A day later and that play is still bothering me. I wish the rest of the team would have come to LT's defense and gone after that dude.
However, what bothers me the most was the announcers defending the player and the cheap shot he took. It was excessive and the penalty perfectly described the offense, "unnecessary roughness".
I don't mind tough players and hard hitting but QBs take too many hits like that when they are standing still after releasing the ball. They cannot get out of the way to avoid getting crushed. Lowering the crown of the helmet is too common. I think what got LT is the helmet came up into his facemask causing his head to snap back.
I do... I mean what did he really expect from him? I think it kind put Leal in a weird spot. I live in NC and I went home to visit my family and I had the opportunity to see the game with family and friends, but for me to open the Roanoke times paper and read and see Beamer disappointed in Leal it kind of surprised me a little, because I've never heard Beamer use those kind of words before regarding a player's play on the field. I mean he stuck by Logan when he was having some pretty bad games even when we handed games over to teams that we should have beat so what was he seeing in Leal that we didn't see? If he wants to open the qb competition up this spring that's fine with me I think that's the way it should be. But this is a point where I think we will see more of our backups get in games towards the end and get some snaps in besides handing the ball off. I know this year we didn't have that kind of opportunity because games were so close this year. But it might help a little with experience.
I think one of Frank Beamer's greatest attributes is also one of his biggest weaknesses. He's a nice guy. I love his compassion and desire to do things the right way. He tries hard to respect everyone and everything. But he just doesn't have that killer instinct. I love Frank and he is great for VT. I truly believe that he will be one of the greatest coaches in the history of college football never to win a National Championship.
No, I don't count him being the winningest coach as above average. He beats bad teams. You play at least 5-6 sub par teams in a season, you beat them - great. You do what's expected of you. He does not coach above average teams. He coaches average teams that appear to be good. An above average team brings home championships, bowl game victories, wins over highly ranked opponents about half the time. Frank Beamer does not.
It's sad that people can't move past the "Frank Beamer deserves it" thing. He earned it to a point, but at some time, that has to end, and we have to move on. Why waste seasons on a coach because he deserves it? Sure, he may have earned himself a few years, but zero national championships over 27 years really isn't deserving of much in my mind.
Why would the NCAA limit the number of strength and conditioning coaches?
I think it's safe to say that jerk won't be invited to my birthday celebration this year.

Great post. I am eager for the off-season to see the Hokies continue to take steps in the right direction of where the program wants to be. I hope to see my Hokies climb back to the top of the mountain.
I think you make a good point, and I'm not sure any of the incoming QBs are that similar to Leal. For that reason, I don't think Leal will start. He'll be listed at the top of the depth chart going into spring and he'll have a chance to win the job, but I think Loeffler is going to build his offense around the talents he has in the younger guys and unless Leal is able to beat them at their own game he won't end up taking first team snaps by the end of fall camp.

I think that many people (including some on here) who say that we will lose 6 games next year forget that we have a relatively easy schedule with Miami ecu and gt at home and then some cupcakes and then wake forest replacing Maryland, also I don't see us losing to Duke twice in a row so I could easily see us going 9-3 or 10-2 with possible losses to Osu, Unc and Pitt
So...are any of the incoming QBs similar to Leal? I fear Loeffler having to scheme around Leal for 1 year, then having to readjust that scheme the year after, and two years from now we're still talking about a first year quarterback and folks needing to adjust to the NEW new scheme.
A jump to the left, a step to right, put your hands on your hips, and bring your knees in tight. But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives me insane..... Ok, I'm done with references for the day..

# | Bitter blog - Five thoughts the day after the Hokies' loss to UCLA in the Sun Bowl Yes, we've got some pretty good looking recruits coming in but let's face the facts, they're going to be true freshmen next year. Some of them will probably end up red-shirting, some will boom while others will bust. The simple fact is that one year of new coaches bringing in new players is not enough to right our ship just yet. We'll have frustrations next year just like we had this year but we'll likely have some of the same exhilarating moments we had. I'm unfortunately one of those that tends to overreact to these things (you should see my hand and my fridge after yesterday....) but I don't think we've seen enough after only a year to judge Lefty & Co.'s impact.
All that being said, if they keep up recruiting like they did this year, those 10 wins will roll around again sooner rather than later. Above all else #KeepCalmAndGoHokies!!
I thought the same thing watching Leal-he seemed to get the dreaded 'happy feet' and took a long time to get the ball off. I was impressed with some of his throws, and I give him credit for walking into a tough situation.
But, we need a good/great spring and it's exciting to know that Ford will be participating with the other candidates.
I think Loeffler will go with the whomever is the best for the team.
Injuries plagued us yesterday for the most part.
Although I must admit, given all the film on UCLA's QB, why did our blitzers not learn to break down in front of him until the second half?
This was pretty inexcusable to me. How many big runs did we give up because of what appeared to be a refusal to accept reality that he really was that good a runner? Either Foster missed on that prep, which seems highly improbable, or our starting D didn't internalize what Foster was telling them.
Having so much top-shelf talent injured on the sidelines has hampered this entire season though. I'm not going to sweat any of the losses, including this one. I'm proud of what they did accomplish, I'm excited by what I'm seeing from Loeffler, Moorehead and Grimes, and I am pumped by what's shaping up to be an epic recruiting class.
While I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't win 10 next year, I won't be surprised if we do win that or more. There is excitement and hunger on the team and in our coaching staff. And while we've had that before, we now have an Offensive staff that can focus that energy.
I don't regret this year a bit. I regret the last 5 when it was painfully obvious where the program was heading. And while I think Beamer was contemptuous of fans who pointed out the obvious (particularly when he said something like "if they think they can do better why aren't they coaching?" - as if that's a defense of failure), I am more than willing to give him and his new coaches several years to see their vision through.
Based on what I've seen this year, I think the chances are high for fans to enjoy an offense that doesn't require the QB to make something happen with his legs when the first (only) read is busted.

But the announcers were crap. Calling the players by the wrong name and inventing first names a few time.
They were giving Coleman's stats once and said he was 5 foot 7 inches and 181 yards.
I swear they must have shared a naked cheerleader, a bong and bourbon shots at halftime.
That's a good post. I believe in CFB and will give the new coaches their due time...I also think they will do great things for the O.

We have seen that good coaching can turn our patchwork team into one that can win 8 games; that's better than most in college football. But you can only use the "everything is new" argument for a year. In year 2, you expect improvement, though it may not be huge nor should that be expected or demanded. I think our record will probably still be about 8-4, and I think some attrition on D but improvement on O will be the reason. As long as we're improving demonstrably, there is no reason to trash the coaches or demand heads to roll. We won't see real dividends for 2-3 years probably (and I'm patient enough), but this offseason definitely is important. Keep the existing guys learning and get the new guys acclimated to college ball. Without a solid footing going forward, there will be problems, but if they get off the ground running (pun intended), things will be fine.
Frank Beamer has earned the right to finish his contract. Barring something illegal being dragged into the light, he's done nothing to warrant being let go before his contract expires. After that, yeah we need to find someone else, someone to light a fire under the program and get us to that next level.
