It's one of the toughest calls for the referee in any case let alone this one. The key is whether or not the defender is in a set position when the offensive player leaves the ground. If he isn't then he's essentially undercutting the guy and its a block. Also any movement after being set (I.e. raising your arms to initiate contact) negates being set because the defender starts the contact which means its a block. Your feet don't have to be set to take a charge, but it's who initiates contact.
As some guys below said this call could've gone either way but you have to call something. You can't just let it go. Personally I think the UVA defender initiated the contact but its very close
Just look at the Big East days before Greenberg.
I know everyone was just overjoyed that we got rid of him... but I remember what it was like rooting for a team that couldn't even make the Big East tournament (back then there were 14 teams, and only 12 teams participated in the conference tournament). We were in the Big East 4 years, 3 under Stokes and one under Greenberg. The only time we finished outside of the basement was when Greenberg led us to a 7-9 conference record in his first year, before we jumped to the ACC the following season and went 8-8.
I know that we kind of plateaued under him, but at least his teams consistently played great defense, and as a result were rarely blown out. He took us out of the cellar of the Big East and made us somewhat relevant in the ACC.
Not really sure to be honest. You're probably right.
Seven bodies guys, and other than Green, not a single one has enough talent to be a legitimate ACC starter. Guys, until you get 2 more recruiting classes in the door, can't really measure this other than cast metaphorical stones at Greenberg.
start #BEAMERDANCE?
I don't buy that as a valid excuse. We had 7 days off between GT and WF, then another 5 until last night's game. Three games in 12 days isn't that many. Not to mention we played 10 players last night.
Paulus'd him.
...are dark days in Blacksburg. (for hoops)
I think they are getting tired. Not enough people helping rotate out.
Agreed. And seeing them just run screens along the baseline all game and still get wide open 3's is frustrating. I would love for our lineup for the next game be Green-Rankin-Eddie-Wood-Raines. I think that's our best defensive lineup.
01 Robert Brown g 7-15 0-1 4-7 2 4 6 3 18 0 1 1 1 31
This is Brown's stats from the OK State game. 18 points on 7 for 15 shots, 6 rebounds, 1 turnover, 1 block, 1 steal in 31 minutes. If he does this every night, we win most games. What is the difference? Of course, Eddie also had 12 rebounds, 15 points, 4 assists, only 2 turnovers, 2 steals in 34 minutes in that game which we won by 10 points against a pretty good OK State team.
You can't ignore the fact that our defense is absolutely atrocious, though. In the kind of offense Tech likes to run, which is run like hell, the defense has to create the offense. Our defense is not doing that right now, and we're being forced to play other team's games, like last night against UVA. Even if Erick is the only player producing on offense, we may be able to get more production out of other players, like Eddie and Rankin (I've given up hope on Robert Brown). Look at our 7-0 start, especially the Iowa and Oklahoma State game. We played fantastic defense is those games, which set up transition buckets for our offense. It all starts on the defensive end.
We tend to let our "worst" players transfer and then they shine at the school they go to (See Garland, Tyrone and Thorns, Hank)
That is the kind of situation you either call a blocking foul or you swallow the whistle, as pbowman69 said. You can't take away a dunk like that.
Yes.
How about just swallowing the whistle for once? No reason to call anything there.
It was indeed a charge. However, you almost always see that kind of play called a block, especially when the dunker is at home. It's just too huge of a play for most refs to make such a controversial call. But, in this case, it was the right call.
It is very close. It looks like he might not have set himself until JVZ took off, but either way we lost because they couldn't miss from 3. Hopefully JJ can figure something out.
And is Robert Brown the worst player we've ever given a scholarship to?
I remember for one of the games I thought about going to (maybe ACCCG in Charlotte?) that there was no price difference, it was just that students had first-come, first serve on some allotment and sat in a section together, whereas other tickets were given out by Hokie Club priority. And once a student bought a ticket, anyone could use it, the only distinction was ensuring that students had access to tickets if they wanted them.
Big call that went against us. It's a shame that an excellent pass and great hustle from JVZ turned into a momentum changer. I have watched the video countless times and call could have gone either way. Defender puts his hands out on JVZ anticipating the charge which could have been called a foul and a huge lift for Hokies and still not sure if defender got there and was set before JVZ slammed him. I think this foul is called on the defender in most situations in order to protect the player in the air. Any refs out there to give an opinion after watching the video?
I'm not so sure that I want the drunken idiots that kick cars, UVA can have them.
But the rest of them (which is to say, pretty much all of them), yeah, it would be nice
instead of seeing it live from the opposite end of the court, I must say I agree...
I still think it was a good call on the charge. :-(
you're damn right it's AWESOME ... hopefully we see cfb doing that on the evening of august 31, 2013 #BEATBAMA

and realized just how bad of a recruiter Greenberg was. I think it's been clear for a while but now that he's gone, I can be honest with myself.
I'm not huge into college hoops like I am football so please correct me if I'm wrong but in my years of following our bball team, we've never had a legitimate big man. Seems to me we've always filled our center spot with the tallest forward we had, instead of recruiting actual 5's and 4's. I just don't get how you can consistently have a bball team with no true big man.
Hopefully JJ will turn things around. I think he can - seems to be much more a players coach than Seth was and I don't think that hurts with recruiting.
