I would also like to say that this was a very well written opinion piece and I applaud your effort and research, it is very well done.
I still wonder about how our team would look with Greenberg as coach (Montrezl and Rob Brown), but JJ has had a rough start to his head coaching career. He has lost those players from Greenbergs time and has lost players of his own. Right now he has a freshman starting at PG in the ACC and has no backup, We are missing two double digit scorers (Smith and B. Emelogu) and have two walk-ons as key contributors (spot starters). I do agree that these first two years have been disappointing from Johnson but I think we should allow him one more year with his recruits before we start all over. I do not think he will last as our coach but can we really expect him to have a good record with the team we are currently fielding? I say give him one season more, if these transfering issues continue then let him go immediately and try to get a bigger coaching name to put us back on the landscape. Our talent can be competitive but they need direction.

# | The College Football Arms Race: Examining Athletic Department Revenues I agree. I love the mentality of VT. Blue collar, lunch pail, putting in the hard work are all things I believe in and love. But no matter how much VT spends it will never be able to spend as much as the big programs and will ALWAYS be the underdog. We simply cannot compete with them that way. Reading the interview from Ballein, we aren't even competing with the worst teams in the ACC financially.
The point is while a large budget VT athletics is both substantially lower than Academics and a hell of a lot lower than what other schools with worse programs spend. *cough* LOLUVA *cough* But the returns that VT has gotten from having a nationally recognized team have also been quite substantial. As long as that proves true then spending on athletics is smart fiscal planning.

Of course, they are precisely in the best location in the country to do that. Not much of that happening in rural southwest VA unfortunately.
Tennessee will probably stick with Locker, Dalton certainly will be fine with Cincy next year. Terrelle Pryor is fast so Oakland likes him. Tampa and Houston seem like legit landing places but I think Houston picks a QB earlier than LT will go.
El Barto as Cupcake Kid. Something to think about.
I could see Tyrod going to Arizona given the VT connection there with the coach and the need they have out there. I don't think they will want to take a QB in the draft and focus on skill position playmakers.

I don't know what it has been historically but I don't think it has been breaking the bank in any year. I also think that the recent O'Bannon case has affected how players view their money. Whether they believe that they are owed merchandising returns or not I think the case has shifted the perception that they need to financially support the university.

My experience is that most college teams use rep maxes, which is to do a lower weight multiple times and then use a formula to calculate the max for safety reasons. God help this poor kid's rotator cuff when he gets older.

Even with a focus on alumni and fans in general, it would seem that something from the boys that moved up would be expected. Do they know about the Hokie Club? Do they get material, or a briefing on the way out the door? We see their faces on the field at practices and at the games (and their names on buildings), it is surprising that they wouldn't be regular donors.
Fair, but the starters have respectively 2, 2, 2, 4, and 4 years experience iirc. They just hired Mike Munchak as a new o-line coach, so they might try to coach up young guys rather than drafting new talent.
Once again, safety. HUGE concern. That guy spotting him wasn't exactly carrying 20+ pounds.

Teams possibly needing a Qb in a year. Hmmmm. Every team with a new coach that won't spend a high draft pick on a qb. Bucs, Tennessee, texans (if they go Clowney), raiders are always a threat to someone's career, Arizona. I would imagine dalton only has one more shot in cincy. To much talent around him to be one and done every year. Just to throw a few out there.
Yeah, I wouldn't think successor there. But I think it would be a good stable low pressure situation for him to develop. I imagine him moving on from there to start else where.
I'm a Packers fan as well, and it is an intriguing proposition. I'm wondering what will happen with Flynn. He played pretty well after the Wallace/Tolzien debacle. If he stays, the QB position is pretty solidified for the time being, but if not, Logan might be a good option to back up Rodgers. As much as I love the idea of Logan eventually taking the reigns and bringing a few more Lombardi trophies home, I think we're still at least 3-4 years away from drafting Rodgers' successor.
Welp, Matt Miller, B/R's draft guy says a scout has asked LT if he'd be open to moving to TE. Imagine that will be a question a lot of scouts ask.
