I agree, but I'm saying even if they hadn't questioned Bud, or had he responded... better... we'd still be seeing this and getting the backlash, as ridiculous as I think it is.

Implicitly states that you were getting paid to play football. You are not getting paid to play football, you are getting a chance at an education via a scholarship in exchange for your athletic ability and keeping good academic standing at the University. If a player skips class and doesn't make the grades then they will be ruled ineligible and lose the scholarship and have to withdraw from the University if they can't afford to pay the bill on their own and gain readmittance. The players did in fact "Come here to play school". The players will be held accountable for their own actions by basis of staying eligible if you don't want the opportunity someone else will .
I believe that the media saw those monitors and that is what triggered the line of questioning to Bud.

That is not completely accurate.
It could be, but the TV does not say that nor does did Bud. He said they were "exploring" the option of using COA fees. This could have been the bowl game money or this could have been the COA. In actuality though, we do not know what it was from. Heck, the "players punished" could just have been an example of how it might work with the players. We don't have enough info to know for sure and never will.
Bitter restated this same point on 101.7 this afternoon - although he did point out that Bud did talk like it had been discussed as to maybe using COA money.

Just because we stopped doing it doesn't take away from the fact that we were doing it for years. People are going to want to talk about that.
Does anybody think these images wouldn't have been released if Bud hadn't slipped up in his question? I think we'd be having the same conversation today without Bud as the scapegoat, honestly. Once the media gets their hands on a picture like this, it doesn't matter what anybody says.

# | Bitter blog - Babcock offers clarification on player fines, shuts down entire practice I think what we are trying to prevent is a negative recruiting aspect from other colleges saying "Well look Tech will take your money but we don't do that here" also again it's about the expenses of going to college even the bowl games you're in a strange city and you have extra expenses. The amount seems so small what's the point then it just encourages the boosters to slip a guy an extra 50 because he lost his bowl money

# | Virginia Tech's game at Purdue on 9/19/15 is scheduled for 3:30 PM I expected there to be a section of these down by the field similar to the section we give opposing fans near their team entrance. I did not expect there to be many seats, but also did not think they would be this bad.
If that's the case, it's pretty crappy that Rouse was fined in 2006.
I'm incredibly disappointed to hear that our go to for disciplinary actions in the past were to monetarily fine kids who were prevented by the NCAA to earn money to pay it off. We should be better than that.

I am not sure the extent and benchmarks of punishment for all that was listed here, before the stipend. But addressing it immediately via monetary punishments is not what I'd expect to be the first reaction from VT administration. I feel like monetary punishment, to people who have very little money, is flat out shitty.
If the kid is that much trouble, consistently, kick him off the damn team and allow them no stipend. Not a fan of the stepwise fine plan. Fan of Whit, and his quick halt of this.

This line if we stay healthy is going to cause major problems for offenses. We got 9 guys and Marshall can move out and play some DE and Mihota can slide in and play some DT . Ekanem is primed for a big year . We can keep guys fresh and we can go run heavy and or pass rush heavy . This could be our best DL . We have emerging players Dooley ,Mihota and Woody to go along with the talent of the starters and the experience they have had . If the back layers are as good as I think and I think Fuller ,Facson and Clark are as good of any 3 we have had back there at 1 time . This D is going to flat out stifle some teams this year and create some field position and turnovers .
Obviously new information trumps interpretation.
I still don't believe this is as big a deal as some are making it out to be. Bad policy? Perhaps. Will it be used against us in recruiting? Definitely, and we have to fight back. Are we going to be singled out as the only ones doing this? Ultimately, no, I don't believe that. Other schools are certainly doing this or something similar.
This is a screw-up, but at least it's a screw-up on the side of good behavior and order. I'd take "VT went too far in enforcing rules to keep their players in class and make them good citizens and fully invested teammates" over "Miami gave recruits hookers and blow" or "UNC awarded fake degrees."
This is all eye candy for now, which still feeds into the instant news cycle that "requires" instant analysis and rebuttal.
