He also knits to get out his frustrations... very therapeutic.
He's been a huge disappointment for me this season.
I guess to extend the idea you could give to the Red Cross or St. Jude's or whatever you choose. I like the idea of supporting the university, especially since I feel I benefited so much from my time there, but there are lots of worthy causes.
I think the key though is to remember that by doing this you're taking a step to help both the university/charity you choose AND the athletic department in the long run, since your action is likely to improve the coaching staff.
And I think I'll go for a red zone at Owens.
Hey everyone. A couple of quick notes:
1) I know this post was very negative and puts the spotlight squarely on Logan Thomas. Please don't read into this as an endorsement of Thomas being benched or not ultimately returning to being the superstar we saw towards the end of last season. He also had one more additional excellent throw on a sharp quick out route to Davis prior to the touchdown throw.
I think the footwork for the new offense really screwed him up. Last season, the offensive was perfectly designed for him to be successful. He had a good pass blocking offensive line that gave him time in the pocket, dependable wide receivers, and a big threat at running back that forced defenses to respect outside running. If Stinespring and O'Cain had just built on that formula and added the appropritate plays (tight end veer release, speed option, lead read option), and then learned to call plays in a sensible rhythm, things could look much more promising right now. Plus, not having a viable workhorse back to move the chains when Logan is struggling, has killed any chance to let him have a bad game against a decent team and still win. Folks have implied on twitter and here that perhaps Edmunds wanted to be redshirted and that is why he hasn't played. Coleman has a ton of promise, but the reality is, on way too many 3rd and 3's, he has not gotten an inch after contact after 2 1/2 yards. Scales showed how valuable a power back is when he got the first down in OT on Saturday. And, Edmunds is a FAR superior player to Scales. There is no excuse for him to not be in the lineup, and it has cost the Hokies at least three wins this season.
2) I touched on some of the positives and negatives from this game. For example, I thought the offensive line had some success getting push on interior running plays. Yes, Wang got stonewalled a couple of times (I am beating a dead horse at this point) and Benedict and Farris both had some "YIKES" moments, but they did open several nice holes throughout the day. Note, Logan was not used on the read option until overtime. Those were the backs getting tough yards inside.
I am writing a follow up post now. Hopefully it puts a better taste in our mouths.
I think for any of those who have stopped giving to the Hokie Club out of bitterness of the football program (im sure there are some out there) should give what they would have given to the Hokie Club, to the university instead. Just haulting funding to the athletic program out of bitterness just makes you look like a dick (IMO) who just wants football seats and parking passes. Instead you can take that money and still put it to something we all love. Like the posters said above, giving to the university is a GREAT thing.
On a side note, the words Hokie Club is making me hungry for that sandwitch in West End....(insert Homer Simpson drooling)
I could be wrong, but I can't imagine him going in the first 3 rounds of the NFL draft. I guess if he tears up the combine some team could take him due to his physical tools, but we've seen that VT's 40 times are often exaggerated.
DC/NOVA/Richmond market has always been a big question mark to me. How powerful is it, really?
We've managed to swindle our way into 1/2 nationally televised games, but the vast majority of our schedule can barely be found on tv in the DC market.
I just don't see what value we bring the the SEC, at all. Strong alumni base who travels to games? Basketball?
Can someone fill in the pieces here?
So we can all remember this season, and be humbled. #humblepie #thanksgiving
...for months
I disagree. I believe the attention/success of the athletic programs help the school monetarily. This is a down year, but I severely doubt the coaches are any more okay with it than we are. I can't imagine the amount of things Bud has broken/drank? this year. Not sure how he lets his anger out...
At the same time, giving to the university is a great thing!
Too many ties here in Blacksburg... And the HC job up for grabs in the VERY near future.
I'd be interested in seeing who he would put on his staff (if he were to be promoted to Head Ball Coach)
I'd like to hear more...
Great post per usual
The most crap I ever receive is from the asshat working the register at the ABC store on Main Street. ie: "We charge Hokies double around here."
as he is our best recruiter, I hope he sticks around a little longer.
I hate to be the one to turn a football thread into a conference expansion thread, but this takes a little bit of the cloud away from over Miami's head and makes them a less risky option for the SEC or Big 12. I wonder if that factored into their thought process at all.
I think the Big 10 is playing chess while the rest of us are playing checkers. They get access to a couple huge TV markets- I'm sure they've already had talks with cable providers and know that this will be a profitable move for the Big 10 network. They also destabilize the ACC, potentially forcing Notre Dame's hand. I expect their 15th team will be Boston College, and Notre Dame will have no choice but to ditch their ACC partnership and join the Big 10 or lose too many traditional rivalry games and lose access to a new postseason that's controlled by the superconferences.
VT needs to look a couple steps ahead here and make sure they get out before the ACC totally crumbles. The Big 10 is attacking us to get Notre Dame. The Big 12 is obviously going to 12 and it's well known that there is mutual interest with Florida State. 14 is an awkward number for scheduling and if the SEC can snag a couple more brand name programs they will. If we wait until we have no other options, even if there is a spot left for us in the SEC, Big 10 or Big 12, if we're forced to leave a conference that's in shambles we may have to accept some kind of reduced membership because of our limited negotiating leverage. We are in a bank run situation here and if we are the last ones to the counter we're going to lose everything.
Weaver has cost us $50 million of exit fees and two or three years of SEC revenue because of his stubborn personal attachment to the ACC. The athletic department operates marginally in the black, so he's probably destroyed more value in the last couple years than he created in his entire tenure as AD.
Blacksburg has gone from a place where hard work makes you successful to a shit eating old boys club.
A lot of his interceptions have come on balls he has tried to throw with touch. I'd rather him make a crisp, tight, hard throw on the intermediate routes (like he was last year especially on the slant route/skinny post) than try to give the receiver an easy ball to catch if they don't catch it or you break their finger so be it.
I'm fucking incensed after reading that Lazenby comment. There will be no change to the Blacksburg-based monopoly on idiocy known as "O'Cainspring" in 2013. This comment proves it. Furthermore, using Logan as the scapegoat is appalling. I'm furious.
Thanksgiving is ruined.
Great write-up as always, French.
thats it.
"He doesn't want to get hurt so he's making quick reads, bad throws"
Hes not making quick reads as much as hes staring down receivers to the point where everyone in the stadium knows who hes looking for. You want to play on Sundays? Go through your progression expeditiously and make the correct read...it's not as though if you stare at him hard/long enough, he's miraculously going to become open.
And great points in your last paragraph; there has been an attitude problem at times this season among the players, and that culture begins and ends with the coaching staff.
I'm so jacked up on hate that I can't even type correctly

I believe that significant changes will indeed be made to the offensive coaching staff in the off-season.
