I thought they were only being doled out for the most egregious personal foul penalties. Rouse got it for essentially intentionally hurting the Duke QB in that game on two extremely late hits. It's my understanding that usually personal fouls result in 6 ams and conditioning. Although, the way it's being discussed it certainly seems as though it's been used to discipline for other offenses as well. They've been doing it for years. Not sure how anyone who's been a fan for over 5 years or so wouldn't have been aware of it. In either case, nobody has ever complained about it before that I've ever heard- player, fan, or media. The bowl game has always been seen as a reward and they get everything paid for and receive gifts and souvenirs. The per diem is essentially for extra stuff at night outside of team activities. That makes some sense- if you don't behave, you don't get to have fun on our dime.
nice try, but no. None of this has to do with MV1 signing with Pittsburgh. I was not referring to emissions "only" [not sure why you assumed that I was]. I certainly consider the entire supply line, as well as overall environmental impacts and economic benefits. Look the world will eventually transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. It's time you get with the program. You bash electric vehicles, and then you follow it up by bashing solar, and then you make a weird comment about mining pollution being caused by making Prius batteries, and you make an even stranger reverse claim about electric vehicles hiding pollution. Give me a break. I completely disagree with every point you tried to make. It's the oil and natural gas industries that have hid the "environmental costs" of their businesses from the general public for the last century - that is just laughable that someone would attempt to turn that argument around and try to use it against electric cars. Look, there's no point in arguing with someone that clearly has been brainwashed by Fox News...I'll just end this by writing Go Hokies! Beat OSU! And I won't reply again.

Offseason, spring, and fall camp is generally when most of the learning of the system is done.
I get your point - but like I said in this post, a $10 fine to Antone Exum wouldn't mean much. A $10 fine to Darren Evens may have meant he couldn't afford diapers for his baby.

This might be semantics, but the penalty for 7 uniform violations was $1,600. The penalty for 8 violations is missing the bowl game entirely.
No, he was blocking for the kicker. That being said, defensive players block on the punt and kick teams all the time. Heck, DiNardo captained our punt protection unit last year. Doesn't mean he's getting o-line reps per se.
I think 97VT540's point is that if a player comes from a family of means, $80 might not be that much to him, so he could repeat the same minor offense 8 times for virtually no loss.

Make them do community service, make them clean the bathrooms or the dining halls, I don't care. I just don't think it's ok for an 8-figure business to take money from an individual who isn't a real employee to begin with.
EDIT: In response to your FSU comparison, which I know was tongue and cheek, but if our administration ever responded to a rape or domestic abuse accusation with a fine, I would be furious. At that point, you are literally sending a message that money solves problems.
That's another aspect of the problem with monetary punishments - it affects different people differently. For Antone Exum, who came from a family of means, $10 probably was not a big deal. For Darren Evans, who had a kid and a family to raise, that $10 fine for missing class could be preventing him from buying diapers for his infant child. If Darren slept in one day, and missed his 8am classes, would you really want to prevent him from buying diapers for his kid?
The obvious response to the above scenario is that the coaches exercise discretion in who/what/when they use monetary punishment - I think this could cause issues with the team chemistry. It's best to stay away from fines and stick to other forms of punishments. Like I said, find something. Give the equipment guys friday afternoon off, and have the trouble makers do everyone else's laundry. It's not that hard to think of a non-monetary punishment.
Alright, ladies and gents. Let's talk about this with respect to a similar situation. I went to Tech on a Navy ROTC scholarship (thanks to all of you wonderful taxpayers for buying me a $100,000 Political Science degree). When I accepted the scholarship, I signed a contract outlining my responsibilities as a midshipman. In exchange for money, I agreed to uphold my end. Now, my sophomore year, I dicked around a little bit, and my grades in Physics 2305 got me in a bit of trouble. As a result, the Navy withheld $700 dollars worth of stipend money. Was the Navy the bad guy, taking money from a poor college student, or was I to blame because I didn't meet my obligations under the agreement which I acknowledged and signed?
Hmmmmm brewing beer. Im gonna toss that out to our development team.
I shit you not, I once had the option of giving blood (which I hate) or doing the marching bullshit (which I also hate). The Corps literally sucked the life out of me. And on top of that, after giving blood, I basically sprinted to the head, passed out, hit my head, and got concussed. Still better than RDS at 6 am on a Saturday.
Amen brother. Having too much fun in the AZ sun to attempt anything greater than business math.
Finally caught up and saw this episode. Totally lost my shit laughing because it's even better with sound and in the context of the preceding 5 minutes.

# | Bitter blog - Babcock offers clarification on player fines, shuts down entire practice That's a ridiculous comparison. Our coaches are not and should not be police; their job is far more intricate. Other reasons why your comparison is invalid:
- You are able to explore and market yourself on the free market, college football players are not.
- You are putting other lives at risk by speeding, college football players are not putting other lives in danger by not attending class, or skipping a team meal.
- You aren't making a voluntary choice to be a citizen of the US (yes, you could leave, but it's not like the US was recruiting you, like college students are recruited).
- Local government often has a legitimate need for this money. Our football team does not.
If you pay athletes based on performance, you're allowed to fine them based on detrimental performance. There are so many other wise to punish a player, why would you take money from them? If their transgression is that serious, kick them off the team.
Obviously you've never been through a Corps Room Inspection if you think "keep your room clean" is too controlling.
$50 vs Marching Tours? I'll pay the $50 and sleep in, thank you very much.
