Upvote for having pretty much the same take.
One difference was slow-playing the the option; I didn't like seeing Cardell the Giant running for 10yds a carry, but at least Zeke didn't go for 200. I think Foster picked the lesser of the two evils in the option game.
Anybody notice the coin flip, where our Captains probably averaged 180 lbs, and their Captains looked about 280? And that may have included their QB.
If there was any doubt why the line was double-digits, the coin flip should have clarified it.
Boise wasn't going to win a national championship.
And much of their huge success was due to playing a weak schedule. Not only could they pile up the wins, but they didn't take the physical beating that other teams take. Teams like UNC and UVa may be beatable, but they are far more physically demanding on a week in, week out basis than the teams Boise was playing. If Boise had played an ACC or Big 10 schedule during those years, they would have lost 2 or 3 games every year and wouldn't have even had the chance to play in some of those BCS games.
TCU was the same. They lost just 8 games in the 6 seasons before going to the big 12 and then went 7-5 and 4-8 in their first 2 seasons in the big 12 when they had to play bigger, stronger, faster teams every week instead of 1 or 2 times a year with an off week before and after. They had a great season last year and are expected to be good this year (they were less than overwhelming vs a solid Minn team in week 1), but the minute Texas and Oklahoma get their sea legs again, they'll be an 8 win program.
Well, football is no VT Women's Soccer, that's for sure.

From the south end zone, it seemed like he threw it as poorly as possible while still getting a completion. He could have led the receiver away from the defence but he led him right back to the DB.
It seemed some of the offense was just as surprised at Nijman as French was. Brewer rushed the check-down when Nijman was expected to pick up the blitz, Coleman ran AWAY from the pulling FB for no good reason when the play was designed for Nijman's hole. At least two examples of teammates expecting bad play from the new tackle.
I was more disappointed in Hanson whiffing on one of the first plays of the game for a sack. That made me think "same ol' O Line". As the game went on the running lanes were good and the ground game finally had some bite. I think were in for a strong running game if the backs know what play were running.
Anyone seen any other Hokies get added?
Except perhaps Mike this year (and let's see how AM does this year against a team with normal speed and weapons before writing him off entirely), the linebacking corps have been quite solid for VT over the last 6 years. Yes there have been misses and injuries (as there is for every team) but Jack Tyler, Bruce Taylor, Cody Grimm, Chase Williams, Tariq Edwards, Deon Clarke have been pretty good college LBs.
Incomplete right now. Haven't seen enough to warrant a top 25 ranking, but Ohio State just makes teams look bad. I like our chances in the ACC IF:
-Motley is better than a simply serviceable backup
-The stable of running backs absolutely catches fire until Brewer comes back and beyond
-The defense regroups and goes to what we were predicted to be
-Bucky Hodges and Cam Phillips make major contributions, as well as Ford and Malleck keeping pace with what they did
-Special teams continues to be solid
Remember, coach always says we make the biggest improvements between week one and later that same week.

Way back when, when we used to score, a lot, this was never a problem for Bud's D. Has Bud's D changed that much since the peak of Hokie football?
Either way, this is a depressing discussion. Gone are the days of the talk of filling the trophy case, that has sense been moved. We can't even crack the top 25 any more. And the lack of depth isn't just a problem on offense. We're paper thin on defense as well, with exception of DT.
People have criticized my negativeness, but we're one game into the season and we are already thinking "oh shit". What's going to pop up within the next 6 weeks?
I don't see Teller going early with protection busts like French described.

I agree with premise that VT could contend for a playoff spot on occasion. Like say once or twice every 15 years...so basically like the last 15 years (although I believe it is less likely now than before with the 4 team playoff). However...
1) Financial resources do matter in recruiting. It's why VT generally gets beat by programs with greater resources most of the time for recruits, but also why VT generally beats out programs with lesser resources for recruits...just look at the roster and tell me how many kids' had a REAL offer from a school with appreciably better resources than VT. Not many. A bunch may have similar offers, but not many had real offers from the OSUs, Florida's, Georgia's, Texas, Texas A&Ms, etc.

2) You can't compare basketball recruiting and football recruiting. They're 2 totally different animals.
3) Utah was not getting great recruits, nor did they have great talent. Meyer is a good coach who had a system that was ahead of its time.
4) Oregon is generally only slightly better than VT in the recruiting rankings. They've committed to a system and recruit to that system...and most importantly they've had a pretty high hit rate on the recruits they've gotten. Nobody but Oregon saw Marcus Mariotta coming. But if they falter in their evaluations just a little, they could slip pretty quickly.
5) Tennessee is not really a recruiting hotbed.
I think I saw us at 33 according to the coaches poll? Maybe the Power Rankings? This was when all the polls weren't published yet on ESPN, so whichever one I was looking at went down to 35. Why? No idea.
I feel like that's fair.
I DON'T get the unanimous #1 OSU. If they're so unanimous, how were they losing to an unranked team at the half?

Forgot about Duke. Malzhan also went out and got some good/great depth guys at DT because we were so shorthanded after the Chizik debacle and recruiting losses there.
Here's hoping Frank decides to go after some JUCO talent sometime in the future. Or doesn't. It is his show after all.

Especially because its an idea that everyone thinks applies to them. OSU was saying the same thing last year through their playoff run.

# | Locker Room Wrap: Hokies' Defense Befuddled by OSU Blocking Schemes, Playmakers They are not posted anywhere, the ACC office keeps up with them, they're used to determine which "crew" refs the championship game, and pay raises/promotions. Studies by FSU in particular, bear out the facts that ACC refs prefer the home team in conference matchups, the visitor in OOC matchups, and the less favored team in extremely lopsided games. All of these preferences are about 6 fewer penalty yards per game, or one penalty. The ACC and Big East refs consistenly scored higher on these metrics. Since the end of the Big East, the BIG10 has happily decided to compete with the ACC for most biased refs, but again, the difference is one penalty, or 6 yards less.
