How did JR Collins* go from arguably the Hokies' best defensive player at the beginning of the season to one of the least talked about guys on the team by the season's end? Was there a significant drop off in his level of play or were teams scheming to take him out of the picture because of his early-season success?

*Edited to the correct player

Wouldn't you think that even in Leal wins the job that Ford or Durkin ends up #2? I would think that one of those kids is going to get some game action in 2014 to better prepare for 2015. Not guaranteed that who ever that is wins the job in 2015, but I can't see them both getting shirted next year. Now if one of them WINS the job and Leal stays, then I think the other one obviously redshirts.

For me it was always the smell of the office. The transit to the office I could deal with, weather I could deal with, the people were fine but when I entered the office and got the smell of it in my nose I immediately just wanted to turn around. A lot of times I would and just go get a coffee for another 10 minutes of freedom. Maybe that's just me.

Now I own my own business so I am proud of going, but I always imagine my employees feel the same way.

That's assuming Bud doesn't bring Gray along with him. IF Bud leaves it will most definitely be for a HC job...and as the HC he'll be afforded the opportunity to hand pick his own staff. I'm sure he's well aware of the value in Gray and will want to bring him along.

I am against this. Invites too much subjectivity. The idea of divisions is that they break down the conference teams into an even spectrum of difficulty for every team. Obviously that's not always the case because like Clemson and FSU this year they were the best team. However, the fact that FSU beat them in the regular season should mean that they don't need to face them again. Only time that would happen is when you play the same team from the other division both times. I am in favor of ditching the cross division rivals though.

Can't say I really like this monetary nuclear arms race for coaches/coordinators in "amateur" sports. It does make me laugh to see how much UVA paid for Tom O'Brien ($600k), Jon Tenuta ($500k), and Steve Fairchild ($465k) to coach a team that was winless in conference play.

They all need a raise but I think Gray needs a serious bump in pay. Secondary is our strength every year and he IMO is top candidate to replace Bud as DC if Bud moves on or replaces Beamer after retirement. He should be at minimum the highest paid DB coach in the land.

I did always think that the productivity of our receivers this year was more from nifty play design rather than sheer talent and ability to get separation one-on-one. Glad to see I'm not completely crazy...

Hopefully next year we'll have some better playmakers/more experience in our current players to help support whoever is slinging the rock next season.

that's interesting. If he could play FS or whip, why not rover? More about someone else's ability to play rover / lack of suitedness to FS/whip than about something in Sheggog's game that makes him not the best rover candidate?

thoughts on why Loeffler didn't come back to play action after the one failure? What was he doing differently after Leal came in that pushed that to the side? I'm assuming he wouldn't have given up on something so promising after only one try if LT had stayed in. Do you think Loeffler was a little thrown off when LT went out, not quite prepared to play his backup? Similar to Beamer's comments about the backup needing to be ready to play, the play caller has to be ready for that as well.

Thanks French. I am already looking forward to spring practice and the 2014 campaign. Looking forward to your generous reviews and explanations. I feel my understanding of the game (never played) has grown ten fold this year. Thanks again for your efforts.
