I think he was assistant WR coach last year
It likely has to have some type of heating and ventilation system, even if that system is designed to only maintain a minimum setpoint to keep things from freezing, etc. It really does not make sense to fully condition a space of that size unless it is frequently at full occupancy and intended for a stable environment. For intermittent athletic training, minimum heat and proper ventilation would be typical.
I dont want led lights in lane
I knew the building didn't have air conditioning, but I was surprised it didn't have heating either.
I could see why putting in AC would be too expensive, but it wouldn't have cost them that much to throw a couple of infrared gas heaters in there.
Dave, while I really don't care much about what they're doing in lane other than keeping up with what Franklin thinks we need, I do agree with you about the strobe effect and bright light flashes causing migraines. As one who shares your ocular migraines myself, it is tough to deal with, but as you say, 20 minutes of feeling like shit and then whatever headache comes with it is something we'd definitely rather forego. I just get the aura in one eye and the headache in the other side of my head, and I can speak, but it is no fun at all. Luckily, though, with all the pre-headache stuff I get, my headaches are really mild and usually only noticeable if I sneeze or cough. Lucky for sure, but I definitely empathize.
...if any of you have done the magic eye 3d images thing...
Never have I ever been able to see anything in any of those. I think they're just a prank, and don't contain any deeper images at all.

I haven't and I wouldn't be opposed to something that everyone knows is going to happen, but that is different than the flashing lights after a TD, which can happen at any point of the game. My biggest issue is people walking around when a random light show happens and not everyone is prepared for it.
Really out of left field, but if any of you have done the magic eye 3d images thing where you have to 'relax your eyes and look through the image', do that while watching the Franklin clip. His black shirt blends in so well with the background that all you see is 2 floating Franklin heads and 4 hands in between the logos behind. It's really weird.
Interesting to see Cam Phillips listed as an assistant WR coach. I think this is his first coaching stop, unless I'm missing something, so I'm surprised he isn't starting out in an analyst role.
Really loved him comments. I was rooting for him as HC until the end and I'll be rooting even harder for him as DC.
I think there is something to what you're saying here. It will be interesting to see how it plays out in the long run, but it makes sense to me that Franklin and his staff to run the Football athletic department and let Whit handle everything else.
From a budget and revenue generating standpoint, I think football does need to have a certain degree of independence. And it does seem that is the plan going forward. They are changing Merryman to a football-only facility and have already hired and will continue to hire a large staff specific to football (is the football staff now larger than the rest of the AD combined?). They pushing football-centric improvements like heating in the Beamer Barn and getting more office space.
VT is lucky to be able to hire Franklin, but I think Franklin is relishing at the power-grab opportunity at VT and the monetary support provided by the BoV. This dynamic should get VT football back to being relevant at a national level pretty quickly. Whether Franklin should have this much power is a fair question. I don't think he will ever have to answer to Babcock, and instead he has a direct line to the University President, the BoV, and the VA Governor. It is a little bit crazy to think about, but Franklin is essentially an appointed political figure running a major tax-payer supported agency (but also probably the highest state-run revenue generator other than taxation).
Good lord there are some whiny old geezers amongst us ๐๐. Great move Hokies!
To be fair over the last 10 years Tech football has been so bad that I don't blame anyone for needing to be reminded to cheer. Those students don't know what good football looks like because our administration didn't care enough to give it to them.
It's sometimes/many times very difficult (maybe impossible) for a "star" to accept a "team" role......ego is important, but the key item to handle......the best teams, imo, have "stars" who mesh and are team players. I believe Pry is that "star" who wants to succeed as a team. He's a man of character. Pry's comments about coming back and wanting to be a part of bringing back pride to Tech got my juices flowing. How many of us really thought he'd come back? I'm thrilled.
I was like a half second from getting a Pic of that. I'll get him on the podium
I loved that he flashed the VT sign during the walk out and then took the former world champ down right away. It was perfect Hitman!
Helloooooo Stifler's mom.
Gotcha, that certainly makes sense and I 'm not surprised that those are *capabilities* of the facility, but I am surprised that heating was not included. As someone who has spent at least some time working in a warehouse, I know that it's typical for those facilities to have heat but not air conditioning, and that's the configuration I would have expected for a building of that size.
ETA: I thought a part of the 'simulation of weather' was the possibility to simulate weather in the South or CA ahead of a bowl game, or other away games. I'm pretty sure I've heard of other practice facilities where they can increase/decrease the temperature to simulate conditions they are going to be traveling to.
It isn't air conditioned either. It was designed that way to save money and simulate weather conditions for practice. They can open a LOT of windows for good cross ventilation when it is hot, and those same windows and roof design give it a little solar heating in winter.
"Already signed his termination papers" sounds like the decision was not his at that time.
Good news is that years of 2 beers may make them ready to still do a good podcast while three beers deep
As promised:
FYI 28sec of dead air:
Apparently, Shearer didn't get the wear black memo ๐

I'm with you. I know he ruffled a lot of feathers, but he was a key part of the community.
