Hah! I won't disagree, but here's a turkey leg anyways for stroking my ego. I actually love coaching and hope to someday coach a JV squad part-time or something. But yes, being in college does have its perks. Going to great stadiums on a fairly regular basis is definitely one of them.
Yes indeed, Kyle very well may have made himself some money tonight.
Wow, you are ridiculously observant. The coaching staff can use you when you graduate. You got to go to the game, that's cool, I'm lucky if I make one game a year in Blacksburg or maybe when they play in Charlottesville. Burdens of a working man.
Why thank you, although admittedly that was from the nosebleeds (but let's face it, no bad seat in the Georgia Dome). As far as Stanford and Dadi are concerned: Josh caught the darn ball. That's enough for me. And Dadi made one of Bama's best OL (unless they subbed out Kuiandjo or however you spell it) look like he was standing still. As well as Collins played, I wouldn't say no to seeing more of Dadi. I'm interested to see French's film review of this one for sure.
If you're a recruit, would you have really wanted to play for O'CainSpring instead of Morris or really any other OC in the ACC/SEC/Big10?
The play calling was magnificent. Those deep balls HAVE to be called to keep the safeties honest, the VT receivers consistently got behind the coverage. LT overthrew one by about 2 feet and Knowles couldn't hang on to anything. I walked away from the Georgia Dome very happy with Scot Loeffler.
In the moment, I was upset with it, but I can kinda see where Loeffler was going with it. Nothing wrong with the defense having to respect the threat of a pass on 3rd and short. Also, it appeared that the WR on the right did something wrong. He motioned left and almost picked off the snap and then took himself completely out of the play. If that is executed better, I don't think any of us are bellyaching about how bad of a call that was.
Interesting evaluations. I'll keep your thoughts in mind as I watch upcoming games. Hopefully your take is more accurate and they can build on their performance throughout the season. What's your opinion on starting Josh Stanford ahead of Demitri Knowles, and more playing time for Dadi Nicholas?
I don't see that. Loeffler himself said this would be a pro-style team with the ability to be multiple and based on running the football. That's exactly what I saw, especially after the first few series. Look at the play call when we were backed up on our own 5. Outside zone run that we saw all spring and fall. I think the game plan was well thought-out and well executed until the ball got to the WRs.
I disagree entirely on LT3. He looked really, really good today, with the exception of maybe 4 throws. Not bad against a top notch defense. Also, Edmund's looked legit. He hit the hole at full speed every time. It was rare to see him taken down in the backfield or pushed backwards after contact.
However, one thing I saw that made me extremely happy was this: when VT was backed up around our own 5 and NEEDED to push the ball forward, what did we see? An outside zone that we'd run all spring and fall. That's our bread and butter, we-need-a-few-yards-now play and it was awesome to see it executed to perfection.
*Edit* Also, the offense looked far from the same. That is a much different, much improved unit from the one that took the field against Rutgers in December. Lots of room to improve if course, especially at WR, but still a pretty darn good showing up front against a quality opponent.
I believe Loeffler wanted to run a lot of shotgun against Bama because of how they line up against shotgun formations.
Our receivers make easy catches and LT pulls the string about 2 feet on a deep throw, and I think we have a much different game on our hands. Just sayin. Lots of correctable mistakes.
I agree, which makes me wonder why not play him more now? He's very productive/disruptive. Didn't notice the kickers much. If you mean Mithchell Ludwig he's just a true Freshman so I'll give him a pass against the Bamas. Seems like VT falls in love with kickers from Southwest VA fairly often, but I think they need a Special Teams Coordinator like many teams are trending toward to ensure impartiality and devote more time to the specialties.
Ok that is where the TE was.
I was honestly wondering that too. I will have to check a replay but did we run sets with TEs? I was so busy watching Bama's linebackers and d-line I only began to wonder when the freshman fullback got his carry.
Dadi is gonna be a beast, Dmitri should not return kicks as you noted above and I thought this new kicker was supposed to be putting everything out of the end zone in camp thus no big returns??
Yeah I feel good about the O-line also. Demitiri Knowles just scares me at receiver. He looks like a deer caught in the headlights still. I think Josh Stanford should start ahead of him, he's more aggressive. Trey Edmonds was good but just didn't look natural at running back. Maybe it was his slightly oversized shoulder pads.
Good point. If not for the special teams malfunctions, the score would have only been 14-10 Bama, but don't you want more from the offense? I really think Josh Stanford should start on offense, and Dadi Nicholas on defense. They are both more productive than the players ahead of them. By the way who got burned for the 3rd Quarter touchdown pass to Christion Jones?
I saw promise and some of the best O-line play in recent years. Defense=EPIC!
What did I see? I saw a team that the consensus best team in the nation couldn't shutout.
KJ has had that nagging hamstring injury, so i'm pretty sure that's why they were trying out some different options. Of course when they finally put him back there, he picks up 30 or so yards.
I think the late injury to Malleck had an effect on the game plan. As we all know, the TE plays a big role in Loeffler's offense. Who knows if he would have caught any passes tonight, but I think the game plan would have included more calls to him. I expect we'll see a bit of improvement on O in the next few weeks.
I have no doubt that Loeffler will build upon this game. He strikes me as a premiere scholar of the game. Someone from this receiver corps will step up, that I have no doubt.
I agree......I love seeming the return to nasty by the defense. Love it. Our defense played well enough and then some.
Our offense?.......not so much, but except for a calls.....(Logan is NOT an option QB!), I was happy with what I saw. I definitely think it was a step in the right direction.
Special teams sucked on the returns.....we ALWAYS have a gaffe or two in these big game losses, so when bama ran back the first, I knew we had shot ourselves. But, this will get better quickly.....we just don't have the depth of good players, and well hey, its Alabama.
But if we make a modicum of improvement......I like our chances going forward.
I expect our O-line to run a clinic next week.
I hate those easy points we allowed because we weren't THAT bad, but Alabama was better......(but not by a whole lot! And I think Saban knew it)
Go Hokies!

Which DB got burned for the 3rd Quarter touchdown pass?
