After last night, having Dadi serve as the Special Team's "Gunner" might be a really good idea. In fact, some more 1st-string players from both sides of the ball, may be what we need to fix those issues on Special Teams.

Can someone tell me what the gunner position is? I've seen it referred to several times, being played by players I recognize, but I'll admit that special teams plays often get a bit chaotic for me to follow so the positions get a bit jumbled in my head.

My thoughts on the game:

1. I loved the uniforms.

2. Watching Dadi Nicholas, I was reminded of a comment a while back, I think it was Mason, about Dadi Nicholas making a linemen whiff duriing one-on-one drills. He did it again. To Cyrus Kouandjio. He faked outside, went inside, and the Kouandjio maybe got a hand on him, but that's it. I think the left guard picked him up and McCarron ended up completing a first-down pass, but I as just blown away by his athleticism.

3. It's been mentioned hundreds of times now, but the defense can't get enough credit. That was an inspiring performance.

4. Re: the halftime competition, the MV's formations looked a little more crisp and I saw a few of Bama's band members out of step at one point. However, I think Bond music may have been a better music selection.

5. Despite the special teams and offensive woes, I left the game feeling very optimistic about this team. Most of what we did poorly should be easily corrected, and the things we did well, we did really, really well. I'm excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds.

Mostly, I was complimented on how well our defense played. To which I replied that they manhandled us in special teams and unfortunately they best us at our game.
But, right after the punt return there was a Bama student that just jumped a tech student. We didn't hear the Tech student say a thing. I was in section 338, middle of the Tech students.
I was also really disappointed. In the second half I was one of a handful still yelling when we were on defense.

This defense can be one of the best ever, as long as it plays tough every game like last night. I hope the 2nd string gets meaningful play time against WCU, because then we're in good shape.

I think this coaching staff is good enough to keep us from playing to the opponents level. I am excited to see Joel Caleb and seeing if the coaches will experiment with any younger WR's and maybe give Coles and Knowles a bench longer than usual so the younger guys get some experience.

I am looking forward to the game against WCU. I'm hoping the offense will find a rhythm and show us more of its identity. I also feel like it's a good opportunity for a defensive or special teams score, which will energize the fanbase once again.

Everybody better cheer extra hard for me. It's the first home opener I will miss since starting at VT in 2003. I'll miss it badly but will be watching on ESPN3!

I think by the end of September a lot more people will be acknowledging this defense.

I can't wait to see that new jumbotron looming over Lane. It's the happiest time of the year!

dude whats with all the bammers wearing the same button up red shirt? there were thousands of them.

True, Coach Beamer is at times resistant to change, and too loyal to non productive players and coaches. However, they aren't ready to think about a National Title not for a couple of years. Not totally disappointed with the game's outcome because I was realistic.

the pick 6 was bad but the ko return took the wind out of everybody's sails. that was the game.

It's really the way to go, provided the game is indoors or the weather is nice. It's an extra article of maroon and orange clothing I get to wear, and they're super comfortable. Win-win. And I don't see how they're any less appropriate than houndstooth golf pants, and I saw a lot of those.

No problems with any of the fans. At the Bud light tailgate a couple of Bama fans pumped the keg for me and I returned the favor, most were very cordial. Only complaint about the tailgate : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr216HObUIA&t=0m14s . My first time to Atlanta and first Hokie game vs. the SEC. Fun atmosphere and saw lots of promise from this football team

Agreed 100%. Very well said.

LT ran a three step timing route to our best receiver. Who stopped running on the play. MD7 style. But if you say he never should have thrown it, then that is debatable. However, film shows DJ stopped running a timing route. Fact. Remember Stanford's only catch? In traffic and Joshua got nailed AND held on. Sometimes you gotta fit it in a small window.

LT tried to make a play, while DJ gave up on it.

And for the record, I feel the momentum loss was greater due to the KO return, not the INT. After all, before the KO return, we had just scored and the faithful were back in it.

I wear basketball shorts and tall socks and to every single game have for the last 6 years

What about increasing Dadi's time on the other side to spell James Gayle? Gayle had zero tackles last night. Did Ken Ekanem get any playing time?

+1 for a great retort. I love the mixture of class and attitude. Welcome to TKP!
