This times 1000. I think the defense even stopped believing when brewer got carted off. The confidence just vanished.
I know its easy for me to say from watching on tv, but had Trey followed Sam on second down he walks in for 6.
McMillian was also a shoe string away from a huge run to the left side.
I think Brewer will get some coaching experience in the next few weeks. I definitely could see him make a career out of it, one day.
The refs were asleep on holding calls in the first half, until they recalled the OSU touchdown, which was multiple holding calls.
French, help me out here. I think I saw two back-to-back zone read offensive plays when Motley was in, just before the pick (which was a back foot throw into double coverage to Ford on a play with - I think - only one receiver - ugh). One both hand-offs to JCC to the right there are HUGE holes to the left that Motley could have kept the ball and ran through for decent and maybe big yards. JCC ran into the entire Buckeye defense both plays. Those 2 decisions trouble me. I guess it only makes sense to give him some space to grow - the opportunity is now.
Motley has to LEAD. He has 2 games coming up that he must lead and help the team win. If he can't do that, next man up. Brewer is a leader with guts. (I am saying is to be positive about the rest of his college career.) If our QB can't lead and demonstrate that to the team, we must move on. I think Lefty will see if this trait exists in Motley easily now that he will get nearly all the reps in practice. Lefty gets tested now also.
I like that Lefty was emotional about Brewer, those two had a connection and Lefty knows that kid is a winner.
He made some big throws. That's what he did to win us a few games at the end of last season. He's still a pretty raw QB talent/prospect and he was playing against a high pressure defense, one that's possibly the best he'll see all year.
I think he did alright, personally...but I really think Meyer and Warriner did him a disservice by the way they used him. He's just not an option QB. JT is an option QB. They kept trying to shoehorn Cardale into a JT gameplan. He's a hang in the pocket, deep passing attack QB who feeds off of a power run game (which in turn feeds off of his deep passing attack), which they didn't bother to even try to use. What'd Zeke have? 10 carries? The Cardale gameplan that was used vs. Wisky, Bama and Oregon was a much simpler blunt force style that works for him. I've yet to really see OSU have any success running option with him, it's always really clunky....but for some reason they keep trying.
I tend to agree. Would rather play Lawson, who is a Power 5 QB but probably doesn't know his ass from veer at this point.
You know after sleeping on it, all I care is Brewer a healthy and speedy recovery. I think the freakin team deflated after that. Defense was already on their heals and honestly looked like they gave up. BUT! We have a lot more football to redeem ourselves. Folks that was one game against #1 team in the nation and I think we saw why they are #1. We have two games to build our next QB before ACC competition happens and Lefty is a good QB coach. Do we see Motley, Durkin, Lawson, Sam FREAKING Rodgers behind center? Let us see what we can do there is still HOPE don't jump off the bandwagon yet, we have been here before!
I would have a hard time assessing our defense after that game. That is an other-worldly offense they have. Our successes were really only due to their boredom. They couldn't decide how they wanted to gain the next 15 yards.
We were way too passive in the front 7, which exposes even the best secondary.
So, yes, I believe we still may have one of the top 5 DL and DB's in the country.
If Lawson was ready, he should've been put in. The fact that he's still got a redshirt tells me that the coaches trust Motley more than him. I know he's a highly touted recruit, but I just don't think he's ready yet.

# | Hokies Fail to Recapture Columbus Magic, Fall to Buckeyes 42-24 and Lose QB Michael Brewer nailed it.. sadly those 3 plays were big plays that resulted in 14-17 points. We might have a game changer in McMillian but time will tell. he was 1 missed tackled/break tackle away on 1 of the jet sweeps.
Sam looked great blocking, running, and catching the ball. I loved when they lined him as a WR one play.
Motley is not a Power Five QB IMO.
As far as I'm concerned that was the most upsetting failure of the night. I felt like the defense quit. I know players get injured. I know our offense is still growing. I know mistakes will be made. But I do not expect our defense to quit until the game is over. I don't mind losing to the best team in the country. But I mind quitting.
Same boat - this one shocked me. Position changes aren't easy, I cannot think of any player who switched from QB to WR/RB/HB and picked it up so quickly. Him and Urban must have worked very hard this off season.

We're all just a bit miffed because we lost our quarterback, AND the defense was on the whole not impressive.

Also thought he gave a good option as a receiver out of the backfield. He did look bad on the goal line though and should have scored on both runs.
One thing was certain last night: Sam Rogers is still Sam Rogers and that's a huge boost to the team.
Yeah, but it seemed to be better in the second half. That dang thing has had issues since it was turned on.
No, but Bud explained it pretty well, I thought. He got outschemed.
"They did a great job with their protection," Foster said. "That was their whole deal. Instead of releasing their back, they were aggressive blocking our mike. We were probably over-concerned about them slip screening and draws. ... We folded our guys in. We were thinking more with all the guys out, quick screens and different things like that. And we probably outsmarted ourselves a little bit from that standpoint, as far as getting some edge pressure a little bit more. But they did a great job. They were aggressive in their protection, and they were much better than they were a year ago. Very little slide protection, which we were expecting quite a bit."
Bud Foster was outcoached. It happens so rarely that it's easy to forget that it's a theoretical possibility. But their offense adjusted to our defense better than our defense adjusted to their offense. Yes, the players made mistakes, too. And I think we really missed C J Reavis. But Ohio State did things Bud didn't anticipate, and didn't do what he did anticipate.
or when you do take it out do it with a sense of urgency. if you hesitate you might as well just down the ball.
Brewer was a stud. Had a few passes i'm sure he wished he could have placed a bit better, but didn't question his judgement on any of the throws. Still took a few sacks that I thought he could have gotten rid of the ball on, but it's better to eat a sack than throw a pick.
You're right after the 75 yard 1 minute drive to start the half the defense did a better job until the offense had two turnovers and we gave up long TDs on both drives. Still wouldn't want to be in that locker room today for film review with Bud.
Were our DBs out there the whole game?
I didn't as see much of them as I'd have liked.
That was not their proudest moment, and it's not all because of Brewer.

I hated to see Brewer get hurt, but if anyone can get the next one prepared it's Beamer & Co. You have a lot of solid players at key positions and you'll be just fine.
I also want to thank everyone here for being such good sports to us fans of 1 of your competitors. All that I've heard and experienced with Hokie fans was nothing but the best. You all are a class-act & I hope you win the rest of your games.
You know sad to say but I don't remember seeing this kind of behavior when we played Alabama... just sayin. Maybe hating on the SEC isn't so bad...
