need change for the sake of change, I do believe Whit wants to send a firm, clear message to all members of the Athletic Department that this type of behavior is behind us.
