I think if we bring in an Offensive Minded HC who also happens to be somewhat of a QB whisperer that will lead to exciting eye-popping numbers which will garner more of an audience and lead to the biggest up-tick in recruiting that is possible. Putting up 40 points per game is going to do more for recruiting than anything else. Hiring an offensive minded HC is the only way I really see that happening.
Offense first, then recruit to the defense to build that unit up. Build and build and become a contender.
Yes and No, JJ had both Hudson and Bibbs committed to Tech before he was fired. Buzz convinced both to stay on as part of the recruiting class considering how late in recruiting Buzz was able to start work.

Understandable. I grew up between Philly and NYC so the "fans that love to hate" are a familiarity to me. I like to stay up in Touchdown Terrace mostly because it's so relaxed. :)

THIS seems to be the magic mix.
A top 5 defense is awesome. If nobody can score on you, that's a huge plus, but people can score against a top 20 defense, so you'll be need a high-power offense to go along with it if you don't have something that's completely "lock-down".
Mobile QB with a solid passing game? I'd take it. :)

Excellent points. It's also worth noting that NO ONE wanted Paxton Lynch. He took him and made him into a stud.
Now that... THAT.... that is a good last name for a football players. I will thoroughly enjoy yelling "KU-MAAH" for the next few years.
Could we just put NC A&T players in Iowa State jerseys and play the game that way? That would be fun.
And it wouldn't hurt if VT's student population grew by 30-50%...that equals more $$ down the road.

When I think of a "Buzz Hire," I don't necessarily think of a guy that simply comes out of nowhere, and I seriously doubt Whit looks at message boards just to make a list of guys he can't get because they're too mainstream. To me, a "Buzz Hire" means everyone is talking about a small group of coaches, then Whit announces his choice and everyone's reaction is, "... oh yeah, that's much better. Let's do that." So Mullen would be the ultimate Buzz Hire IMO, since while his name has been floated, he's also been largely written off - too expensive, why would he leave the SEC?, reportedly has said no to Whit before, etc. More importantly, I think he'd be a slam dunk of a hire, one that the vast majority of the fan base would be very, very happy about.
All that said, the last lines of your comment sum this situation up perfectly. Whit could give a sh!t (new t-shirt slogan at some point?) who people are talking about or not, he just wants to go get the best football coach he can.
Interesting, I thought Hudson was part of Buzz's own guys that he had helped recruit. He showed so much potential at times last year.
I understand how you can see it that way but we have never won ACC championships in basketball. Johnson didn't have the tenure or the track record of any type of success. I agree THAT decision was poor.
I think it's funny how now that Fuente is getting a lot of steam towards being the new head Hokie, that some people are now questioning how well he can do. Thinking that he will be a pass only QB who needs the perfect QB to run his system. Remember, he's at Memphis, not Alabama. It's not like he has recruits beating his dot down to play at Memphis. Coaches have a lot to do with recruiting but the brand and school do as well. That's why you have 4 and 5 star recruits not going to VT where they could make an immediate impact and most likely start for 3/4 years and instead go to places like Alabama and play backup for 2 years.
Fuente will do fine with recruiting and offense IMO at vt. He has a strong stable of running backs if/when he gets here. Needs a receiver or two but the top two are good. Has good TEs. Has what may be the next coming of MV7 as a sophomore QB. If bud is retained he has one of the best DCs handling the defense. Honestly I don't know what HC wouldn't want to have that type of DC coming in. The only way I don't think bud is retained is if Bud doesn't want to be the DC for Tech under a new coach.
From what I understand, Miami's facilities are nowhere near other P5 level schools and Chip is coming from Oregon that has truckloads of $ funneled into that program from Phil Knight (Nike). I don't see any scenario where Chip Kelly winds up there. Just my $.02
You're all assuming that Bud is going to be able to bring in a stud OC. I'm not so sure about that, TBH. I think our chances at drastically improving our offense are much greater if we hire a HC who is a proven offensive mind as opposed to hiring a DC and hoping he can find an OC who will turn this offense around.
The trouble with stud OCs is that once they're a known quantity they're not going to be looking for other OC jobs. They'll be looking for HC jobs. If Bud is hired he'll have to take a chance on an OC who is unproven and hoping he turns out to be a rockstar. Is that a risk you're willing to take with a defensive guru who has 0 years of HC experience?
Me personally; I'd much rather a guy who is a known offensive mind and has some HC experience. In my mind, he's much more likely to find a competent DC to pair with his offense than Bud is to find a competent OC to pair with his defense.
And before you make the argument "What kind of OC wouldn't want to come into a situation where Bud is the DC backing them up?..A good OC would be crazy NOT to want to work with Bud."
Well, I'll pose this counter point to that argument. 1. Why couldn't we snag that top flight OC 4 years ago when we made changes? 2. Why would a stud OC want to work for a HC who has no HC experience. He would be coming into a situation that is completely unknown. Being a DC/OC is much different than being HC. Just because you're good at DC/OC doesn't mean you're going to be good at HC. I think that is why HC experience is so important to Whit. If I were a stud OC I'd rather work for a guy with HC experience and a defense that is in the 20-50 range than a new HC with no experience who has produced top 10 defenses as a DC in his past. Much fewer question marks with the guy who has been around the block. And, if I'm a stud, I don't need a top 10 defense to back up my high flying offense.

Other than wishful thinking and a magic wand, what makes you think a new coach and staff would be able to get any -- let alone a bunch -- of those guys to Blacksburg? And which guys wouldn't have come here if the current coaching staff wasn't here? Let's say VT gets 2 or 3 of them but doesn't get the Fullers...how much better off is VT?
I strongly suspect you're going to have no problem coming up with a similar list of woulda, coulda, shoulda recruits 5 years from now.
I thought this had been addressed a while back when there was a perceived "coach-in-waiting" status with Bud and he came out and said he didn't want the position.
Man I was excited to read their comments over on their site but I just checked and right now there's only one. I guess they frequent their fan site about as much as they frequent their stadium.

If he goes Illinois or UMD, he'll never make the playoffs unless he wins the Big 10 outright. I don't see it happening, which is why UMD won't be offering.
UMD is like VT, in that they sort of need a "splash" hire.
