Noticed that they call the defensive positions (Sam) using the other teams' terminology.

I think it's part of the world we're living in now where everything comes out fast and on Twitter. For me, reading these statements over and over again, is that Foster said, "we're looking at this as a possibility," to which Whit replied, "we're going to discontinue that conversation." Since he followed up with a statement that fines never happened and never will, this is all I can come up with. Perhaps a bit inarticulate, but by the time Whit found out and made a statement, Bud was already getting bashed on social media and with click-bait BS articles, so he had to make some statement, fast.

Mike & Mike just called out Bud this AM during a few segments of their show... not the kind of news attention we want going into the OSU game, but IN BUD WE TRUST!

And I do agree taking money from "cost of attendance" stipends doesn't sit well with me, but if (when) we get to paying players it's 100% got to come into play!

In light of all the injury news this week, I sure hope our starters are practicing with sock'em boppers and bubble wrap armor. Next weekend needs to come much sooner. No more injuries!

the defense can't get much better, where as the offense has plenty of room to improve...

oh certainly! And I'm really hoping our offense does improve. I'm expecting some improvement there, but not 24 points worth. I think our offense will be able to score 24-31 points on ECU. 45 seems like a bit of a pipe dream. Trust me, I'll gladly eat crow if our offense lights up the scoreboard. I just don't see it happening, realistically. And all of this is based on previous years' results. Without that historical context, there is really no argument that can be made for or against the likelihood of scoring 45 points on ECU and that is what this debate has turned into. Is historical data relevant to this conversation or not? I believe it is. Without it we couldn't even have this debate..

I think he was just saying most people are just confused because the response was that it will be "discontinued"

which means that it was already going on.

Just a weird situation all around.

I think it may be as I feared, he overreacted (just like ESPN) without all the details, although with good intentions.

Deadspin can go someplace cold with Matt Ryan.

This may be sarcasm I guess, but to counter your point...the defense can't get much better, where as the offense has plenty of room to improve...

I mean..I know they're different teams playing in different seasons but they're coached by the same people. Just like we expect Bud Foster to field a defense that will limit opponents to 21 points or less more often than not, I expect our offense not to score 45 points on much of anybody. I hope I'm wrong but the general consensus seems to be that the jury is still out on SL and this offense. We haven't seen drastic improvements yet so what's to say that we will see drastic improvements this season? The argument that fans critical of Loeffler are making that he isn't right for the job since he can't field a productive offense is predicated on previous seasons' results. The correlation is used to make that argument and it's a pretty strong argument IMO. I don't think you can just totally throw out history as irrelevant. Historically, VT has been a good team defensively and has struggled offensively. If we deem that history to be irrelevant then why do we heap so much praise on Foster for his irrelevant accomplishments?

I can't wait until we have an overstack, one hole, with the free safety favoring the jacket, off coverage. It's a premiere.

I have no idea what it is, but MAN I'm JUICED for it!

I could also read it to say VT wants to run a clean ship that does it the right way and that's the kind of people I want to be around.... just sayin
