# | Hokies Fail to Recapture Columbus Magic, Fall to Buckeyes 42-24 and Lose QB Michael Brewer I would like to congratulate OSU for the win. They have some incredible athletes and got a lot out of them. While the loss of Brewer makes it easier to wonder "what if?", it seemed to me that they showed why they are considered the #1 team in the nation.
Personally, though, last night left me feeling deflated. Maybe too much hype, maybe too much offseason excitement, but I do feel like just stepping back for a few days and trying to get my perspective back. Yes, I did see some things to like, but I am disappointed that some of the figures I looked forward to seeing contribute didn't contribute much, and while there were times that Lane seemed like the Lane I wanted to see/hear, it is obvious that things have changed somewhat.
We'll see what kind of coaches we have now. Short week to prepare, new starting QB to get ready, hope the team can shake it off more quickly than I feel like I will. It's one thing to say we have to move on, it's another to do it, but of course, we must.
We returned at least three kicks from the endzone that did not make the 25 yard line. Our best return went from the 3 to the 26. They need to stop taking the damn kicks out of the endzone when the coverage is good.
It's really important to give the impression that we are aware Frank's career is coming to an end and are prepared for the transition. I'm sure Whit's fingerprints are all over this.

Wasn't Brewer and Motley in a QB battle for the starting job in the Spring?
They were tied on the depth chart the whole Spring.
Didn't Brewer just come off a season where he threw 15 interceptions (had 5 games with less than a 35 QBR), and our excuse was that he hadn't been in the offense long enough to know the system... but now everyone is calling for Lawson?
We have to give Motley a chance IMO, then see where we are after a couple games.
I don't think you can judge him by his performance last night.
Did anyone else at the game or on TV notice the million dollar video board was pretty crappy last night? Middle section just kept crapping out.
If Joshua Jackson continues to impress like he is, it might not matter if Lawson goes pro early.
Special teams was one of the bright spots yesterday outside of kickoff returns. I know slye missed a 50 yarder, but he had plenty of leg on it and that's a tough kick to make as the first of a season. He nailed a 46 yarder again with plenty of leg and put every kickoff threw the end zone. Hughes also looked good with good placement and distance on his punts. The only good kickoff return I remember was TM when it seemed like he was off to the races if not for the kicker making a form tackle. Derwoun greene had one where he hesitated and should have taken a knee and brought it out to like the 15. Stroman reminds me of KJ on the punt returns where everytime i'm a bit worried that he's going to get blown up and fumble.
French, I know you might still be processing the game, but do you think you could give out a grade for each player? Seems like there is improvement to be had all over the field. Thanks and as always, Go Hokies!
Speaking of, I really liked our tempo last night. For the first time in forever, we could play offense at the pace the game warranted with no appreciable dropoff in execution whether we huddled or played hurry-up.
The video put up seemed like something that should have been released next year for his last year.
Actually, it does. Momentum shift. Motley did nothing, and a defense called on to go back out after rapid-fire 3 and outs not only get tired, they get demoralized. When playing OSU, pitching a shutout is not an issue. All sides have to contribute. You notice in the first half, the defense locked down as our offense picked up. That's not just coincidence. The units were feeding off each others' energy.
The defense gave up a long scoring drive out of the half, unable to immediately account for OSU's adjustments, but the defense then forced punts the next couple of possessions after Brewer went out. The offense just did nothing. Play that game against OSU and eventually the floodgates will open, which is exactly what happened.
We don't surrender 42 points if Brewer was in the game until the end. I'm not saying we would have won (though I'll go to my grave believing it; just a hunch I have) but the offense was moving the ball. Brewer was zoned in and playing by far the game of his career, 68% completion rate, almost 10 yards per attempt, no turnovers, on pace to flirt with 300 yards. He would have kept the offense moving, kept their offense off the field, and put points on the board.
agreed the block he made on I believe it was TM's run was also a thing of beauty. Guy is a stud and has a chance to get drafted with a strong year.

And I know TOP was relatively similar but thar isn't a recipe for success when one team is running the hurry up and the other isnt.

Cardale - argh, when are we going to be able to stop a running QB.
Zeke - again with the exception of the 80 yard play, the defense did a good job on him.
Yeah let's be honest for a second and admit that we will not play anyone of OSU's caliber for the remainder of the season. So take any negativity towards our defense with a grain of salt. Now if they get torched against Furman and Purdue, we can revisit that, but right now is not a time to be freaking out.
If Lawson is as good as they say his is, he won't stay four years anyhow. Use him before we lose him.
I'm sticking up for Kramer here. I will admit that Cardale's tweet (while I personally didn't mind it) may not have been the classiest thing ever said on social media. That being said, some the above posts by Hokies weren't too classy either.
Dude beat us bad. Our defense did not put up the performance we were expecting. Let's not be sore losers.
So anOSU owes us a qb and they have so many quality ones on the roster...
it explains the lack of rest we got.. OSU knew Motley wasn't going to throw.. so they loaded the box and had 1 safety deep just in case.
Our D looked ok at times and mediocre at others, OSU will absolutely eat teams alive this year. I'm proud of the way they still fought.
We should see both Motley and Durkin most likely in the first half.
Trey was still running upright. On that goal line series, after his first two downs where he didn't follow Sam, we wanted the ball handed to Sam on third down.
Yeah, when I said that, I was certain Brewer had taken a medical hardship waiver for his back injury at TT. Turns out I was wrong.
they blanketed him with a LB underneath and a safety over the top.... which is exactly why Malleck had great success running the in between routes for 8-10 yards..
The defense falling apart is something we have seen many times in a similar situation. You can only hold on so long playing tough D when you know the offense isn't going to do anything. We didn't even have a pulse on offense after we lost Brewer and eventually the defense will sense that and through a combination of being tired, frustrated, and losing hope, sometimes games get away from us. Same thing happened against UCLA. Fuller has never bit on a double move in his career, not something you see from a fully focused Fuller, it felt to me like it was over before that TD and I can't help but think some players had the same thought.
