I think voting down something percieved as racist or inappropriate falls well within the guidelines, but that's just me.

The joke wasn't particularly tasteful (at all, really), but it was a joke. I see hundreds of worse jokes on the internet almost daily.

And I think people are starting to misuse the "-1" button, when Joe implemented it he did say that it wasn't to be used just because you disagreed with someone. To quote the "Site Updates" forum post:

"... if someone flames or wages a personal attack, then down vote. Do not down vote for disagreeing with someone's opinion. In general, vote up way more often than you vote down. Of the almost 20,000 comments on the site, I've read them all, there might be 10 I'd personally down vote, and those weren't from regular, active users."

Sorry for getting off-topic...

I believe that it is illegal to host them on campus.

If you don't recruit through them you get accused of "making allegations" and promoting "investigations".

It's not illegal for VT staff to have relationships with those seven on seven coaches. That, more then anything, is probably what caused this divide.

The Thoroughbred coaches had invested a lot of time in these kids, and had an interest in seeing that things worked out for them. If the VT staff then cuts them completely out of the process, it's not surprising they would be offended by it. Especially if the UVA staff is more welcoming.

First, I'm as bummed as anybody that we won't be hosting a Thursday game, but...

1. As others have said, Thursdays really aren't great for recruiting. Yes the atmosphere is amazing, but remember these high school kids have to be in class at 8 the next morning.

2. Re: Bowl games. Our ticket sales in recent years have been rather underwhelming, so maybe with 1.5-2 extra vacation days people will be more inclined to go to a bowl game. I know I will want to have 2 extra days in Pasadena in January.

Most of these comments seem like they are coming from an $EC blog. They trash recruits because they pick a different school or they are bashing the other school or making some other excuse.

I think VT fans are better than that.

This is great! I was a big swimmer growing up and have always followed the Virginia Tech Swimming & Diving Team for years. This team is outstanding and I will be following the events this weekend closely. I always enjoy seeing any Olympic Sports coverage on The Key Play. Great write-up, keep them coming!

IT is better to not worry about the 7 on 7 crowd! NCAA is trying to keep football away from that type of thing!

So basically when you recruit through those 7 on 7 coaches you're putting yourself at risk of getting accused of violations because those coaches may or may not have connections to agents. Am I getting this right?

I don't think it's technically a violation (currently), but it's a slippery slope. The fear is that these 7-on-7 tournaments are going to become like the AAU for college basketball.

I'm pretty sure that recruiting through the 7-on-7 coaches is a NCAA violation and thats why we don't do it. Because of this, the 7-on-7 coaches became bitter at Tech and influence their kids away from us.

but it seems chip west is doing something right to be on the inside track, and to land these recruits. he must be kissing the right tail downthere in the 757. looks like his other 2 targets in that area are Derrick Nnadi and Jamil Kamara; 2 really good athletes.

I swam a lot in high school and having been to many championship meets, the excitement that's generated during finals heats is electric, especially as the races are fairly short as said in the post. Races can come down to a hundredth of a second, making the timing of every flip turn, relay swimmer exchange, and finish reach ever so crucial. I'll definitely check out the live feed and hope to witness our swimmers begin the downfall of UVA's streak!

I get it. I really do. But as an alum that lives 6+ hours from Blacksburg, my wife and I plan ahead to take certain days off for the sake of football games. Last year's Labor Day night game? Yep, took that following Tuesday off. Did the same thing a few years ago vs. Boise State. His argument is as though taking one day off (something we have 6-9 months to prepare for, and potentially longer if the ACC WOULD GET ITS ACT TOGETHER LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD) is a huge inconvenience.

I get it. People have kids and they need to save vacation for times that correspond with their childrens' vacation. But we don't hear an argument from him regarding Bowl Games that aren't always convenient and tend to require multiple days off of work...

In a year in which in-state recruiting is paramount, it is upsetting that we won't have a Thursday night game to showcase the atmosphere that we are all so proud of.
