Punish the entire team with conditioning. Punish them with two-a-days. But to punish them by making them sit is wrong. Benching a player is for when they've continuously violated team rules, are in legal trouble, or do something that is legitimately wrong.

hell, I take offense to that. Then again, I'm the guy who tells people to shut up when they're chanting "over-rated!" I want every one of our opponents to be considered the best. If we beat them, we did something great. If we lost, well we lost to the best. That's why last year was so hard to swallow. We beat the best(anOSU), then lost to the worst (WtF)

# | Report: Cincinnati's Tommy Tuberville may withhold money from players (Sports Illustrated) Before anyone gets carried away with hypotheticals, does anyone know how much we have actually fined players? I mean has the season total been in the 5 figures, or has it been under $1000 TOTAL. I would venture a guess it's on the lower side, as it should be, with the "rules of engagement" set forth up front. The infractions aren't things that are simply made up and can be used against someone willy nilly.
We have an equipment department, so there should be close to zero fines in that department. There's no excuse. The tutor thing shouldn't be an issue, and missing classes happens here and there, but in the day and age of twitter and easy access via mobile devices, stuff gets reported quickly and easily. Again, I can't see the team rolling up a huge amount of fines, which means the rules are in place to keep things in line and it's working.

funny thing is, I don't oppose fines, but let's not go to crazy hypotheticals to make a point. It's just as bad as people saying that Foster would fine a kid who's living in a cardboard box trying to feed his 6 kids just because the rules say so.
Good post. Too many fans get too emotionally invested in the games and forget to enjoy the experience (tailgating with friends, cooking good food, the atmosphere at Lane). I used to be that guy who was in a bad mood for 2 days after a bad loss. Miami 2005 cured me of that. I walked out of that game in a horrible mood. I made a spiteful comment to my wife when we were walking out after she said something about the game. That is when she stopped me, looked at me and asked me if I played in that game? She asked me, "How do you think the guys who were on the field feel? They practiced for days for it and played hard. Why are you even upset? Does the outcome of this game have any effect on your real life?" At that point the light bulb finally went on.
Whether we win or lose, it doesn't change my life. Don't get me wrong, when I'm at a game I still yell until I have no voice and clap and stomp until my hands and feet hurt. But when the game is over if we lost I hang my head for a min and then quickly move on. I too can't wait for this season to start! I'm as hopeful as I've ever been. Win or lose, I'll still be cheering GO HOKIES!

Ok, I have to take offense to this...
Georgia Tech maybe more difficult to prepare for but many consider this Ohio State offense to be one of the most loaded ones in recent memory. They arguably have the best Quarterback (2?) Running Back, Wide Receiver, Offensive Tackle, and Offensive Guard in the country. Not to mention B. Miller at Hback.
Yes, they are down a few wide receivers in game one but don't expect Georgia Tech to show up next monday.

Maybe that game was your only conference loss of the year and caused you to miss out on the conference championship. Coaches get bonuses and schools get some incentives from their contracts with uniform companies for that. So now that missed quarter has cost the school, let's just call it $100,000. But what if that game was your only loss of the season and now you missed out on the playoff. That mistake just cost your team, your school, and your conference a couple million. But we could have just charged you $50 and been square. You're right though, let's have a couple million dollars less coming to the school instead of charging a player $50.

Our coaches are humans and have hearts. Do you really think they'd take money from someone if every dime they had was going to supporting a child? Hell, we had a coach in the delivery room when his daughter was born. Poor choice of example really. These "fines" are meant to teach a lesson, not make your life miserable. Don't you think players would have complained about it before now if there was actually an issue with them?

I hope you're right. At this time though, that IS the weakest part of our defense based on trends that started since before last season ended. I am not the football expert on this blog, but there are several very good prognosticators here on TKP and there is plenty of their material to back up my statement.
If guys like Tremaine and others step up, learn the position fast, and help Moto and they play their socks off, I will absolutely love it. But, I'm not gonna put my head in the sand and deny that we have a weakness when its pretty apparent that we do.
