We were looking at the best defensive backfield we've ever had. However, we always have good talent to work with. Sometimes that's hurt us, filing a DB in a key roll, but we will be OK. Time for someone to step up.

Based on football only: 2004. Jwillhokiealum is absolutely right that VT was in a dark place at the start of the 2004 season. The 2003 year started out with high hopes, but after the blowout loss to West Virginia, which I will never forget, our season pretty much went down the toilet (minus a win against a top five Miami), losing 5 out of our last seven games.
2004 was our first year for football in the ACC. At the start, many people felt we didn't belong. We had to pull out all the stops to even get in the ACC and then the 2003 season cemented in a lot of people's minds that we were the "Chokies." In 2004, we had top ranked USC scheduled for our first game, and everyone expected a blowout loss. We kept it close until a bad pass interference penalty against us that gave USC the edge and eventual win. We beat Western Michigan and Duke and then lost to NC State by missing a last second field goal to put us at 2-2. Up next was West Virginia who was undefeated and ranked #7. After 2003 no one gave us much of a chance. The game itself was tight until we blocked a field goal attempt and returned it for a touchdown, sealing the win (back when we still did that).
We won a couple more against Wake Forest and Florida A&M and then came up against Georgia Tech. We trailed for most of the game, finding us down 14-0 early and then 20-12 with little more than 5 minutes left. We then scored 22 unanswered to beat the Jackets. This was Eddie Royal's coming out game.
We then beat North Carolina in a squeaker and blew out Maryland at home. This set up a match-up against UVA at home where both of us were ranked. The first half was close, but we pulled away in the end. This was the game that started the decade of dominance against UVA.
This set up a defacto ACC championship game against Miami at Miami that we ended up winning. Considering that everyone expected Miami to the class of the ACC, and considered us to be the also-ran, winning the ACC in our first year in the league was special.
Bryan Randall really stepped up that year and made it a lot of fun going through the season.

That post referenced "The guys (read: not posters, sane people) over on 247", which is still #sources in my mind.
If TG had come out and stated on the record something like "I don't know why we are listed among potential schools for him because he doesn't have and won't receive an offer from VT.", then that would be a different matter.
Would we have expended any recruiting effort on a DB that TG thought "wasn't a good fit"? I hope not, unless we had a different position in mind for him (WR?).

# | Bitter blog - Safety C.J. Reavis not enrolled at VT, appealing student conduct decision Consider that this is a huge blow not just to the secondary, but to Special Teams as well. Considering CJ's play last season on ST and the plays he made in Spring. This is a loss that hurts deeply.
That's nothing, yesterday I accidentally swallowed some food coloring. The doctor says I'm OK, but I feel like I've dyed a little inside.

Reavis not enrolled at VT, appealing student conduct decision One of the few positives from this is that if it were going to happen, I'd rather it happen now than in August. At least the coaches have a little more time to think of a contingency plan, and his backup can get his mind right, prepare mentally for that opener.

Secondly, this thing is really not in the radar of anyone but VT fans. It's a bad situation for the guy, but I don't necessarily see a young man that was lied to by a younger female and ended up having consensual sex with her as some kind of predator or monster.

Bad headline for VT, but there are some interesting comments from Jimmy Turk in the Shai case:
Turk believes the law in Virginia needs to be amended because, he said, the girl involved in the case told McKenzie she was older than she actually was.
"The girl in this case lied about her age both in person and online," Turk said. "She was asked about her age and lied about it both online and in person. I think that's an area the legislature should consider, to what degree someone is culpable for a criminal act when they're lied to."
Best parts: no Hayden Christiansen, no dull and listless Natalie Portman "acting" (though she's kinda hot), and absolutely NO Jar Jar!

Real shame because the kid was a talent and loved being a Hokie. But for this kind of result, he did something he knew he shouldn't have.
