But it should be.

The reason I donate (as someone who doesn't live close enough to have/take advantage of season tickets) is that I believe in paying it forward. Donations of fans/alumni before me helped create a talented football team that made my college experience very enjoyable. I feel obligated to give so students today can (one day, hopefully) have a similar experience.

Idk, I just think college football should be about the students (and the rest of the university). I get that donating money gives you influence (and to be clear - I do NOT donate enough to deserve a shred of influence), but I still think that the students/players/university members are key stakeholders. If the lights need to be replaced (as I understand they do) and LED lights are the current 'best standard' out there, then let's do it. If kids these days want it to feel like a rave, then lets fuckin rave.

Correct. I have continually countered this view in the Faculty Senate. No academic programs are being impacted by this expenditure. And I have it on good authority (trust me, this comes from the top) that the normal operation would have simply been to reinvest the money by default, something we had done year over year. While any money can be viewed as hypothetically used for some future effort, that's too abstract to hold much meaning.

you are very careful with your words and it is much appreciated haha

Definitely agree. We have a built in aspect that we can use these for, unlike a lot of schools which just will do a light show / flash the lights for a TD. Our biggest thing we are known for at this point literally says Exit Light in the lyrics. It makes even more sense than other schools getting LED lights.

If not then we did a horrible job in terms of researching/planning. Replacing non-LED with LED should be a simple and straightforward way to increase energy efficiency and therefore reduce ongoing costs. There's a reason everyone, including the DOE, recommends people use LEDs for their own home

Yes, there are a lot of known knowns, and known unknowns...

100% His presentation was spot on and we did what we needed to get Franklin, however I dont know the inner workings of the school, but that presentation was 5-10 years later. There was nothing in it that most big time fans of college football didnt know (aside from exact numbers).

The whole funding of football has been really confusing from a guy known to make money, im not saying fire him for that, just that its been a faux pas on what otherwise would have been a stellar resume at VT.

Yet somehow we had the funds to hire Franklin and fund the NIL payments this year.

So Whit deserves SOME credit for pulling that rabbit out of a hat.

Also, hasn't VT won some basketball accolades under Whit?

Yes, Fuente and Pry turned out to be bad hires, but Whit has also done some solid work under challenging conditions for the athletic department. Buzz Williams was hired with some clever creative negotiation, and Kenny Brooks was a good hire.

1 - We're talking about a college soooo 20 year old college students are in fact a large part of the market.

2 - fixing the cell/data infrastructure is likely far more than $2MM one time payment. Its also not an easy problem to solve and is a problem in ~most~ stadium venues especially those located outside of metro areas.
