I think Frank will be and wants to be remembered for the culture he developed rather than the wins he totaled. No better way to do that than make fans/players read his comments every day before they enter the stadium.

I think that VT has their coach locked up already, and it's either Herman, Morris or Fuente (rumors I hear say Morris but who the hell knows).
The whole coaching search this season is a game. Agents are floating names to gauge interest and leverage salary negotiations. Donors enjoy the game because they feel 'in the know' and think their opinion matters (which is the case for 1% of them). The good AD's have it figured out, the bad ones will not.
I think our best chance is to lock up a new coach as early as possible, and start 'damage control' - assemble/finalize a staff and re-recruit current players and recruits. The sooner we have our team and staff finalized, the sooner we can start making changes. If Morris/Herman/Fuente/Bud/Whoever right the ship quickly and swiftly, start recruiting correctly and start developing players, we will be able to go toe-to-toe with Miami, just like we did when we were in the Big East.
I don't mind the "lack of zombie kills" since its only been one day in the story timeline.

The Northwestern game in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge seems more the legitimate test to me. Its a game with a much smaller difference in talent level and should tell us alot about where we are as a team by then.

My point is you didn't address the question to which you were responding at all. You did answer your own question, though. So there is that. And to be fair, I get what you're saying and I don't disagree with it. These days there is so much focus on scoring points and winning games with style points. It's important to have a potent offense in Blacksburg moving forward if we want to get to the next level. I agree with that sentiment. We still need to have a defense though. Everyone laughs at the Big XII in general because that whole league is "defense optional" and I don't think we really want that here. Offense wins games. Defense wins championships. We need to be able to score points, for sure, but we also need to be able to stop the other guys from scoring too. It sounds really silly because it's so simple but it's something that most of the Big XII just ignores. It's probably why that conference will never have a true Championship contender.

Miami doesn't have to, as their name sells itself, especially in that region. In fact, part of their selling point is that they don't have to do so, as they put all those players in the NFL by basing it on nothing more than allowing them to be themselves on the field.

I think Morris could be the Dabo Swinney type closer that the defense needs to lock down some recruits. A few key commitments at DE, LB could have Bud's defense back firing on all cylinders. Plus other teams can't use the uncertainty of a Beamer retirement as negative recruiting.
Yeah, it's actually a pretty touching story. In WW2, ND didn't have enough students to stay open and was contemplating shutting down the college. Navy sent midshipmen to train at ND to keep their doors open. Here is the wiki on it:

If that was the case, wouldn't Rick been gone a few seasons ago with the Governor.
So if there is mutual interest between Kelly and Miami, and this doomsday situation for VT could happen, could we realistically make a run at Chip Kelly? I would think he would be a top ideal coaching candidate, and it would be prudent to do everything we can to keep him from going to Miami. Either that, or we would have to counter with an equally home run-caliber hire.
Shoot if they want that Wing T offense on their schedule, there is a team in Georgia that chops more then a salad shooter.

The only way ND joins is if they beat Stanford and are still snubbed. In a year when the PAC 12, and potentially big 12 are both going to be eliminated from the playoffs, if they can't make it in they never will. Then ND will have to seriously think about joining the ACC to have that crucial 13th game.
Then the ACC would just have to poach Navy from the BigLeast(AAC) to take it to 16. Or kick out Louisville.
