Its time to move on, seriously.
We haven't recruited well as a team recently, period.
That said, talent can cover up failed execution (sometimes) but when your defense is based around excellent scheme, having people that are up to speed schematically and execute properly and consistently, you will see better defensive numbers and consistent performances. So with a complex defensive scheme, having players who know how to execute/line up correctly is extremely important and I think that the wealth of youth is the biggest issue with our defense this year.
I am not sure why there is so much angst about this. Sure, he is a phenomenal pro and would have been an upgrade over our shooting guard, but most of the country missed on him. The other piece of this is that even when he was in college, other than a couple strong showings in the tournament, he was essentially an afterthought of most programs. Why?
Look at the opponents he was having to go up against while playing in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State, North Carolina Greensboro, Western Carolina, Chattanooga, Elon, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Furman, Georgia Southern, and Wofford. Soak those names in for a second. Real high profile programs. Programs that every D1 school usually pays big bucks to come in during the OOC schedule to lose by 20 or so points.
Its now apparent that the talent was there and his body just had to catch up to it as he is a phenomenal pro, but he spent three years in college getting there. If he had been a surefire superstar coming out of high school, all the top teams in the country would have been on him and he would have spent one year in school before jumping to the pros. Enjoy watching him play the game now and realize that maybe if something had been done differently he might not be who he is today.
Our LB core is not very good and its not looking to get significantly better with the incoming class.
I actually think we might be in for a few defensive down years, even if Bud remains DC. Our recruiting misses on that side of the ball are catching up quickly.
Meh, I could live with him coaching at Syracuse or NCst or really any team in the Atlantic division other than BC
I share your logic re: Bud Foster 100%.
This may be true but I think a lot of it comes directly back to recruiting. I'm not on the "Bud doesn't/refuses to recruit" bandwagon but to say he underachieves in that department is an understatement.
I'll send a leg your way and we'll call it even haha
That has a lot to do with him being forced to play young guys who aren't completely ready, which leads to execution errors. Secondly, those young guys have forced him to be more vanilla with his defenses in some games. In other words, he hasn't been able to always use the schemes/formations/alignments that he would prefer this year.

The Spanish word "uva" means "grape." Grapes make wine. Let that sink in for a moment.
Thomas Jefferson used to observe construction on the grounds CAMPUS DAMMIT from atop the Rotunda. If he were alive to witness the haphazard invocations of his name by the pompous Hoos, he would throw himself off of the damn building.
There were more popped collars in the Comparative Medieval and Romantic Wine Tasting and Associated Literature Topics than at the UVA spring game.
Double joke: that class doesn't freaking exist. You see what I did there.
Triple joke: you thought it was plausible that UVA would have such a class.
Quadruple joke: some stupid Hoo is now petitioning some irrelevant department to create that class.
A UNC graduate claims to have gotten an A in that class. OH WAIT WRONG WEEK.
Voldemort went to UVA.
How many UVA students does it take to change a light bulb? None, because Thomas Jefferson did all his work by candlelight and THUS SO SHALL THEY.
UVA students wish sporting uniforms would be designed by Vineyard Vines.
UVA beat Notre Dame in football AHAHAHA NO THEY DIDN'T.
Well, at least UVA basketball beat GW AHAHAHA NO THEY DIDN'T.
The UVA football team's favorite snack? Soft-serve ice cream.
Mike London walks into the AD's office after the season, having been defeated by VT yet again.
The AD tells him, "Mike, I'm sorry to say that you're fir-"
"TIMEOUT"
"Mike, you can't call timeout now-"
"TIMEOUT"
"Mike, you're embarrassing yourse-"
"TIMEOUT"
"Mike, what the hell are you doing?"
"I saved all my timeouts for when they really matter!"
I think the point is that most of us WOULD be willing to keep him. As DC.
As HC, he is completely unproven.
Like I've said in many posts on this forum, Whit needs to compare all the candidates using all of his criteria. I think he should look at the candidates objectively.
There are also other potential candidates who are unproven as HC. They all need to be looked at from an overall perspective of what you're trying to achieve. Whit needs to look at proven HC skills, as well as what he judges as HC potential. I think it's also fair to consider their ability to attract other staff, such as OC and DC, as well as appeal to recruits.
My issue is with those that are saying "Bud Foster deserves to be the next head coach".
That is entirely false. Bud Foster doesn't deserve to be the head coach anymore than Frank Beamer deserved to "stay for as long as he wanted" or whatever other nonsense people have been babbling over the last few years.
Whit needed to make several decisions:
1) Is Frank Beamer the best head coach that Virginia Tech can reasonably employ for this season and for the future?
Once the determination was made that retaining Frank would ultimately not be as beneficial as (presumably) asking him to retire, Whit needed to do so. Such decisions, while ultimately extremely difficult, cannot be made based on Frank's past performance, what he has meant to the community, how he built the program etc. Look at how Kobe Bryant's current performance/salary is damaging the Lakers. That was an atrocious decision to extend him for that amount of money. The decision had to a forward looking one.
2) Who is the next best head coach for Virginia Tech?
Bud Foster deserves consideration, that's for sure. His loyalty to the program can certainly be in the + category of whatever +/- analysis Whit is using to analyze his candidates...but if Whit determines that Bud is not the best person to lead this program going forward both in the short term and long term, he should not be hired.
I don't mean to get off track, and I mean the above with ALL due respect to both men. There are no two men on the planet who could have done a better job building a program and being an ambassadors for Virginia Tech. However, these decisions must be made outside the emotional cocoon that many fans live in. The reality is: this is a business, and a massive moneymaker for the school. If Whit goes around giving jobs to guys based on a lot of the criteria that many fans have used to argue that Bud is the only person who have the job we'd have a serious problem.
I will cry big man tears if Bud Foster is not coaching the Hokies in some capacity next year.

I'd root for him as long as it's not an ACC school, Maryland, or the team opposing VT.

Where is Bud going to get an OC?
I think the common view is that Whit needs to hire a Head Coach, and that Head Coach selects his staff.
- If Bud is that head coach, then he selects his staff.
- If Bud is not that head coach, then the head coach can consider hiring Bud (who has the qualifications to be a DC here, but must be able to work with the new head coach).
- If the new head coach does not want to work with Bud, that's ok too. Bud has the resume to be a least a coordinator at any university.
This could wind up being a great opportunity for Bud to grow as a coach. Regardless of what happens, I wish Bud the best. If he winds up on a team that is not VT, I will still root for him every weekend (unless that team is UVA or Miami).
I don't think it's ludicrous to consider him. I do think that you can easily make an argument that he's not necessarily the best candidate.
That defense for a majority of this year has been far from NC caliber
Thank you for so eloquently stating exactly how I feel in such a way I could not come up with myself. I think it's in Bud's best interest to pursue other opportunities. I am in no way saying that he isn't good enough.
My point of view here is that moving from DC to HC is a change AND, when you have one of the best defenses in the country, why dump that because your offense needs work?
We already know that Bud is a great coach.
Why not move him to HC, reset the offense again with his guys and go for it?
I don't see that as ludicrous at all.
I see doing things that would send Bud packing, throwing the baby out with the bathwater. We already have half a NC caliber team. Keep that part.
No, that's RICHARD Campbell. Everybody knows bass players can't coach D1 ball.
I mean GLENN Campbell. He's not coaching either.

This is exactly what needed to be said. The most important thing here is the success of Hokie football going forward. There is no "earning" the job based on what has been accomplished in the past without an eye towards continued success in the future.
Additionally, I disagree with the notion that any performance as a coordinator in anyway constitutes "earning" a head coaching spot. They are entirely different jobs with very different demands and amounts of responsibility. Success as a coordinator does not necessarily point toward success as a head coach. It can, but it doesn't always.
