Friedgen was not the Offensive Coordinator at Maryland during that period. He was head coach. As others have mentioned, he had nowhere near the talent that VT had during that period. It's worth noting that Maryland was 120th out of 120 in total offense this year under Edsall. Also, I'm pretty sure you're actually looking at points/game, not yards/game. We were ranked around 100 in yards/game in 07 and 08, and Maryland was significantly ahead of us. Until recently our scoring was always helped by defense and special teams. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/stats/byteam?cat1=offense&cat2=Tot...
When Fridge was an OC, his teams were consistently competitive. He won the ACC. He won the Broyles award (as did Bud Foster) and he went to the NFL where he helped the Chargers win the AFC. Could you imagine Bryan Stinespring coordinating an AFC champion offense???
He was also an outstanding QB coach. He developed Boomer Esiason and Frank Reich.
his talent was a fraction of what it was/is/will be at Tech. He can call plays, which he did on a limited basis for the Twerps. Put Fatboy Fridge in the box and turn him loose.
As a straight up OC, he's won a shared NC at GT, led a team to the Super Bowl in his first year.
From his wiki page...
Friedgen followed Ross to Georgia Tech, a period lasting four years. In 1990, Georgia Tech went from being unranked in the preseason to achieving an 11-0-1 record and a share of the national championship with Colorado. In 1992, Friedgen followed Ross once again, this time to the NFL's San Diego Chargers, where he orchestrated an offense that led the franchise to an appearance in Super Bowl XXIX.[5] In 1997, Friedgen returned to Georgia Tech, where, as offensive coordinator, he developed the balanced offensive attack (200 yards on the ground, 200 yards through the air) that would become his trademark. During his second year, the Yellow Jackets were co-champions of the ACC, defeated Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl, and ended the season ranked among the nation's top 10 teams. In 1999, he was the winner and awarded the Frank Broyles Award, given to the nation's top assistant coach.
BURN EVERYTHING
Can someone please tell me why anyone is supportive of Ralph Friedgen being the next offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech?
All I have heard on the subject is that he is a "good offensive miind". What does that even mean? Statistically, his offenses were terrible.
NCAA Offensive Ranks, Yds / Game:
2004 (VT, 32 / MD, 109)
2005 (VT, 32 / MD, 66)
2006 (VT, 88 / MD, 76)
2007 (VT, 75 / MD, 83)
2008 (VT, 79 / MD, 60)
2009 (VT, 43 / MD, 107)
2010 (VT, 27 / MD, 75)
Honestly, it's hard to be worse on offense than Virginia Tech. From '04 through '10, the Hokies were ranked on average 54th. Maryland, in the same timeframe, was 73rd. Am I missing something?
I've also heard that he does not like to recruit. WTF world.
5. Immediately following the bowl game, Frank Beamer announces his retirement, and Weaver announces his replacement immediately afterward, whether it is Bud Foster (Probable), Stiney (Possible), or someone outside the program (less likely, given that there hasn't been any information leaked yet)
like Ricky Bustle, Dana Bible, Ralph Friedgen or Jim Bollman. I would not expect any wild cards, like a 35-year old offensive coordinator from Old Dominion.
I think he is simply saying they want to sign one more WR as part of the class. Two graduated last year and three graduated this year. One more will graduate next year. You want to keep the numbers rolling. I wouldn't read too much into the "really good" portion of the comment. Ideally they want ever player they recruit to be really good at their position.
I think it's supposed to be 4 boards not 40 boards. 40 is outrageous!!
Green is averaging 24.9 points, 4.4 assists and 40 boards.
Averaging 40 boards is impressive. Well done sir.
All this statement did was get the media off the Universities' backs. Like is said above, if MD get's that $50 mil bill decreased it will likely be a free-for-all to leave. But for now they admins don't want to deal with all the questions and rumors.
I think we all just need to let this go until the whole MD issue is settled and then we can worry about it again. I think it has been made plenty obvious that the people who actually have a say in this stuff don't want to make a move right now.
Of course, we all know this can change in a split second but I would at least wait for an AD or higher up to say something before we worry about anything.
I think we've all learned that reporters, bloggers, and others are just way to trigger happy right now and think anytime someone mentions conference realignment that shits about to go down. It's not, at least not yet.
So how about we worry right now about VT and the ACC, we have a basketball program that is doing great things and a bowl game to worry about in a few weeks.
haha, I do what I can
I'm just simply saying that I think Erick can produce no matter what kind of defense he's looking at. He's not bad at dishing the rock either, so I think we'll be able to beat their zone just fine (if that's what we see a lot of).
Can be beaten, but it takes five of them to pull it off. I'm not sure which you are referring to.
Also, Robert Brown should be able to slice and dice his way into the lane still against the zone...
And Deathrow, I saw you defending VTMBB on the ESPN forums. Good man.
Is there any defense Erick Green can't beat?
He graduated two years ahead of me. Glad to see him contributing and generally being a badass.
...he is tailoring the system around the talent currently on the roster. That was one mistake Greenberg made in recruiting players for HIS system, which was a defensive basketball instead of an up-tempo attacking basketball. Greenberg liked to play physical defense and grind-them-out on offense, which would work if he had the right type of players.
If Malcom Delaney had played under JJ instead of Greenberg, I think Delaney would have set several records by the time he left Blacksburg.
One of JJ weakness' unfortunately, is attacking the full court press, and I expect to see more teams utilizing it.
WVa is going to throw everything, including the kitchen sink, at Tech. If they can beat the 1-3-1 zone, then I think they can handle just about anything.
Recruits watching us mass points, with good ball distribution--everyone joining in on the fun--is really going to help us land kids I think.
Another reason: he understands the importance of a good offense
LET'S GO... TO THE SEC!
If UMD wins their case, expect the ramifications to be huge.
...just to distract Harris enough to have him go to not-UVA. But, if we can get him, more the merrier.
I think Sherman's comments are just the thinly veiled allusion to Hamilton. He can't say, "We really want Desean Hamilton!" but he can say, "We really need an impact receiver!"
Another derp by mikelondon
don't read too much into sherman's comments .. it's a numbers thing .. you want to get X number of receivers every go round ... it's not secret that hamilton is at the top of that list. we struck out on the other names (they were very doubtful anyhow).
as far as harris goes ... it'll be tough. i doubt we get him (and we don't really need another db in this cycle though we'd probably take him).

If Stiney is appointed HC I am going to send them a letter demanding my tuition back.
