Very good points; we're in overall agreement. Team dynamics vary from year to year beyond just replacing key losses. A player may have a great year and then regress the next. You never know who will step up but determining that takes time.
However, I do think it is reasonable to look at what a team has and use that to make predictions about how you can expect it to perform. If a team had a star that accounted for much of their production and he leaves you can expect them to be down. Similarly, if production was spread across a number of players a few losses should have less impact. It's easy to see and assess that type of impact since you see the stats. What's hard to account for is what I call second tier impact. Who will replace Spencer's downfield blocking ability? His key hits enabled Elliot to gain extra yards.
That said, both tOSU and VT return the core of their teams; and should be able to build on that to be good teams. I give us a slight edge overall and thus think we should be 10 - 14 point favorites; it could be much closer as game time approaches. Based on what little I know I am expecting a tight game, with us pulling away in the 4th base don what I see as a greater offensive depth to wear down VT's defense.
As in all predictions, your mileage may vary. Professional poster on a closed course. Do not attempt this at home.

I like his athleticism and the way he high-points the ball. Some good wiggle, too for someone his size. We good use a big-bodied WR.
Be interested to see their line on the Clemson GT game. They have FSU GT as a push and Clemson only favored by 2 against FSU.
I believe one of the upcoming years in the not too distant future we play Michigan, ND and WVU which could be good or bad. But a pretty good OOC slate at least from the name perspective.
I graduated 05 from salem. So a fair amount of my negativity could be because landstown opened up my freshman year. A lot of the better athletes at landstown would have gone to salem if it had never opened up.
I have been told Harvin would have been in Salem but I dont know the validity of that.
Yeah if the can still do the drum cadence and have the MV's say and do something else I don't think the few in the crowd that actually know stick it in will overtake everyone and make it stick it in. That is a great cadence. Even Whit admitted to it.
Interesting that he mentioned they may put black and grey accents on the uniforms.
none of us knows exactly what words Buzz used with Malik (in my experience in doing performance reviews, the recipient of a poor review usually doesn't remember either) but go back and listen to the post game interviews last year...Buzz has been consistent and open in saying that we needed better players

OT: don't remember if you've had military service (edit: yes, navy pilot) but the baggers at the Commissaries work only for tips. It's hard not to feel bad just taking my own bag out to the car, as I usually don't buy much and they've added self checkouts. .
Excellent point about the academies. I think the problem is that they aren't all that easy to get into. Regardless, what is usually done is submit some relative's address in the district and claim to be living there. When a complaint from another team is filed, it is my understanding that someone from the public school system follows the kid home to see if he actually goes to the address. That part sounds a little difficult to believe. Though logical, it seems fraught with legal implications in today's world, but what do I know?
As for Heastie, I am almost certain that he was a freshman at Cox, demanded playing time, was rebuffed, and the saga began. I don't know if he played JV, or not at all, after the "slight". No one had any idea who he was at that time, and kind of laughed about the arrogance - that's why I remember. Then years later we put it together. He was hailed far and wide as a "top WR in the country", though. LOL. This is why I ALWAYS love recruiting reports from regular guys that actually go to the games. Those reports from knowledgeable fans are often better than what you read from recruiting services.
I am digressing, but I love recruiting and HS football. Congratulations if you made it this far...
Finally, I have to touch on Beatty, who is always an interesting topic to me...I have no doubt that kids/parents gravitated to his success, and I also doubt he discouraged bending rules to get them there. Say what you will about Beatty, and most have plenty of negative things to say, but the guy was a legendary offensive mind in VHSL. I always point out that the top 3 passers in VHSL history all accomplished their records under Beatty's offense, and at 3 different schools (Sims/OS may have moved to the top since). Analyzing that in depth, including looking at the lack of star power in QB's that did it, and you have no choice to conclude that the records were all about Beatty. Tell me how a QB from Stafford has a top 3 QB in VHSL history without Beatty? Just remarkable, IMO.
I think you are correct in your thought process. It applies to us as well. We feel we have to be better just because we refuse to believe it can be worse. I am really looking forward to VT taking back big games in Lane. I hope OSU fans enjoy Blacksburg and campus.
The drum beat is cool and there would be no complaints if you didnt have thousands of people (students mainly) who can barely stand up and are too drunk to even know whats going on in the game, doing pelvic thrusts at the drop of said beat. It is right there with the wave as far as the annoying factor. I am far from a stick in the mud, and am probably have been considered by many an alchy myself. But, this behavior is what led to the demise of stick it in. It got to the point I dreaded it being played, seemed like some people were more excited to do that jig than see the team score a TD.
Bill Roth, that is something to truly miss. Or Tyrod Taylor, Bryan Randall, Xavier Adibi, Danny Coale, Eddie Royal or Brandon Flowers

Man, I hate this news. Having guys in the hole learning and growing from our coaches while waiting for their time is not *optional* if we're going to get back to truly challenging for the ACC crown - in this case, Whitehead especially.
I'd love to know what % of recruits who are forced to JUCO or Prep eventually work their way to VT. Anyone have a good data source for that?
I miss it so much. It wouldn't be a problem if it didn't include the pelvic thrust motion that everyone did along to the beat.
At best, that's a fourth-hand account.
In any event, sports are like musical chairs in that there are so only so many spots, and there is competition for those spots. This is Buzz William's team, and he's got to assess the players and get the best talent on the floor for Virginia Tech. To do anything less would be not doing his job.

I'm not jumping to conclusions. You never know if words were twistes or over exaggerated. I'd rather Buzz tell him he's not good enough to play and him have a chance to transfer and have a great career at a smaller school than drag him along. Let's be real, Malik wasn't an NBA prospect here.

# | Meta: How do we want to organize our discussion on recruiting? ....is lurking. Baby #2 almost here, job changed a bit so less time on a computer. Still have my swivel up but Joe and his team have been doing a pretty bang up job so I have only been chiming in if it hasn't already been brought up or if I think I have a unique perspective on a topic.
As for this topic, if we go to a consolidated post on a regular basis I will be glad to help. Maintaining data is something I have a knack for.
