Well, we have a good punter! It could probably be argued that Beamer will have a good QB. I don't expect BOTH Ford and Durkin to bust...I think one of them will pass Leal on the depth chart. Don't forget about Motely

I think we will start the season with Leal and debate the QB play all year until we finally turn it over to Ford or Durdin.

Beamer has always said if he has a good QB and Kicker, he would keep coaching. Well, he's got neither next year. This is the crossroads of the program, it will be a struggle to make a bowl next year.
okay first off I completely disagree with beamer always liking the spread. He wants to pound the rock. He's said that for decades.
secondly, beamer is a defensive minded coach. He played defense. He's always coached with that mindset. He wasn't the coach responsible for recruiting poorly on offense. Our defensive recruiting has been brilliant for years. We may not bring in the 5* recruits left and right but we have a system and we get guys who fit the system. We've had a top 20 defense forever. Our offense, on the other hand, hasn't had any direction or identity for the last 7+ years. That is where Loeffler is trying to make changes. The offensive staff appears to be recruiting with a purpose.
This season Loeffler was trying to solve a 5000 piece puzzle with 12 pieces. He had a pretty serious up hill battle to fight. He still has an up hill battle. I think it's going to take 2 or 3 full recruiting classes to get all the pieces together.
Look at our offensive line (or, more specifically, what French pointed out about said line earlier this year). For starters, taking a grand total of what, 2 OLinemen in 2 or 3 years = problems. Taking talented athletes and just expecting them to fit right in at WR, instead of recruiting actual receivers has held us back as well. This year, we've got a class of 5 OLinemen who are in the same mold: lean guys who can move laterally. We've recruited receivers who have played the position in high school and have proven to be playmakers. We've recruited 2 quarterbacks who are good passers in high school, not just athletes who can also sorta throw. Toss a couple of very talented running backs into the mix, and you've got a system-specific recruiting plan. THAT'S how you're supposed to recruit at a BCS school.

# | My 2 cents on the current state of this program (Long Read) I really like Vanessa, she's smart, she passes well and sees the floor, but the big thing for me is she doesnt demand the ball or tries to force the issue, but scores very easily when called upon
Think about how much shifting around we've done to fill positions. Former QBs being put as RB or WR, TE moving all over the line. There's no identity there. For years, we relied on a mobile QB to cover deficiencies elsewhere. We settled into the "draw it up in the dirt" mentality for too long and ended up with insufficient depth and O-linemen capable of asserting the run game.
I think we got outplayed and out coached! I know in the grand scheme of the game it wouldn't have made much difference but how can we find a niche for Parker on this game yet we don't play Mangus until the last minute(at RB). I look at his runs compared to Wright and Coleman and he's more athletic! I guess I for get the fact our defense forgot how to tackle as well!
I enjoyed seeing Wright and Parker get so many touches finally. As important as recruiting is, keeping young talent around is just as important.
It was a tough game to watch but I will also have great memories of LT3 and this years seniors! Good luck to them! I'll put in a plug for the Women's basketball team - they are having a great run, look entirely different from last year's team. Monet Tellier and Uju Ugoka are playing at a really high level. Come to games and cheer them !

Not trying to be argumentative, but how is Beamer not recruiting for a specific system? He has always liked the spread offense. So what is the difference between how Cutliffe is recruiting vs Beamer? Just curious. I'm not really an X's and O's guy either.
The fact that we held them to 13 points, while they're currently lighting up a ranked SEC team makes me feel a little bit better. Cutcliffe has also been recruiting for a specific system for 5 years. We haven't, so our class may have ranked higher in terms of overall talent, but not within any sort of coherent identity (at least on offense).
They are laying the wood to aTm. I am loving it. They may have scored more in that half than we have in several bowl games total in recent years.
Can't disagree with that, but ACC is doing horrible again in bowls. Cutliffe is doing a great job coaching with what he has. Just saying. Would love if we would be better. Sigh.

A team that has never had a recruiting class as good as the Hokies might get a better bowl win than the Hokies have had in a decade plus...
That does not make me feel good
How about this:
1. Let's not judge Leal on today's performance. He has had limited snaps all year and was thrown into the fire against a top flight defense.
2. The spring and fall will reveal a lot. Patience. Let's eagerly watch this play out and have faith that Lefty and Co. will determine the best man to lead this team.
Loeffler doesn't strike me as a 2-QB system type of OC...and I think French said a while ago that he would be surprised if Ford didn't already have a playbook..
Not knocking Beamer overall for what he's done for our program, but over the last dozen years or more it has looked like Beamer hasn't prepared enough for bowl games. His record overall now is 9-13. Granted 21 straight is better than all but one program, so that's the up side to it. But we always seem to lose one or two and then win one. Usually it's not a BCS bowl game that we win as well. We do play higher ranked/skilled teams though. But that also being said perhaps they should be more prepared by now. I wasn't expecting a whole lot for this one though and losing Logan was big. Just hate to see us break down as much as we did today. Looking forward to see how the offense matures over the next few years with the newer classes.
well written! I was afraid this was going to be a doom and gloom type of article before reading and was pleasantly surprised. It's a disappointing end to a tough season. It's an even more disappointing end to a career for one of the greatest Hokies ever. Logan Thomas may not have been the best QB we've had but he was a great Hokie. And a big reason he has all of those school records is because of the sheer volume of playing time he has. But from what I could see, he laid everything on the line for VT on EVERY play. He did what he was asked to do and for the last 2 years he hasn't had much help to do it. He never wavered. Tyrod Taylor was a much better QB IMO, but LT3 really was a true Hokie through and through.
I love my Hokies and this loss hurts. I hate that it was such a large margin of victory. Blowout losses hurt the most :(
Next year Andy, you'll have to change your name to sweet as things turn better.
