Virginia Tech makes an effort to modernize its stadium somewhat.
Do the fans that fill the stadium not matter anymore?

It is, but not by that much. I'm guessing what is currently installed is a metal halide system which requires a ballast to control the power in the metal halide lamp (warming electrodes and sending an electrical arc).
The LED system includes the LED and a driver to control the current going through the LED. The wiring will likely be the same, it will just be replacing the ballast and lamp. The ballast/lamp is an assembly and the driver/LED should be the same.
The ballast/lamp setup takes a while to warm up and uses 4 times as much energy when operating so that's why the ROI is so good and makes this such a no brainer. This is the main reason I've been so frustrated at not having LEDs. It's been an obvious choice that saves money in the long term for 10 years now.
I would ask you to walk up the stairs in Lane Stadium at night during a strobe light show while carrying your food and drinks and see how difficult it can be. Would you be able to see the faded row letters on the stairs as you do so? How about after a couple beers at the game?
Just because everyone else does strobe light shows doesn't mean VT has to join the club. Figure out a better way to use them in Lane that doesn't put someone's safety at risk.
Also video games usually come with a warning if there is a chance some flashing light will cause a seizure. Is VT going to put the same warning on all tickets so they are liable for any issues caused by the flashing lights?
Also also, if it's all about what is seen on TV, why is everyone always complaining about game day experience in Lane? Do the fans that fill the stadium not matter anymore?
While any money can be viewed as hypothetically used for some future effort...
Like, say, for a future Cassell Colosseum modernization effort?
They have officially announced Staff appointments.
At that scale (stadium lights), though, I'll bet it's a bit more complicated than swapping out whatever bulbs are in there now for LED bulbs.
I don't think the in game experience is going to be that bad. Everyone clamoring over "strobing light shows" and "seizures" for every good play must not have ever played video games, watched movies, or attended any concert in the past 20 years either.
The on TV product will pop too and isn't that the most important thing at the moment? "Oh look, Virginia Tech looks like a good football team again, and they have a high profile coach too? And their stadium doesn't look boring AF once the Enter Sandman entrance has worn off?"
We should be trying to get recruits and future possible students alike to be saying:

If Whit made that same presentation 5-10 years earlier it absolutely would have fallen on deaf ears if not led to his firing
I think this is the first time anyone other than Franklin is talking with the media. The second episode of Set in Stone featured Pry a bit.
Edit:

He was in the second episode of the Set in Stone series. https://www.thekeyplay.com/comment/1349094#comment-1349094

Is this the first time we have heard from Pry since his firing? I am curious on what the media is going to ask him. It should be interesting.
Got the record the other facility upgrades are modernized heating and cooling for the indoor practice facility and a scoreboard/video board replacement in Lane.
Giving Franklin the reigns in this school in this location could also be something that cements him here for the long haul. He's going to make this school exactly what he thinks a football program should be and as long as we keep funding him as he asks, there really won't be a reason to leave. Miami got to the national championship this year without even playing in the ACC title game, so it's been proven that the ACC name isn't going to hold him back, so there really shouldn't be the draw of the grass being greener as long as we don't screw it up.
Good!
VT is a major in state university with historically the most high profile football program between Pennsylvania and South Carolina. We absolutely should do whatever we can to present ourselves as a big time program because whether we like it or not, in this area we are that kind of program. And by positioning ourselves like we should, the advertising and merchandising money will follow.
Hopefully someone asks Franklin his stance on pie vs cake.

It absolutely is and absolutely should be about the students first and then everyone else as a welcomed guest. The in game entertainment and atmosphere should be for the people who currently make Virginia Tech their home and are paying tens of thousands to live there every year.
IMHO all of us others should just be happy they are welcoming us back.
Wat?
Will the team be sponsored by Marie Callender's, Betty Crocker, Tillamook, or stay brand-aligned with Turkey Hill?
We need to know this team's official dessert stance.
Then, definitely, do it! Get a yardage book...it definitely helps on this course. Enjoy. It's an impressive property.

Also, from what I gather, Franklin basically has full control of the football program. Whit is signing the checks and largely working on ensuring compliance with the changing NCAA and NIL landscape. That may come as a relief to many on this board. I've been in a few meetings with Whit and I can tell you, his business acumen and ability to navigate the complexities is an asset. He's taken some flak on this board (and I've been critical too) but I'm encouraged by what I've seen.
But it should be.
The reason I donate (as someone who doesn't live close enough to have/take advantage of season tickets) is that I believe in paying it forward. Donations of fans/alumni before me helped create a talented football team that made my college experience very enjoyable. I feel obligated to give so students today can (one day, hopefully) have a similar experience.
Idk, I just think college football should be about the students (and the rest of the university). I get that donating money gives you influence (and to be clear - I do NOT donate enough to deserve a shred of influence), but I still think that the students/players/university members are key stakeholders. If the lights need to be replaced (as I understand they do) and LED lights are the current 'best standard' out there, then let's do it. If kids these days want it to feel like a rave, then lets fuckin rave.

I personally am indifferent to LED lights. My thoughts have always been if you have to do fancy tricks to make your atmosphere better, you dont have that great of an atmosphere to begin with.
That said, everyone else is doing it, and us not doing it would show lack of commitment. So I'm fine with it
