Excellent points! People forget that the first job of a coach is teacher. The success of the heir says a lot about the coach. Morris was an innovator and embraces change, combine that with his natural teaching abilities and he could do very well for us.

I'm a huge fan of the offense he implemented at Clemson. It's a run based, physical, spread offense that can change tempo and still has big play potential. Their receivers always block like champs and I love it.

Something that doesn't get mentioned - when he left, his two assistants/position coaches under him assumed offensive coordinator responsibilities, and led the offense without missing a beat - this tells me that he knows how to train a staff. He brought his GA's from Clemson to SMU with him, and has continued to teach them his system.

Last year, SMU won 0 games. Three games were one score games, seven games were by more than 30 points. This year, SMU has won 2 games, and only two 30+ point loss (against undefeated Navy, and highly ranked healthy Baylor). I know that's not exactly fantastic, but the improvement really is dramatic. I have no doubt that if Morris stays there a few more years, they will compete with/beat Houston and some of the P5 Texas teams.

Finally, (and this is short sited, I know) I think his offense fits the players we have right now. I really see McMillan, Ford, and especially Lawson flourishing in his system (not that they wouldn't in Herman's).

EDIT: also want to add (for comparison) that last year's Houston Team was 8-5, and all but one loss was a one-score game. It's beyond unfair to expect Morris's results to be similar to Herman's.

If Morris comes in, it would make it real easy for Brewer to stick around as a Graduate Assistant to help with the QB's and get his coaching career started.

Pun was intended. Like when I yelled at the defense to "Kick the TAR out of them".

He would have had it if the DB hadn't stiff-armed him in the back. That play happened right where I had an excellent view of it and the DB gave an obvious push off.

If only we wore green, he could be the Jolly Green Giant

The team playing better, and what scares me is for the first time in a long time, I'm not sure who that's going to be. I hope it will be us (I'll be yelling for sure).

Herman is from an established coaching tree. He has coached on a national championship team, and after leaving that team, he had success elsewhere. Morris's resume just isn't as pretty, but I think he would be a great hire.

Plus VT is one of the best jobs available so why wouldn't Herman look here. What other school is he waiting for that is a better job than Tech??

All depends on who USC and LSU firing/hiring. If LSU hires Jimbo or Strong or someone like that, then FSU or Texas become available, and then dominoes start to fall.

Getting a bit off topic, but this could be the year that a legitimate P5 head coaching position opens up for Bud Foster. The type where he can win. If he doesn't get the HC gig here, he might one elsewhere.

meh, UNC just beat Duke twice, that's all...

Who do you think is going to come into the game saturday more fired up: the team that beat duke in a hangover game or the team that lost in OT on a bad call to the number one team in the division?

Shit, if he leaves, do I have a second favorite team?

am I the only one who giggles a little every time people talk about having UNC on their heels?

UVA beats Duke
Our offense looks like crap

I'm scared for this week.....

My biggest issue with McMillion coming back in was that he had sat the whole 4th quarter (or close to it) and was coming back into the game cold. If he had been in and out and was still warm and loose, then no problem. But our offense was working, mixing in the run and pass, with the personnel group that we had in the game for most of the fourth. Why go away from that when we had the defense on their heels?

mcmillion wasn't in during the 4th because we were playing from behind and sam was in for pass protection. the run game was non existent during that period because we pretty much had to throw to win. once OT started you kinda settle down and go back with what worked for much of the game. mcmillion running the rock. I know lots of ppl aren't happy with the OT play calling but I am not one of them. mccmillion was pretty successful running the football all day. im glad we went back to the run game in OT. yeah it didn't work but if we would have came out and chucked 3 incompletions we all would have wondered why mcmillion wasn't in. I was actual not happy about mcmillion sitting the whole 4th and sam getting so many carries, sams a great player gives his all. but he only gets what is there to be taken. he isn't going to make something out of nothing. the same complaint we have about our other RBs the only difference is he does it with so much heart and effort we appreciate it much more.

fwiw I hate noon kickoffs too, lol. get off work Friday at 5, pick up the kid from school run home and grab everything I forgot to pack in the am and then on the road for a 9 hour haul. stopped in charlotte around 1am got about hours of sleep and then on the road at 8 to get into Blacksburg around 10 by the time we set up to tailgate we are taking it back down and headed to the stadium. I want to go out on a limb and say most of the people attending games are not with in a 2 hour drive of the stadium so your really not heading out the door any later than 8am. here in Jacksonville that's what time we get to the tailgate for 1pm kickoffs. maybe that's because the jags are so bad that you need extra time to drink away your sorrows.

yeah definitely. I've already decided that the new coach is going to be somebody nobody is talking about. I really want it to be Tom Herman (and the homer in me still believes there is a better than good chance we get him) but I'm going to have to get used to the fact we probably aren't going to snag him. I'm just going to have faith in Whit and hope the next guy is good, no matter who it is. I'll still show up and support the team no matter what. That's all that matters anyway.

Go Hokies!
