FWIW - I totally agree with you. I hope my thoughts aren't misconstrued that I want Bud Foster to leave VT. I just acknowledge the possibility of him parting ways with VT might be for the best ... especially if he's not chosen to be the head coach, a choice I would not be unhappy with.

Personally, I just love to watch him play. It would have been nice to see him in orange and maroon, but he's from a Hokie family, from Charlotte (my hometown) and he's one of the most exciting players in the world to see. I don't lament what could of been, and just enjoy him for what he is.

Bud Foster as Head Coach doesn't necessarily fit Virginia Tech's best course of action going forward.

If we don't hire Bud as our head coach, and the incoming head coach doesn't retain him, I will feel no ill will to either party.
I will as well. If it works out well.
I still think Bud is the Best Choice for VT HC. Best. Choice, NOT automatically deserving.

If Whit is handicapping the incoming coach to keep Bud that is a big big mistake.
If Whit is suggesting he keeps Bud that is a good idea.
If new HC doesn't want Bud I would question him and hope he hires someone with P5 experience at DC.
If new HC wants to keep Bud and Bud stays that's even better.
If new HC wants to keep Bud and Bud doesn't want to stay I wouldn't blame him

and I think that by not offering him the HC position it guarantees he goes somewhere else, he does not stay here.
An FSU opening could steal one of our targets. Hermann might not be a long term fit at FSU... but I could see him taking that spot. If he stays at Houston til his dream job opens... that means someone else on the pecking order will fill the FSU slot.
I don't know that the FSU opening is for everyone. There is a taint about the school, the town, the whole way of living. Hopefully some of our targets don't want their babies to grow up in such an environment.
They also included the Hokie stone helmets which were more liked than disliked and the Fighting Gobbler helmets which are some of the best liked helmets. They also gloss over the fact that they have had garbage helmets this year, being the chromed multi color mess helmet and the orange helmet with a V bumper sticker on it.
I'm not saying deserved through some sence of entitlement.
I'm saying he's proved himself an outstanding coach and one of the best DCs. The next step is a HC shot. Can't think of a better place than VT for that.

I'm amused that people -- maybe even Whit -- think that a 1 or 2 years of head coaching experience at a mid-major really means that much.
There is absolutely no magic recipe for hiring a head coach. The backgrounds and resumes of successful coaches is all over the board. As it also is with unsuccessful coaches. And the vast majority of head coach hires are generally seen in retrospect as disappointing -- regardless of pedigree and resume.
So, IMO, while there may be reasons Bud Foster isn't the right guy for the job, the fact he hasn't been a head coach before is an excuse, not a reason.

Sounds like the Miami administration is wanting to return to the small academic rich private school model, meaning Miami's spot will hopefully be evaluated lower than ours.
Some folks really like warm weather. Miami has great food. I don' t care for the place very much... but I could see a coach liking it there.
You being willing to keep him as DC means that since you don't want him as HC, you are sealing the deal that he is leaving.
Why are you afraid to give Bud a shot at HC? Like I said, he's not a novice and proven himself as a good coach, one of the best.

This is exactly what needed to be said. The most important thing here is the success of Hokie football going forward. There is no "earning" the job based on what has been accomplished in the past without an eye towards continued success in the future.
Additionally, I disagree with the notion that any performance as a coordinator in anyway constitutes "earning" a head coaching spot. They are entirely different jobs with very different demands and amounts of responsibility. Success as a coordinator does not necessarily point toward success as a head coach. It can, but it doesn't always.
Its time to move on, seriously.

# | Failure to Execute the Basics Hampers Hokies' Offense Against Tar Heels 
We haven't recruited well as a team recently, period.
That said, talent can cover up failed execution (sometimes) but when your defense is based around excellent scheme, having people that are up to speed schematically and execute properly and consistently, you will see better defensive numbers and consistent performances. So with a complex defensive scheme, having players who know how to execute/line up correctly is extremely important and I think that the wealth of youth is the biggest issue with our defense this year.
