That OSU-Bama game was everything I hoped playoff football would be. Great matchup and a hell of a lot of fun to watch (especially because I had no rooting interest; had that been the Hokies in that game I doubt I'd be alive).
I'm with you. I'm already hearing people talking about how amazing the SEC is because of how many top-25 programs they have already. Preseason polls are crap, but within the paradigm we have, yes, OSU was the unanimous #1 in AP. I'll look at the polls again in October.

That was a broken play anyways, but it looked like it was supposed to be just that. I really don't think Ford was going to be the third or fourth read there, Mot just had a guy in his face and did a good job extending the play.

I'll take the silver lining approach:
I was sick watching Brewer take that shot.

But.....that means.to me that Furman and Purdue better put their big boy pants on because I would run the $%@+ out of the football the next two games, and then run it again.
I would tell my offense if we don't get at least 200yds rushing each game I will take ALL of everybody's bowl money and make you wash my wife's car wearing uva jammies from the clearance rack at the thrift shop.
I would rotate each QB 1 series each and say 'May the best QB win.' (and I would include Sam Rogers in that rotation.)
And those are some of the many examples of why I am not a coach.
and it's a narrative that I have no issue with. Going into the playoff there was a lot of doubt around whether they even belonged there. They snuck in over TCU/Baylor and claimed the #4 spot. How many pundits thougt there was no way they'd get past Alabama? Well, they took care of business and won the Championship outright. I think they deserve to be called the undisputed champs for 2014 (as much as it pains me to say that). There is no doubt in my mind that Whit Babcock would trot out something very similar in the event VT won a championship.
That's part of why that pass is a no-no: it's incredibly hard to throw accurately back across your body.
Motley did get a pre-season vote for ACC player of the year last season...so he's got that going for him.

But again, I do believe at the end of the year, we'll have a highly ranked defense once again. Nobody shuts everybody down completely every game all year long.
But I've also read that the trend has been in this direction for some time. I believe the teams with the highest percentage of pre-season #1 votes (in the 90+% IIRC) before this year were...Florida State last year and Bama the year before that.

To put it very mildly, AM struggled. However, I did see one play where he did a great job attacking a blocker's outside shoulder (thank you, Mason) to force the runner inside right into the waiting and loving arms of Chuck Clark.
Outside of that.... ouch. But hey, credit where credit is due, the kid had at least one good play.
They were late exiting the tunnel. Normally they come out right after the build into the main riff and first verse.
Still bad ass.

I don't have a clue of how good this team really is nor do I know how well and/or how quickly 1) the offensive scheme can be adjusted to get the most out of Motley's skill set and 2) how quickly Durkin/Lawson can grow up so that the coaching staff can gameplan without a primary objective being to keep Motley from getting injured.
Doesn't hurt that we finally have an offensive line, a top-rated quarterback in the system, and an offensive coordinator with some potential, either.

I'll give Motley a pass and assume he prepared for his Wildcat package exclusively. It looked like he was getting every third series before Brewer went down and was well prepared for it.
Now he needs to step up and expand that package with some passing concepts. The Wildcat package may be pased onto Durkin, and Motley needs to show us his preparation and knowledge in the passing game.
I not entirely sold on them either even with Bosa (because I think he's dominant against lesser OT's but drops off quite a bit against OTs who punch in his weight class).
VT was able to move the ball on the ground reasonably well when there was a passing threat - and the RBs missed some holes. Either VT's offensive line is really, really improved or OSU's run defense could be exploited by a good OL (like, say, Michigan State's) and RBs with good vision.
If games ended at halftime, we'd be doomed. Seriously, I remember tons of games in which VT was the ranked team and was struggling or trailing at half. Great teams make adjustments and flip the script. Scrappy teams might take you by surprise, but the top teams overcome them.
The "unanimous" comes from a simple fact. OSU had every single # 1 vote in the preseason AP poll. I believe I read that this had never happened before. They are also throwing around the "undisputed" label due to the fact that they won the first College Football Playoff. The complaint with the BCS was that secret formulas set up winners, so the playoff would remove all doubt - the true champion would emerge by real, on-the-field competition amongst the top teams. You can make arguments either way, but that's the narrative.
My older boy has been in Texas schools for about 4 years, after doing 3 years in Virginia.
At least half of his history/social studies lessons have been about Texas history. The other half have been world history.
The Pledge of Allegiance to the state of Texas was a bit disconcerting...
