This is actually pretty spectacular. I listened to the ESPNU College Football podcast on Friday with Matt Barre and Ivan Maisel. Maisel and Barre wouldn't even talk about the game, because it was of no interest. So, it will be interesting what they'll say on the podcast this week. Probably still nothing.
I agree we definitely need someone to step up at WR and make a play. I am excited to see Joel Caleb get some playing time this week since he is off double secret suspension. The D was beast.
Mark May also went to Pitt.
One more point : (not my original idea; saw this somewhere else too) We need to recruit WRs for our WR positions. Catching the ball should be second nature to a WR by the time he steps on college campus. Taking athletes and hoping that sprint speed turns into receiving ability is not a great strategy. Sometimes it works (Fuller), but more often than not, it doesnt turn into a polished product, imho (Davis, Roberts, Knowles, etc). Something to consider before we chew out Knowles and Co.
I think in the all access show, Coach Wiles was doing part of the ST coaching. At least I think he was the coach with the "Scoop and Score" on a blocked kick behind the LOS comment.
I don't think its so much that the guards are setting the line as they're (Farris and Miller) more experienced at Center than wang, but are physically more suited to guard than he is. I think I remember reading that Wang still has the responsibility of setting the line, but Farris and Miller are letting him know what they see and helping out when necessary.
Easy on Brent.
From the Teel Blog:
Their 99 gave us a lot of problems in pass protection, Saban said. Pushed the pocket. We were soft. Didn't have a solid pocket. Quarterback didn't feel comfortable. Timing in the passing game wasn't what it needed to be in terms of how much time we had to throw it, how much time we had to get open. Those are the kind of things I think we really need to improve on.
We didn't handle their pressure or movement very well. We didn't get much movement when they didn't move. Those things all add up to being not so good.
The reason Gayle didn't get any tackles is because he was getting double teams and still giving enormous pressure. Enough pressure that Saban pointed him out.
No need to fight y'all. But I would agree with the bit about the zone read. I wouldn't mind getting away from that.
What I saw:
VT had more total yards than Alabama. Edmunds was better than Yeldon. If Knowles and Coles didn't play like "hot garbage," then LT3 would have looked better than McCarron. The best D-line in VT history. Some damn good Secondary play from the starters. (TD was on backup Frye).
I think it's Time to Return to Mascot Mock!
People are getting pretty carried away with the downvoting, for sure. I think some of the negativity is coming from your repeated assertion that you're the only person thinking rationally and some of the comments read as being very snarky. Let's everyone watch tone and realize that we are all cheering for the same team, we all want to see them succeed, and we all bleed Orange and Maroon.
Only if he does it in the first half, I want Edmunds and all of our defensive starters, with the possible exception of Kendall/Faycon and Tremble to be sitting the entirety the second half against WCU. Depending on how Logan and the receivers look, in the first half, I might want them to get some extra reps in the 3rd. Possibly rotate through all 3 deep of the WRs throughout the game and sit Logan and most of the O-Line starters early in the 3rd.
I saw trench warfare that should be able to handle everyone the Hokies play this regular season. The passing and special teams just have to not screw over the offense
AJ definitely needs to improve the hang time, but we're still solid there unlike in '11.
Upvote for your first point. Hell yeah. Didn't expect that at all.
Love him, and everyone else is right, he was close to breaking that one. Just saw it again on the replay like a minute ago on ESPNU. He almost tackled Jones on his KR TD, too. But the guy got away.
"While ... agreeing with everybody is the way to get turkey legs on here, I'll pass."
Your first comment was an entire paragraph from the original post, followed by "this." While I don't think it's worthy of a downvote, I don't see your revolutionary opinion anywhere
Quick Hits:
1. VT won the battle in the trenches against Alabama. Who expected that?
2. The difference between LT and McCarron last night was Bama's receivers are better. The seem pass that hit knowles in the facemask was a killer, could have been a TD. Perfect deep ball from Logan.
3. This is the best D-line VT has ever had. 4 sacks against Alabama.
4. The first punt TD was AJ's fault, out-kicked the coverage. (I guess you could argue the coverage has to be better, maybe putting starters in that can get down the field faster.)
5. Coles needs to improve. Stanford and Meyer (when he gets healthy) should replace Knowles on the depth chart.
Thanks, but I could really care less. When recycling jokes that aren't funny anymore and agreeing with everybody is the way to get turkey legs on here, I'll pass. Discussion boards are for sharing opinions. If everybody had the same opinion, this place would be useless. Funny thing is, I'm posting actual facts about the game and I'm getting downvoted because it doesn't align with the hopeless optimism of some people. I love VT. I get animated for games. If we play well, I'll be just as excited as you. But I'm a very rational person and until I'm given reason to believe otherwise, I'm going to temper my expectations for our passing game.
They're definitely harder to get especially when you get a lead and are trying to play the entire roster. Agree we need solid effort in all phases.
I just absolutely love your avatar. Turkey leg!
Going back to 03-04 I counted 12 shutouts with I think all but 2 of those at home and 2 of the 12 we gave to LOLUVA!
Agreed, for the most part. I'll take my Hokies any way I can get them, and I don't think we can be too harsh to players, but I don't think we should be too harsh to the fans if we have opinions that might be unpopular. Sometimes we need to remember that we get excited, and sometimes all of us need to be talked off the ledge, so to speak.
I think, by and large, as a group, we're focusing on the right, positive things. But I don't blame anyone for being disappointed by some aspects of our performance. I am. All in all, it was pretty good, but there were some glaring areas for improvement. It just so happens that in many cases, some of those areas for improvement were player-related.

Good point. I want to see the younger WR's work a lot against WCU but I also want to see DJ and Knowles play a lot to hopefully get better..It's conflicting really.
