barf.. can't stand muschamp guy screams douche canoe

They made plays last year too - a big difference was that we were leading the entire game last year - the HEAT was on THEM - it was on US this year - they felt the heat and forced the passes last year. This year, we were ok on D I feel (I don't loot at stats) - they were not blowing us off the line by any stretch. They made the plays they had too, and got the ball in their best players hands more. Now there is no doubt we have some major liabilities (at least watching this game); those IMO are AM is a big step down from a Healthy Chase, and others may disagree, but RVD is a step down from Dinardo (who was a BEAST last year vs. OSU) - yeah, you can talk scheme and all that stuff, but at the end of the day, I didn't hear those guys named, if at all- that means they weren't doing it. Even clarke had some busts, but damm if he didn't bat 2 passes leading to an INT - HE causes issues - the other guys - not. Last point. REAVIS caused issues - he's gone - that one's going to sting all season.

Problems on defense were not because Brewer was injured. Never said they were either. Bud got beat. He got beat by scheme and our players got beat by superior athletes. Mistakes were made, but we were also going against a better team. And no, #1 defense vs #1 offense does not result in a stalemate. They are not directly related. We held our own though until we lost our drive and desire, then fatigue set in.

we've recruited some JUCO players we just never land them, so not sure about never going that route.

Lets all take a chill pill here, how many teams can easily replace their starting QB? Ohio State has a glut of talent back there. but honestly, look around the country at another team with a proven backup behind a starter of a season or more. There are very few. That includes the big boys, quarterback injuries REALLY hurt no matter what talent level you have. Imagine if Cam Newton had gone down for Auburn a few years back, do you really think that team still would have won a national championship. Or what about Tebow at Florida. Its hard to have the level of depth that OSU has at QB, the only other team I can think of is USC with carson palmer and (winces) matt Cassel

Agreed, I like Fleck a lot. He's like a smarter version of Dabo Swinney.

plus he's young and would be a really good hire, in my opinion (given the job he's done in Kalamazoo so far). He must be able to relate to the young stars out there today and going forward, so you'd think recruiting would improve (I don't subscribe to the theory that we can't recruit well just because of who we are and where blacksburg is located).

I believe a young, high-energy coach that puts a premium on recruiting would do wonders for us in this regard.

Iunno Joe this might be the first time I disagree with you. I've been pleased with Searels thus far barring the wake forest game (which lets face it was a disaster all over the damn place..) our offensive line has been making strides since he came along, hes at least gotten able bodied people in there. Its MUCH better than Newsome thats for sure, and frankly with our budget its not like we can go out and buy the best line coach money could buy

It's worth analyzing and fixing.

We can't fix it if we pretend that the problems on defense were solely because Brewer was injured. They weren't.

Hey, it was a tough assignment. Nobody is going to fault VT for not winning it. But if you're going to claim to be a top-10 defense, you have to be able to hold up against a top-10 offense, which I believe OSU to be.

Good point, provided that they do give all 3 an opportunity. What if Mot comes in with a good rhythm and is moving the ball consistently? Do we still throw Durk or DL2 in 'just because'?
With all the hype surrounding DL2, I am just as curious what Durk is capable of.

Somebody has to come in a prove we can move the ball through the air. Otherwise we're going to see stacked lines and D's that dare us to prove otherwise the rest of the way.
With the high possibility of the R word on Sat., you're right, I would fully expect a run heavy attack.

On a light hearted note, let's flip a coin in the huddle prior to each possession to see who gets to run out there. By now, they should all be able to run plays, so it shouldn't matter. If you score, then you earn another series. VT QB BINGO!

trey's stat line was bad but I didn't think he looked bad by any means. There was one series where he had two productive runs and then one pass where he stayed in for protection then leaked out for a 8-9 yard reception. He had two goal line carries from the 1 where he got nothing and I agree he should have scored on either one. He also took a loss on a play with an awful snap that wasn't his issue. That's 3 of his 11 carries that make his YPC look awful compared to the others. I thought he ran pretty hard.

a little background on Holgorsen...the guy that owns my gym used to be the head athletic trainer at the University of Arizona (their Gentry, if you will...in fact, he knows Gentry personally as Gentry studied under the tutelage of Nebraska legend Boyd Epley-whom he also studied under despite going to Iowa). After his pro career ended early (due to a knee problem) he was the S&C coach at tiny Iowa Wesleyan in the late 80s.

They hired a HS coach from Texas called Hal Mumme and his OC was Mike Leach. They had a WR on that team named Dana Holgorsen. He said they only played 10 games a year and their QB threw for 6000+ yards, this was the beginning of the air raid offense that Leach made famous at Texas Tech.

What an amazing staff for a Div 3 school with only a handful of scholarships. I didn't know the Stitt connection...thanks for sharing that info. He made a name for himself at the Colorado School of Mines, didn't he?

Sam Rogers once thru a 60 yard TD pass to himself. It was so incredible that the cameras taping spontaneously combusted, along with the only few eye withnesses. I also tell you this tale at the risk of combustion myself.

not sold on them either especially without bosa. I think they will be right about where they were last year which is a top 20 defense.
