If you're in a meeting with one of your superiors and your phone goes off, the person holding said meeting has every right to chew you out for not having the conscientiousness to silence your phone before coming in and sitting down.

A fine attitude to have, but not realistic in 2014, sorry. This was Weavers attitude, and you saw the results. Shaming people into giving lest they be "bad Hokies" or whatever such nonsense is an ineffective way to raise money.
If I was going to give money to someone out of obligation, I would give it to the actual university that educated me, not the bloody sports teams.
It's so refreshing that Whit understands this and has demonstrated right out of the gate that he means business. The weaver model was fine for its time, but that time had past.

Really? I've been a part of some coaching changes. My high school soccer coach, for example, was changed mid-season and the first day some kid was slacking just running through the motions. Coach chewed his ass and sent him on some suicides for the rest of practice. The rest of us felt embarrassed for how the slacker was giving the wrong impression to the coach, not the other way around.
If I was on the basketball team and Trevor's phone rang I would've thought two things:
Prior to ass chewing: "Who the phuck?!"
After ass chewing: "Get it the phuck together Trevor! First phucking meeting and you got the coach yelling. Great first impression."
If anyone on the team thought differently than this when Trevor's phone rang then they are probably a bit "soft" as well and need some serious conditioning, aka, attitude adjustment.
I like this guy. I've heard more about the Hokie Club from him in the past couple weeks than I've heard about it since I've graduated and was in school.
I know my company matches charitable contributions to schools and some charities. I'll have to see how it works.
There is apparently a referral program thing. Don't really know how good it is.
Very good except, it wasn't the soldiers that lost Vietnam, it was the politicians and the chattering class.

Even so, if you're going in to an important meeting (and let's be honest, did any of the players think that the very first meeting with their new coach wasn't important) you should have your phone off or on silent. It's common courtesy, whether you're a basketball player, a student in a lecture, or a employee for some company. If your phone does go off, you shouldn't be surprised if you get called out for it, because it's rude.
It's clear that he didn't like Buzz from the start, because if he really got so upset by being called out for interrupting an important meeting, then he really is soft. That's life, sometimes you're going to make a mistake and get chewed out. If he really can't deal with that, I can't see how he can play competitive sports at all.
I agree that he shouldn't quit over getting yelled at. And I played sports as well and got yelled at plenty of times but I can't imagine I'd have a good first impression of a coach if the first time I met him he yelled at one of my teammates because his phone rang.
Well as I took it his phone just rang during the meeting. I don't think he was texting or anything. I guess we don't know.
Why the heck should Buzz sit down with one player individually before the first meeting with the team? I am not sure I have heard of a worse idea. That would set up the idea that TT was something special and deserved special attention from the coach. The players should all the be same.

# | Bitter blog - Coaches put Hokies through the wringer at early morning conditioning drills Daylight Savings Time was always a bit of a soulcrusher, though. It's starting to get lighter and a tad less frigid and then *BAM* right back into the freezing darkness again.
I say Maroon Pants, Jacket, Shirt, Vest, shoes, orange tie, kerchief, white gloves.
Tuff is tuff, but leadership demands that Buzz sit down with Thompson before the team meeting. Trevor showed the most potential on the team this year. He needed to add strength and learn from a good coach.
Here's my opinion: Your coach is god to you. You don't talk about him to his face or in public. If you're frustrated, sure you can talk about it one on one with another person, or address him in a mature way. Think about the trouble JJ had this season with discipline that led to an extended media circus. Buzz just cut that off at the start.
And the sleeping giant stretches out its arms and yawns as its eyes flicker open to view the new morning.......
