Yup, and I believe had Malleck been healthy, we'd have a reliable receiving threat to use against them.
I have a feeling you didn't see more of the young guys because they needed DJ and knowles to block for the run. Bama's defense was huge and our young receivers need to gain some weight before they start playing full time. Look for them a lot against WCU since we can afford that.
Ha! Well done! Big turkey leg to you! Even with the keys on third down! That the way we do, way to represent!
I think what he meant was the entire country KNEW that the Hokies had no chance of winning that game last night
Well, to reinforce my point, that is completely different from being a laughingstock.
The Hokies reaction after the loss was unacceptable too.
Agree to disagree. There were a lot of positives to come out of that game and a lot of them were surprising because of 1) how bad Tech was last year and 2) how little we saw of the team this offseason. Is anyone HAPPY that we lost? No. But considering that Alabama only ran away with the game because of special teams flukes, I'm pretty happy with Tech's potential moving forward.
It was less of "losing is ok cause it's Alabama" and more of "we played our butts off and made a few big mistakes in an otherwise very close game against a very good opponent." There's not much to be gained from our guys obsessing over this one.
My quick comments and observations:
1. We had very few negative plays and penalties. Many of our plays were stopped for no gain, but we were not going backwards.
2. Our offensive line played incredible, considering they were matched against a physically superior defense. I was suprised with how well our power game between the tackles worked, and think we should have tried to pound the rock more often.
3. Our early misdirection / option stuff worked, except Alabama had superior athletes on the edge to recover and defeat our WR blocks.
4. Wide receivers really struggled. DJ Coles was very hesitant all game - not necessarily suprising since it was his first game since 2011. Logan's pick 6 was because DJ gave up on the route - end of story.
5. Demetri needs to catch the ball better or he shouldn't play.
6. Our defense was pretty dominant and I think will destroy the ACC.
7. Watching both Fullers at the same time is a thing of beauty. Really glad Kendall kept the tradition alive - it's a cool thing to watch, and I'm sure their parents are proud watching them ball out together.
Oregon scored 63 points against an FCS team today. That number might not change much in a week.
My point is, top tier football teams should not be OK with any loss. I agree that there were many positives to take from the game, but as long as there is an air of "losing is ok because it was Alabama", then guess what, you will never ever be a program on that level
Some of our best years we started out 0-1 with a loss to a good or even great team. And last year (7-6)? We started out 1-0. So, while I don't think anyone that has ever donned orange and maroon is happy with losing, it also probably isn't the end of the world.
We probably won't know too much more about the team next week (should be a blowout, and if it isn't... yikes). But if we are 3-1 going into the GT game with convincing wins over ECU and Marshall (two teams that will likely be better at the end of the season than many people think), then I think we could still be in position for a special year. Let's see what happens...
That team played their balls off last night. The D was flying around, the O-line was holding a dominant front-7 in check... You can't possibly be complaining about the team's want-to or effort. I'm really not sure where you're getting this at all.
I would love for Charley Meyer to get the start. The kid caught many balls while getting laid out, hung onto them, and he reminds me so much of Danny Coale. Joel Caleb, since he's now not suspended, could move there to help out. I am not sure why Stanford wasn't targeted enough, but he caught a tough ball and held onto it for first down.
I mean, Knowles and Coles need to get used to being featured, otherwise all defensive coordinators are going to ignore the passing threats and just blitz the house at the offense.
What do you want them to say/do? This game didn't really matter that much for us. It has zero bearing on the ACC title chase. We played very hard and for the most part pretty darn well. We saw lots of correctable mistakes and this team has a lot to be proud of. Time to move on and not let Bama beat us twice. Unless you want the players dwelling on this for another 3 weeks....
Considering last year, the opponent, injuries, new system, etc, I'd say this shouldn't come as a shock or even that much of a disappointment. The program is going in the right direction and we should see lots of improvement from here.
I think what he meant was the entire country KNEW that the Hokies had no chance of winning that game last night, and we proved them right. The Hokies reaction after the loss was unacceptable too. No one seemed to care about getting beat by Bama. That to me is more disturbing than our receivers play.
What's wrong with that comparison? At least on the field, Ben is a very respected tall physical quarterback, the comparison is obvious.
Updating myself: called both campus emporium and tech bookstore.
Not looking good. But, I like how someone told me that the jerseys usually aren't for sale like that. Considering I own jerseys that never even saw the field (all black MV7)
Ho hum.
Ease up, dude. Nobody expected to compete for a title this year, and if you did, you were drinking far too much kool-aid. And for what it's worth, last year we were undefeated until we played Pitt (in week 3), and the year before that we were undefeated until Clemson came to town in week 5. Were either of those years less heartbreaking? No.
So pump the brakes and get some perspective - if you want a decent OOC schedule, they're going to make you play it early. If you're happy playing FCS teams, then you're crazy.
I'd say Stanford and Meyer, if he's healthy.
LT was getting on his receivers about lots of stuff all night, and justifiably so. After that failed 3rd down pass, Thomas was all over Coles.
I was saying the same thing. Games like that help you get drafted.
I would not be surprised if Moorehead bench Knowles and Coles for the West Carolina game to send a message.
I would. Who else is he going to start? Zero depth at that position right now, and I do mean zero. Parker is a great athlete and he did a good job at running past his defender last night... then as soon as the ball was thrown he fell on his face. Literally. It'd be funnier if it wasn't so sad.
With all due respect, I disagree with you. Alabama broke in 3 new offensive linemen and Bud Foster's defense is at its best when it's doing all sort of slants, stunts, and blitz. Furthermore, Virginia Tech held Alabama to 96 rushing yards (2.5 rushing yards average) per ESPN stat, and that's the first time a team did that to Alabama since 2011.
Virginia Tech averaged 4.6 yards per rush thank to Edmunds' touchdown run and brilliant blocking by the offensive line, who cannot get enough praise, IMO.
Finally, I am not at all impressed with aTm. I was watching their game yesterday and came away shaking my head. Rice's offense was giving the Aggies' defense fits all afternoon, and if that is coming from Rice, how in the world is aTm going to stop Yeldon? And I seem to recall that Manziel got sacked 3 or 4 times by Rice's defense.
I am not buying that aTm is all that elite.
Forget that, Bruce Smith still looks like he could throw on some pads and get out there.
Kidding of course, Buds D played like men last night. I think this is a great idea. Put him on staff so he doesn't violate the gutless NCAA rules on boosters, and let him walk into the living room of kids that dream of being great D linemen.
Virginia Tech is not a laughingstock football program, and hasn't been for decades.

ACC is guaranteed at least one more victory for opening weekend...
Also, Yahoo is already claiming Clemson as a title contender now.
