These days, I'd say the FSU-style offense is the way to go!
I believe it was because the two schools they wanted turned them down and one of the members on the Sun Bowl Committee was a VT alum. He suggested that the committee send us an invite and we accepted.

Man I don't want to go to the Sun bowl....I would much rather go to a bowl closer to Blacksburg so we can have
as many fans there as possible. El Paso is just way too far...especially for students. But then again I am really
glad we made into a bowl game and the Sun bowl is better than no bowl.
I dig it...Maryland game sucked. Especially with Senior Day, and the Terps sneaking out the back door forever after punking the Hokies.
I guess my perception of hardest loss to stomach is different. The Duke loss is hard for me to stomach because I don't get how the Hokies lost it, while the Maryland game just hurts really bad.
Agreed. So many times that season, we had come-from-behind wins because of clutch defensive plays from him. 9-picks!

We still have winning records against Duke & BC, but UMD retook a lead against us with that loss. Duke & BC have always played us tough, but Maryland usually rolled over for us the last 5 meetings. Plus it was Senior Day at Lane.

I would like to see an offensive-minded coach from an established program. Or Bud, but only because Bud says he'd run an Oregon-style offense. I would like Bud to be dual hatted as DC, like Pete Carroll was.
I've always wondered about Malzahn's offense as well. I think it's natural to look at the success at Auburn and wonder why Lefty wasn't successful there.
They run the same plays over and over again and have counters/trick plays when the defense stacks the box. I remember Cam Newton saying that he didn't call plays, he just said a number in the huddle.
The way it's been explained to me is that Malzahn's offense is relatively easy to install and effective but not effective when playing against a great defense (It'll get to a bowl game but not the NC...but I guess that's been proven wrong after this weekend).
Also, I've heard recruits are turned off by his offense because it does a poor job of preparing kids for the NFL.

I respect your opinion. But for me, the hardest loss to take is still the Duke game. One reason is, the Hokies could have lost to Merryland and BC and still gotten to the ACCCG...if they had beaten Duke.
Also, the Duke game really did hinge on just one play or two. If LT doesn't take the pick in the endzone, or CJ makes that one ugly FG, that goes to OT at worst. At Lane, the way the D was playing, I like their chances in OT. The defense was really kicking Duke's ass...especially in the 2nd half of that game. The Hokies also clobbered them in yardage, and TOP. Just mind-boggling, really...how they lost that game.
His receivers were really good. They used their bodies better than our WRs did.
Ford looks good. He is accurate and throws his receivers open. He could use some arm strength but that will come in the next few years. Keep in mind we are used to seeing LT throw who has a howitzer of an arm.
I am really excited this kid will be here in January. 8 months of strength and conditioning with Gentry and 8 months with Leoffler will be huge for him come fall camp and him competing for the job.

I think this season was a step in the right direction, with lots of youth on both sides of the ball stepping up.
The seniors on this team contributed less than the freshmen, for all sorts of reasons. From Coles' conditioning, to Exum's rehab, to Journell's dismissal, the seniors as a whole disappointed. The fact that we played so many freshmen shows a lack of preparation by other upperclassmen who rarely saw the field. It wasn't that long ago that we'd see a guy like Painter or Corey Fuller play only his senior year and be rock solid the whole year. This year we had the opposite.
It was a little disappointing seeing so many freshmen and walk-ons out there against Alabama; just goes to show how bare the cupboard was. The new guys on the other hand, took advantage of the playing time they got, and were all over the place. And these guys will get better with more time in the system.
Recruiting is up, the offense IS better (notice the longer drives, less costly turnovers, better game planning) and the Defense will always be good to great. I'm excited to see the Offensive line borrow from the Def Line with Alston Smith and Watt Teller switching this year. I have faith that Grimes will get the line fixed over time, and that Loeffler will get the running game working.
For the biggest positional change next year, I think whoever wins the QB job will put up numbers similar to Logan, but not necessarily have a better arm. An improvement in the running game would do a lot to help out the new QB, as would better execution of the veer option. I can see QB's sharing time next year based on their strengths, as Loeffler had some match-up successes this year.
Special teams needs to get better all the way around. This is the one thing I hope Frank passes onto Shane, the sooner the better.
One the whole, a ten-win season is achievable again next year with no FSU or Clemson on the schedule (at least until the ACCCG.) Lets hope these guys make the most of their offseason and get to work.

Well that's the year they "graduated" or "left" the team. Like Logan, for example, his last season will be the 2013 season but he will graduate in 2014, if he hasn't already. Anyway that's when he will leave the team.

Isn't this kind of specious reasoning, though? Aren't all offenses "not effective when playing against a great defense?"
In general, if I'm trying to evaluate an offensive system, I'm more concerned with how consistently it executes against most defenses than I am the rare times I encounter a "great defense" right?
